There are multiple epidemiological studies that document the potential adverse affects of autoimmunity on nearly every aspect of reproduction, even in the absence of clinically manifest autoimmune disease. Two decades ago, it was suggested that women with autoimmune diseases avoid pregnancy due to inordinate risks to the mother and the child. In contrast, newer epidemiological data demonstrated that advances in the treatment of autoimmune diseases and the management of pregnant women with these diseases have similarly improved the prognosis for mother and child. In particular, if pregnancy is

Few papers have investigated the cytokine profiles of multiple cytokines in cord blood. We obtained cord blood samples from 224 infants admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit. Cytokine profiles of 17 cytokines were investigated using cytometric bead array technology. We found a wide variety of cytokines of various levels which ranged from 0.59pg/ml (in Interleukin (IL)-4) to 222.0pg/ml (in macrophage inflammatory protein-1beta. Pro-inflammatory cytokines were highly correlated with each other and with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor and IL-8. On the contrary, IL-5, IL-13, and IL-17

The health of mothers and their children is of critical importance, both as a reflection of the current health status of a large segment of the world's population and as a predictor of the health of the next generation. A range of indicators of maternal and neonatal health exist-those primarily affecting pregnant and postpartum women, and those affecting the health and survival of infants. Pregnancy outcome may be affected by toxicant exposure, maternal habits, occupational hazards, psychosocial factors, socioeconomic status, racial disparity, chronic stress, and infections. An increase in obs

Cerebral palsy (CP) affects 2/1 000 live-born children. There are several antenatal factors, including preterm delivery, low birth weight, infection/inflammation, multiple gestations, and other pregnancy complications, that have been associated with CP in both the preterm and term infant, with birth asphyxia playing a minor role. Due to the increasing survival of the very preterm and very low birth weight infant secondary to improvements in neonatal and obstetric care, the incidence of CP may be increasing. The topics of neonatal encephalopathy and CP, as well as hypoxic-ischemic encephalopath

Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) is mainly due to a pathologic slow-down in the fetal growth pace, resulting in a fetus that is unable to reach its growth potential. IUGR frequency will vary depending on the discrimination criteria adopted. It is extremely important to use local or national fetal growth graphs in order to avoid some confounding factors. IUGR incidence in newborns would be between 3% and 7% of the total population. In our experience it is 5.13% a figure similar to the one obtained by other authors but with a progressively higher incidence during the last decade. There are

There is a paucity of studies on the effect of intrauterine conditions on subsequent progeny performance in dairy cows. Using a large national data set on Irish Holstein-Friesian dairy cows, the objective of this study was to determine if intrauterine conditions, quantified by a maternal genetic variance component, significantly affected milk production, age at first calving, calving interval, somatic cell score (natural logarithm of somatic cell count) and survival in first-, second-, and third-parity female offspring. Maternal genetic variance for each trait in each parity was estimated in a

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) is a severe disease, resulting from maternal red cell (RBC) alloantibodies directed against fetal RBCs. The effect of a first-trimester antibody screening program on the timely detection of HDFN caused by antibodies other than anti-D was evaluated.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Nationwide, all women (1,002 in 305,000 consecutive pregnancies during 18 months) with alloantibodies other than anti-D, detected by a first-trimester antibody screen, were included in a prospective index-cohort study. In a parallel-coverage validation study, pa

The incidence of maternal-to-fetal human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) transmission is 25-30% in absence of antiretroviral therapy, and is inversely associated with Human leukocyte antigens (HLA) class-I discordance. Based on our earlier report that mixed lymphocyte reactions (MLR) induce a ribonuclease (RNase) that inhibits HIV-1 replication, we proposed that maternal-fetal alloantigen stimulation activates factors that protect the fetus against vertically-transmitted infections. We investigate here whether the degree of mother-infant HLA discordance associates with the ability to pro

Poor, urban, and immigrant populations are at far greater risk for lead exposure than are other groups in the United States. Children with even slightly elevated blood lead levels are at increased risk for significant neurobehavioral problems that can extend through adolescence. Research has shown that elevated blood lead levels in pregnant women, even those well below 10 micrograms per deciliter-the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's "level of concern"-can cause miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight, and subsequent developmental delays in their children. Despite these well-

Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a major risk to human health, and the home is the greatest single source of ETS for children. The authors investigated fetal exposure to paternal smoking at home during pregnancy. Korean families were included as trios of fathers, mothers, and neonates identified in 2005-2007. Sixty-three trios were finally enrolled in this study after exclusion of those in which the mother was a smoker or was regularly exposed to ETS at places other than the home. Nicotine and cotinine concentrations in hair were measured by using liquid chromatography-tandem m

BACKGROUND: Adverse pregnancy outcomes have been related to environmental and/or genetic factors. Of interest are genes associated with the clotting system as any perturbation in the balance of thrombotic and thrombolytic cascades could affect the placental circulation and hence the viability of the developing fetus. Several previous reports using relatively small numbers of cases and controls have suggested that there is a relationship between poor pregnancy outcomes and two polymorphisms, one in the factor V gene, the 1691G to A change (rs6025) located on chromosome 1q23 (factor V Leiden, FV

Viral infections may be vertically transmitted from mother to child at different times, ranging from in utero transmission, which occurs during pregnancy, perinatal transmission, which takes place during delivery and postnatal transmission, which is usually the consequence of breastfeeding. Mother-to-child transmission, which may occur after primary, recurrent or chronic maternal infection, is potentially harmful to the fetus or the newborn since it may result in miscarriage, fetal death, congenital anomalies, intrauterine growth restriction, or severe neonatal disease. Some risk factors are t

Long-range transport of pollutants towards circumpolar regions emphasizes the need for up-to-date and reliable biological monitoring data. This paper explores the use, reliability and availability of maternal blood (MB) and plasma (MP), cord blood (CB) and plasma (CP) and mother's milk (MM) in terms of assessing exposure to persistent toxic substances (PTSs). It is concluded that MP has the best combination of availability, sensitivity in terms of number of PTSs, their detection frequency and concentrations, and physiological relevance. The study group consisted of 48 pregnant women of indigen

Methylmercury (MeHg) is one of the most hazardous substances that affects the fetus through fish consumption. The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes in the level of exposure to MeHg by assessing the mercury (Hg) concentrations of the segmental hair at parturition and 3 months after parturition, and to study their correlations with the total Hg concentrations of maternal and cord red blood cells (RBCs) and neonatal hair as biomarkers of fetal exposure to MeHg at parturition. In total, 40 paired samples of maternal hair from the scalp, maternal and cord RBCs, and 21 samples of n

Toxoplasmosis is a very common and asymptomatic infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii. Pregnant women can develop serious complications if the infection passes to the developing fetus. Primary infection in the pregnant women during the gestation period will result in the development of severe systemic disease with temporary parasitemia and will affect the developing fetus. Several clinical complications can be observed in the congenitally infected children which include mild disease to serious health defects such as mental retardation. The aim of the current study was to determine the seroprev

Methylmercury (MeHg) is one of the most risky substances to affect humans through fish consumption, and the fetus is known to be in the most susceptible group. Our objective in this study is to examine the relationships of total mercury (THg) and MeHg concentrations between umbilical cord tissue and other tissues as biomarkers of fetal exposure to MeHg in the Japanese population. In total, 116 paired samples were collected in three Japanese districts, the Tsushima Islands, Fukuoka City, and Katsushika ward of metropolitan Tokyo. THg was measured for hair and THg and MeHg were measured in cord

Placental size may be influenced by maternal factors, placental function as well as the fetal condition. So far, no studies have examined how the fetal oxygen-carrying capacity or haemoglobin/haematocrit levels would affect placental growth in normal human pregnancies. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between placental size and fetal arterial cord blood haemoglobin and haematocrit levels at the time of caesarean delivery. Umbilical arterial cord blood was taken for arterial haemoglobin and haematocrit levels immediately after delivery. The relative placental size (def

Maternal smoking during pregnancy inhibits fetal growth, and is a major cause of childhood and adult morbidity, including increased risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. However, the use of birthweight as a proxy for future smoking-related morbidity is hindered by its wide variability, suggesting a role for other birthweight-modifying factors. We report here, for the first time, that interactions between specific fetal HLA-DQA1 and DQB1 alleles and maternal smoking can influence birthweight. We compared mean birthweights of a series of term, HLA-DQ typed white UK newborns (n = 552) who

Preterm birth is associated with immature digestive function that may require the use of total parenteral nutrition and special oral feeding regimens. Little is known about the responses to oral food in the preterm neonate and how enteral nutrients affect the immature gastrointestinal tract (GIT). In vivo studies are difficult to perform in laboratory rodents because of their small body size and that of immature organs at birth, and this makes the large farm animals (e.g., pigs, cattle, sheep) more attractive models in this field. In these species, preterm delivery at 88%-95% gestation is asso

The immune system exists to protect the host against pathogenic organisms and highly complex pathways of recognition, response, elimination and memory have evolved in order to fulfil this role. The immune system also acts to ensure tolerance to 'self', to food and other environmental components, and to commensal bacteria. A breakdown in the tolerogenic pathways can also lead to inflammatory diseases. The prevalence of inflammatory diseases, including atopic disorders, has increased over the last 60 years. The development of tolerance is the result of active immune mechanisms and both developme
