Pediatric effects of forever chemicals may last for a long time.

Perfluorinated alkylate substances (PFASs) have been in use for about 75 years. Because of their persistence, concentrations in the environment have increased, and absorbed PFAS will remain in the human body, some compounds for many years. The fetus and the newborn infant are particularly vulnerable to PFAS toxicity due to the intense development of organs and body functions. In addition, PFASs pass the placenta so that a pregnant woman shares her accumulated PFAS burden with the progeny. In addition, PFASs are excreted in the milk, so that the resulting serum-PFAS concentration in the infant

A Case of Severe Preeclampsia in the Last Trimester of Pregnancy Complicated by Acute Kidney Injury: A Case Report.

Pregnancy-related acute kidney injury (AKI) secondary to severe preeclampsia is a rare but life-threatening obstetric complication for both the mother and the fetus-newborn. A 19-year-old primigravida at 36 weeks of gestation was admitted to the hospital with malaise and severe hypertension. Due to severe preeclampsia, delivery was completed by cesarean section. The diagnosis of AKI led to the initiation of hemodialysis, which was continued until full recovery of renal function. This case highlights the rare occurrence of AKI associated with severe preeclampsia during pregnancy and discusses t

Prenatal CFTR modulator therapy for fetal cystic fibrosis: Emerging evidence, clinical considerations, and future directions.

BACKGROUND: The consequences of cystic fibrosis (CF) transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein dysfunction or absence begin during fetal development, with pancreatic, intestinal, hepatobiliary, and reproductive manifestations evident at birth. The advent of CFTR modulator therapies (CFTR modulator)-most notably elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI), approved for children and adults with CF who carry responsive variants, and the recently approved vanzacaftor/tezacaftor/deutivacaftor (VTD), currently indicated for older pediatric and adult populations-has transformed long-term health o

Perception of visual noise patterns depends on correlations produced in V1: A simulation study.

IMPORTANCE: The cord blood proteome, a repository of proteins derived from both mother and fetus, might offer valuable insights into the physiological and pathological state of the fetus. However, its association with birth weight and growth trajectories early in life remains unexplored. OBJECTIVE: To identify cord blood proteins associated with birth weight and the birth weight ratio (BWR) and to evaluate the associations of these cord blood proteins with early growth trajectories. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study included 288 mother-child pairs from the ongoing prospect

Prenatal Diagnosis of a Feingold Syndrome Pregnancy Complicated with Severe Preeclampsia: A Report of a Challenging Case.

Feingold syndrome (FS) is a rare congenital disorder with an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern. Two distinct subtypes are recognized based on their molecular pathology: FS type 1 (FS1) and FS type 2 (FS2). Both types share skeletal anomalies such as microcephaly, brachymesophalangia, and clinodactyly; however, gastrointestinal atresia is unique to FS1. Herein, we report a rare prenatal diagnosis of FS1 in a female fetus. The second-trimester ultrasound revealed bilateral clinodactyly and fetal microcephaly, and the subsequent molecular karyotyping identified a ~342 kb deletion at 2p24.3 e

A rough start especially for boys: the influence of fetal sex on delivery mode.

In Austria, more than a third of all births are performed with the assistance of vacuum extraction or a caesarean section. Consistent with the male disadvantage hypothesis, many indications for obstetric intervention, including cephalopelvic disproportion or placental abruption, affect male fetuses more frequently than female ones. Thus, we hypothesized that male fetuses show a higher rate of obstetric intervention than female fetuses. This retrospective, single-center study was based on 11749 singleton live births taking place in Vienna, Austria between 2010 and 2020. Maternal (age, body heig

Advanced fetal cardiac monitoring in gestational diabetes mellitus: HbA1c remains the relevant predictor of perinatal outcome under optimal metabolic control.

PURPOSE: Perinatal complications can occur in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) despite adequate metabolic control and standard diagnostics. Metabolic alterations can cause structural and functional changes in the fetus, especially in the cardiovascular system, by affecting the autonomic nervous system and the cardiac conduction system. Advanced fetal cardiac monitoring may provide detailed insights into these processes and their impact on perinatal outcomes. METHODS: In this exploratory, prospective, single-center cohort study, 172 women with singleton pregnancies between 33 + 0 and 40 + 0

'Vanishing twin syndrome' following frozen embryo transfer has no detrimental effects on offspring growth and development up to 3 years.

CONTEXT: Vanishing twin syndrome (VTS) is a common condition in assisted reproductive procedures, where a multi-fetus pregnancy is spontaneously reduced to a singleton pregnancy. However, the effects of VTS on the development of the remaining fetus is relatively unknown. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to estimate the effect of VTS on the dynamic measurement of growth and development of the singletons (0-3 years) born from frozen embryo transfer (FET). METHODS: This study was a retrospective cohort design and was carried out from January 2017 to December 2023. To optimize statistical eff

Threshold and sex-specific associations of prenatal low-level lead exposure with neonatal birth outcomes: a Chinese prospective birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Even low-level prenatal lead exposure may adversely affect fetal development, yet its impact on neonatal birth outcomes and potential sex-specific effects remain unclear in general populations. We aimed to assess the associations between low-level prenatal lead exposure and neonatal anthropometric outcomes, and to investigate sex-specific susceptibility. METHODS: We utilized data from a prospective birth cohort established in Wujiang District, Jiangsu Province, China, including 2020 mother-infant pairs. Cord blood lead levels were measured at delivery by using graphite furnace ato

The burden of premature births attributed to heat across 13 countries.

BACKGROUND: Climate change threatens global health, particularly among vulnerable populations such as pregnant individuals and their newborns. Evidence linking heat to premature birth is largely based on single-location studies or heterogeneous meta-analyses, leaving important gaps regarding underrepresented regions, preterm subgroups, and the role of maternal and infant characteristics. OBJECTIVES: To quantify the association between heat and preterm birth (PTB) across multiple countries, assess gestational-age-specific effects, and identify maternal vulnerability factors. METHODS: We analy

Open fetal surgery for correction of myelomeningocele and umbilical cord presentation at hysterotomy: report of a rare complication.

Myelomeningocele is a severe neural tube defect that significantly affects neurological development. Studies have demonstrated that intrauterine repair leads to better neurological outcomes than postnatal correction, likely due to reduced exposure of the neural tissue to amniotic fluid. Despite its benefits, prenatal surgery is performed in only a limited number of centers worldwide and is associated with both maternal and fetal risks. This case report aims to describe a complication rarely reported in the literature: umbilical cord presentation at hysterotomy during open intrauterine fetal su
