In this study, we aimed to analyse the clinical features of the third-trimester pregnant women, with echogenic amniotic fluid and to compare their obstetric and neonatal outcomes with pregnant women with normal amniotic fluid echogenicity. This case-control study was conducted in a tertiary antenatal care centre. A total of 560 term (37-42 weeks of gestation) singleton women; 280 with echogenic particles in amniotic fluid and 280 with clear amniotic fluid, who delivered within 24 h after the ultrasound scan were evaluated. The women in the two groups were similar in terms of age, parity, body

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: We aim to add to the few reports on tacrolimus concentrations in breast milk and in maternal, umbilical vein and neonatal blood after maternal renal transplantation.
CASE SUMMARY: In a 30-year-old pregnant woman, the tacrolimus concentration at delivery was the same in maternal, umbilical vein and neonatal blood. The breast milk/maternal blood tacrolimus ratio ranged from 0.40 to 0.64.
WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: The maternal and neonatal blood tacrolimus concentrations at birth are equivalent; thus, one must assume that maternal tacrolimus concentrations directl

After more than 1 year of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, a great deal of knowledge on how this virus affects pregnant women, the fetus and the newborn has accumulated. The gap between different guidelines how to handle newborn infants during this pandemic has been minimized, and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)'s recommendations are now more in accordance with those of the World Health Organization (WHO). In this article we summarize present knowledge regarding transmission from mother to the fetus/newborn. Although both vertical and horizontal transmission are rare, SARS-CoV-2 positivity is

Iron is essential for the functioning of all cells and organs, most critically for the developing brain in the fundamental neuronal processes of myelination, energy and neurotransmitter metabolism. Iron deficiency, especially in the first 1000 days of life, can result in long-lasting, irreversible deficits in cognition, motor function and behaviour. Pregnant women, infants and young children are most vulnerable to iron deficiency, due to their high requirements to support growth and development, coupled with a frequently inadequate dietary supply. An unrecognised problem is that even if iron i

Amniotic band syndrome (ABS) is a congenital abnormality that can cause a variety of deformities. Here, we report a case of ABS in which the amniotic band adhered to the skull, causing a partial cranial defect that was difficult to differentiate from an occipital encephalocele. The mother was a 24-year-old with an unremarkable medical and family history. Ultrasonography performed at 16 weeks showed that the fetus had a membranous structure in the occipital region. Occipital encephalocele was suspected, and she underwent cesarean section at 38 weeks. A male newborn was delivered, and his left o

Labor pain is not only an unpleasant mental experience, but one of the most important factors that may negatively affect the course of labor and the well-being of the fetus. Over the years, many techniques for relieving labor pain have been developed, ranging from non-pharmacological (acupuncture, TENS, hypnosis...), through opioids and aeriform anesthetics, to regional analgesia techniques. Numerous studies and meta-analyzes prove that central blockades are the gold standard of labor analgesia and debunk the myths that these blockages are negatively limited to the course of labor. In the ligh

Pregnancy after renal transplantation is associated with an increased risk of complications. While a delicately balanced uterine immune system is essential for a successful pregnancy, little is known about the uterine immune environment of pregnant kidney transplant recipients. Moreover, children born to kidney transplant recipients are exposed in utero to immunosuppressive drugs, with possible consequences for neonatal outcomes. Here, we defined the effects of kidney transplantation on the immune cell composition during pregnancy with a cohort of kidney transplant recipients as well as health

Preeclampsia is one of the most worrisome complications during pregnancy, affecting approximately 1 out of 20 women worldwide. Preeclampsia is mainly characterized by a sustained hypertension, proteinuria, also involving a significant organ dysfunction. Moreover, 25% of the cases could be classified as severe preeclampsia (SP), a serious condition that could be life-threatening for both the mother and fetus. Although there are many studies focusing on preeclampsia, less efforts have been made in SP, frequently limited to some specific situations. Thus, the present study aims to conduct a compa

Background: Congenital high airway obstruction syndrome (CHAOS) is a rare condition characterized by complete obstruction of the upper fetal airways. Left untreated, it is uniformly fatal. Ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) has been used to establish a surgical airway in affected fetuses during delivery. While this procedure benefits those fetuses that survive to delivery, high mortality in the prenatal period necessitates earlier innovative strategies. Herein, we report a novel technique for in utero intervention. Methods: A fetoscopic intervention was performed at 28 weeks on a 35-year-ol

Corticosteroid administration before anticipated preterm birth is a well known antenatal therapy available to improve newborn outcomes. Doppler studies of maternal and foetal vessels provide a way to understand how corticosteroid affects and improves foetal respiratory outcome. This study was registered on 8th of October, 2017 by Menoufia Faculty of Medicine Board with registration number 222-2-10-2017. It included 80 pregnant women divided into two groups. Each group consisted of 40 participants. Group A: participants were between 28 weeks and 34 weeks of gestation and were at risk of preterm

OBJECTIVE: Since its emergence in late 2019, severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), the novel coronavirus that causes novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has spread globally. Within the United States, some of the most affected regions have been New York, and Northern New Jersey. Our objective is to describe the impact of COVID-19 in a large delivery service in Northern New Jersey, including its effects on labor and delivery (L&D), the newborn nursery, and the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between April 21, 2020 and May 5, 2020, a tot

The physiologic processes of pregnancy and childbirth can determine the future well-being of mothers and children due to the great quantity and quality of modifications that these processes require in all areas of the female body and fetus. Recent evidence has confirmed that modern unhealthy lifestyles negatively affect pregnancy outcomes. Engaging in unhealthy habits during pregnancy increases the risk of chronic disease in both the mother and the fetus. Regarding physical exercise during pregnancy, throughout history, many professionals and scientists have reported the best gestational condi

We screened all fetal echocardiograms performed at our institution for the past 5 years for the indication of family history of cardiomyopathy. Twenty-six patients were identified who had fetal echocardiograms performed due to a family history of cardiomyopathy. Three out of 26 patients (11.5%) had findings of decreased ventricular function and dilation consistent with cardiomyopathy. All who had cardiomyopathy on fetal echocardiography had parents with genetic mutations (2 maternal, 1 paternal), including one mother who had a cardiac transplant at age 8 for dilated cardiomyopathy. All 3 affec

COVID-19 was declared to be a pandemic due to the rapid increase of cases around the world, including the number of pregnant women. Data about vertical transmission of COVID-19 are still limited and controversial: in most cases, although a positive mother, the virus could not be isolated in amniotic fluid, cord blood, breast milk or neonatal throat swab in these patients. No data have been published about possible intrauterine sonographic signs of infection. A pregnant woman was diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 at 35+5 weeks of gestation and managed conservatively at home. At transabdominal ultrasoun

Background The pandemic caused by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) is quite a challenging experience for the world. At the moment of birth, the fetus is prepared to face the challenge of labor and the exposure to the outside world, meaning that labor and birth represent the first extrauterine major exposure to a complex microbiota. The vagina, which is a canal for reproduction, is by evolution separated (but not far) from the anus and urethra. Passing through the birthing canal is a mechanism for intergenerational transmission of vaginal and gut microorganisms for the vertical transmi

INTRODUCTION: Sub-Saharan Africa has low Caesarean (CS) levels, despite a global increase in CS use. In conflict settings, the pattern of CS use is unclear because of scanty data. We aimed to examine the opportunity of using routine facility data to describe the CS use in conflict settings.
METHODS: We conducted a facility-based cross-sectional study in 8 health zones (HZ) of South Kivu province in eastern DR Congo. We reviewed patient hospital records, maternity registers and operative protocol books, from January to December 2018. Data on direct conflict fatalities were obtained from the Up

OBJECTIVES: With improved access to intrauterine transfusion (IUT), more fetuses with haemoglobin Bart's hydrops fetalis (HBHF; homozygous α0-thalassaemia) will survive.
DESIGN: To evaluate the long-term outcome of affected fetuses with and without IUT in Ontario, Canada, we retrospectively collected data on IUTs and pregnancy outcomes in all cases of HBHF, from 1989 to 2014. Clinical outcome and neurocognitive profiles of long-term survivors were also collected and compared with data from 24 patients with transfusion-dependent β-thalassaemia (TDT-β).
RESULTS: Of the 99 affected pregnancies
