Sporotrichosis is the most frequent subcutaneous mycosis in Latin America. It is caused by species of the genus Sporothrix. Infection in humans occurs through the entry of the fungus into the skin. Zoonotic outbreaks involving cats in the transmission of the disease have been frequently reported. The lymphocutaneous form is the most commonly observed and the upper limbs are the most affected sites. We report a case of a 64-year-old healthy female patient with a lymphocutaneous form with rapid progression of lesions, which was refractory to initial treatment with itraconazole. Treatment with li

BACKGROUND: Hyperthermia is a common monotherapy for sporotrichosis, but only in patients with special conditions, such as pregnancy and nursing. However, hyperthermia has not been used more widely for sporotrichosis in clinical practice.
PATIENTS/METHODS: An HIV-positive adult male with lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis caused by Sporothrix globosa that did not respond to conventional itraconazole therapy lasting >2 months received adjunctive therapy with local hyperthermia. To simulate the effects of heat exposure on the growth and morphology of Sporothrix spp. in vitro, S. globosa, S. schenck

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by pathogenic species of the genus Sporothrix. Since 1998, the number of cases of sporotrichosis due to Sporothrix brasiliensis has grown significantly in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Nearly all cases are related to cats as the main source of fungal infection. We report two cases of sporotrichosis following tattoos, a transmission form of S. brasiliensis not yet reported. The first patient, a 22-year-old female, had cutaneous sporotrichosis, fixed form, over a tattoo in her lumbar region. The lesion appeared 12 weeks after she was tattooed. The second

Sporotrichosis is a frequent subcutaneous mycosis in Madagascar. Extracutaenous forms are exceptional and are usually seen in immunosuppressed hosts. We report a case of an aggressive clinical evolution of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis with osteoarticular involvement in an immunocompetent patient. Therapy with oral itraconazole 200 mg twice daily for 12 months improved the lesion. Early diagnosis of Sporothrix schenkii infection is critical to prevent complications including osteoarticular involvement, disseminated forms and death.

Cutaneous sporotrichosis (CS) presents as asymptomatic lesions of varied morphology. The most common variant is the lymphocutaneous type which typically progresses from a papule to an ulcer and then forms nodules along the superficial lymphatic channels. Diagnosis CS may be challenging when the lesion presents at an uncommon site where the superficial lymphatic drainage is unfamiliar. We present here a case of sporotrichosis of the abdominal wall which was initially misdiagnosed as an abscess but later confirmed by culture and managed successfully.

The authors present a case of Sporothrix schenckii diagnosed in the emergency department, based on a thorough history. The patient presented with skin nodules that had spread proximally up the arm in various stages of healing. He reported minimal pain for the unhealed ulcer and no pain for the healing ulcers, and no other concerning symptoms. The history of a thorn prick followed by the initial red nodule on the forearm has led to the diagnosis - as it was consistent with the classic presentation of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis. A high index of suspicion and carefully noting occupational his

Sporotrichosis is a fungal infection endemic in Latin America and has been attributed to the thermodimorphic fungus of the genus Sporothrix. Transmission to humans occurs during a traumatic injury with soil or organic material; additionally, lesions caused by infected cats play an important role in the epidemiology of the disease. The classic treatment of sporotrichosis is performed with itraconazole or potassium iodide; second-line medications, such as amphotericin B and terbinafine, can alternatively be used in cases of first-line drug failure. In the present study, a patient with lymphocuta

Lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis is a mycotic disease caused by traumatic inoculation of the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii, found ubiquitously in decaying vegetation. The potential for outbreaks, difficulty with timely diagnosis, as well as the prolonged treatment course and recovery from surgical intervention can have a substantial impact on the medical readiness of service members. Treatment with the antifungal therapy of choice, itraconazole, requires close patient monitoring for the duration of treatment for clinical response, drug tolerance, as well as therapeutic drug levels. Sporotrichosis is a subacute-chronic fungal infection caused by dimorphic fungi of the Sporothrix schenckii Complex. It is more common in tropical areas. The prevalence in Argentina is estimated between 0.01 and 0.02%. In half of the patients it manifests as lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis, which occurs after inoculation of the fungus into the skin after minor trauma. The initial lesion is a papule or nodule that occurs with the appearance of an ascending chain of mobile, painless and erythematous subcutaneous nodules. The diagnosis is made from mycological culture. The antifungal of choice is

An autochthonous case of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis caused by Sporothrix schenckii is reported. The patient developed skin lesions localized along the lymphatics that appeared after he suffered an injury while collecting wicker canes in marshy water. The fungus was identified as Sporothrix schenckii by MALDI-TOF and sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis was also performed. Low MIC values were detected for all tested echinocandins and azoles except for fluconazole. The patient was treated with itraconazole without significant improvement. A regression of lesions was observed after 3 months of t

Nocardia brasiliensis is a gram-positive, branched, aerobic, acid-resistant, rod-shaped bacillus that inhabits in soil, rotten organic matter and waters. Cutaneous nocardiosis in immunocompetent individuals can manifest in three different forms: actinomycetoma, superficial skin infection or lymphocutaneous infection. A case of an 85-year-old woman with an ulcerated lesion on the back of her left hand with erythematous papules in the lymphatic tract infected by N. brasiliensis is described. The microorganism was presumptively identified by conventional and inexpensive methods for a medium compl

Cutaneous nocardiosis is a skin disease mainly caused by Nocardia brasiliensis and Nocardia asteroides. Here, we report a rare case of lymphocutaneous dermatosis in an 87-year-old Chinese man infected with Nocardia brasiliensis. An 87-year-old Chinese man presented at our hospital after suffering erythema, nodules, abscesses, ulceration, and pain in the left upper limb for 10 days. The patient was initially misdiagnosed as lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis. The results of gram staining, acid-fast staining, mass spectrograph revealed Nocardia brasiliensis and 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) sequencin

Sporotrichosis is a cutaneous mycosis caused by a dimorphic fungus, Sporothrix schenckii species complex clinically presenting as lymphocutaneous, fixed, or disseminated forms. A typical lesion is an erythematous papule, noduloulcerative lesion usually occurring at the site of penetrating trauma, mostly on the extremities. Verrucous lesion is an unusual presentation of sporotrichosis which can mimic the verrucous lesions seen in chromoblastomycosis, tuberculosis verruca cutis/lupus vulgaris (TBVC/LV), cutaneous leishmaniasis, and blastomycosis leading to diagnostic dilemma. Herein, we describe

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous and chronic fungal infection that is caused by a dimorphic fungus, namely Sporothrix schenckii sensu lato. Lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis is the most clinical form, which accounts for nearly 80% of the cases of cutaneous sporotrichosis. Platelets contain several substances with antimicrobial properties. Regarding this, the present study was performed to investigate the effect of blood-based biomaterials, especially platelets in the treatment of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was performed on 12 golden

Sporotrichosis is an infection caused by the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii and related species that often arises from traumatic inoculation of inhabited soil and organic debris into skin. The infection is usually limited to the skin in immunocompetent patients, usually as lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis. Accurate diagnosis rests on clinical data and culture, and might be facilitated by biopsy identification of suppurative and granulomatous inflammation with fungal elements. In this Grand Round, we present a dramatic case of cutaneous sporotrichosis initially presented with an atypical l
