Foetal disruptive brain injuries: Diagnosing the underlying pathogenetic mechanisms with cranial ultrasonography.

Antenatal destructive events affecting the central nervous system of the foetus lead to disruptive brain lesions that are often associated with impaired neurodevelopment. The pathogenesis of these lesions encompasses a range of causes, including haemorrhagic, embolic, or other vascular events; exposure to teratogens, such as drugs or substance abuse; congenital brain infections; genetic conditions; and metabolic disorders. Cranial ultrasonography is the first-line imaging modality to diagnose these antepartum brain lesions in the newborn infant; it is often complemented by brain magnetic reson

New Neonatal and Prenatal Approach to Home Therapy with Amoxicillin, Rifaximin, and Anti-Inflammatory Drugs for Pregnant Women with COVID-19 Infections-Monitoring of Fetal Growth as a Prognostic Factor: A Triple Case Series (N.A.T.H.A.N.).

Background: Since the COVID-19 pandemic, managing acute infections in symptomatic individuals, regardless of vaccination status, has been widely debated and extensively studied. Even more concerning, however, is the impact of COVID-19 on pregnant women-especially its effects on fetuses and newborns. Several studies have documented complications in both expectant mothers and their infants following infection. Methods: In our previous works, we provided scientific evidence of the bacteriophage behavior of SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2). This demonstrated that a well

Assessment of the Values of Endoglin and Soluble Fms-Like Tyrosine Kinase-1/Placental Growth Factor Ratio Among Women at Risk for Pre-eclampsia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE) is a common complication of pregnancy affecting pregnant women and newborns. PE causes multi-organ disorders and remains one of the main reasons for maternal morbidity and mortality. In addition, PE leads to many complications that can occur in the fetus or newborn. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the serum endoglin and soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt-1)/placental growth factor (PlGF) ratio in pregnant women at high risk for PE and normal pregnant women and to assess the sensitivity and specificity of endoglin and SFlt-1/PlGF ratio. METHODOLOGY

Maternal Obesity and Neonatal Death in Preterm US Pacific Islander Neonates Using 2 Analytic Approaches.

IMPORTANCE: Owing to a high prevalence of obesity, Pacific Islander individuals in the US are at higher risk for preterm birth (PTB), but outcomes after PTB remain understudied. Existing literature suggests that associations between prepregnancy obesity and neonatal mortality stratified by gestational age (GA) are modest or null, which may be a result of overlooked stratification bias. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association between prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and neonatal death (NND) following PTB by different degrees of prematurity in US Pacific Islander neonates using birth-based and

The Perinatal Committee report: Review of the progress of obstetric healthcare in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Japan's maternal mortality rate and perinatal mortality rate have shown one of the world's most significant declines, positioning Japan at the global forefront of the lowest levels. The nearly logarithmic annual decline in maternal and perinatal mortality rates suggests that, in addition to advances in medicine and healthcare, various types of care for mothers and newborns have played a crucial role in this achievement. METHOD: From the period of World War II to the postwar era, up to around 1980, and then every decade thereafter, the events and movements surrounding perinatal hea

What Is the Most Dangerous Time of Birth for Uncomplicated First-Time Mothers and Their Neonates in a Tertiary Obstetric Center?

BACKGROUND: Whether the timing of birth affects fetal or maternal outcomes is still controversial. Compared with multiparae, primiparae are a special obstetric group that are more likely to develop labor abnormalities that require intervention. The aim of this study was to investigate the time of delivery and perinatal morbidity with a focus on uncomplicated but first-time pregnancies. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed all births of uncomplicated first-time mothers who intended vaginal delivery. The delivery times were clustered into 2-h intervals and by day of the week. A 5-min Apga

Mini-laparotomy to avoid vascular injury during fetoscopic laser ablation in a case of twin-twin transfusion syndrome with anterior wall placenta: Report of a case complicated with renal dysplasia and cord-around-trunk in donor cotwin and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a special complication of monochorionic (MC) twins, with unbalanced flows through vascular anastomoses within the placenta, causing hemodynamic derangement that can adversely affect perinatal outcome. The initial clinical manifestations of TTTS may be hypovolemic and oliguric of the donor cotwin (the "struck" twin), and hypervolemia and polyureic of the recipient cotwin under prenatal ultrasound. However, the mortality rate can reach 90 % if left untreated. Fetoscopic laser ablation (FLA) is considered the golden treatment standard of TTTS. H

Maternal Vitamin D Status and Its Association with Neonatal Health: Clinical Implications and Influencing Factors.

Introduction: Adequate maternal vitamin D status during pregnancy is essential for fetal skeletal development and neonatal vitamin D reserves. Evidence from Central and Eastern Europe on maternal deficiency, its determinants, and supplementation effectiveness in late pregnancy is limited. This study assessed the impact of 2000 IU/day and 4000 IU/day maternal vitamin D supplementation during the third trimester, compared to no supplementation, on maternal and neonatal 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)2D] levels at birth, and explored sociodemographic, obstetric, dietary, and lifestyle factors affecti

Maternal Endocrine and Metabolic Health and Outcomes (MEMO): a prospective cohort study of gestational diabetes mellitus and subclinical hypothyroidism in China.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, more and more evidence has confirmed the “Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD)” hypothesis, which states that adverse environments in early life can increase the risk of long-term metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) during pregnancy are the most common endocrine diseases, which directly interfere with the intrauterine development environment of the fetus and thus are ideal research entry points for validating and extending the DOHaD theory. OBJECTIVE: This study aim

Application of group-based trajectory models to evaluate the association of fetal growth trajectories and childhood overweight and obesity: A longitudinal study with 2-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether fetal growth trajectory (FGT) can predict adverse childhood growth outcomes. The correlation between maternal metabolic factors (e.g., body mass index (BMI), diabetes during pregnancy) and FGT was evaluated. METHOD: 1525 women with singleton pregnancies were included in this study. Fetal growth was assessed at least three times at 20-24 weeks of gestation, 28-32 weeks, and ≥36 weeks. Children's growth was monitored from birth to 2 years old. A population-based trajectory model was used to analyze the changes in FGT with gestational age and the associ

Incretin receptor agonism during pregnancy: implications for mother and baby.

Obesity has been described by the WHO as the largest health threat facing mankind. More than 55% of pregnancies in the United Kingdom occur in women who are overweight or living with obesity. Obesity in pregnancy increases the risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a condition that affects one in seven pregnancies globally and is associated with short- and long-term risks for both mother and baby. Therefore, optimising treatment to effectively treat both obesity and GDM in the perinatal period could have wide-ranging benefits for mother and child. Stabilised analogues of gluca

Estimating the impact of maternal anemia on low-birth-weight in Sub-Saharan African countries: propensity score matching analysis.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight is the main cause of death, illness, and disability in infancy and childhood and has a lasting effect on adult healing here are several studies that indicate the correlation between low birth weight and anemia using an observational study based on the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) but there are limited studies to show the direct effect of anemia on low birth weight. Therefore, we used the propensity score-matching (PSM) analysis to estimate the actual impact of maternal anemia on low birth weight babies. The study aims to reveal the effect of maternal anemia

Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence, seroconversion rates and genetic variability in humans from Uruguay.

Toxoplasmosis, caused by the obligate intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii, is one of the most prevalent zoonotic parasitic infections worldwide. When acquired during pregnancy, T. gondii can be transmitted to the fetus, with clinical outcomes influenced by gestational age at time of infection and the parasite's genotype. Prenatal screening enables the detection of maternal seroconversion and offers a critical window for intervention. In Uruguay, despite mandatory serological screening during pregnancy, national data on T. gondii seroprevalence and maternal seroconversion have not been upd
