BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is a subacute or chronic disease, usually affecting the skin caused by a dimorphic (existing in two forms), aerobic (oxygen requiring) fungus called Sporothrix schenckii. Oral potassium iodide is widely used for cutaneous sporotrichosis in clinical medicine with more and more reports published. However, the benefits and adverse reactions of these treatments have not yet been systematically reviewed.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of oral potassium iodide for the treatment of sporotrichosis.
SEARCH STRATEGY: In July 2009 we searched the Cochrane Skin Group Specia

Since 1998 a cat-transmitted epidemic of sporotrichosis has been observed in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil. Besides the lymphocutaneous and fixed forms, other presentations, such as disseminated cutaneous and mucosal involvement, as well as for the first time, erythema nodosum and erythema multiforme have been reported associated with sporotrichosis. This study investigates the phenotypes and genotypes of Sporothrix schenckii isolates recovered from different clinical forms of the disease noted as part of this epidemic. A total of 88 isolates recovered from 59 cases associated with the epidemic

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for specific antibody detection in serum specimens of patients with sporotrichosis. The assay was made with mycelial-phase Sporothrix schenckii exoantigens and was tested against 90 sera from patients with different clinical forms of sporotrichosis. Potential cross-reactions were analyzed with 72 heterologous sera from patients with paracoccidioidomycosis, cryptococcosis, aspergillosis, histoplasmosis, tuberculosis, and American tegumentary leishmaniasis, as well as 76 sera from healthy controls. We found a sensitivity of 97% and a spe

Sporotrichosis is caused by a thermo-dependent dimorphic fungus, Sporothrix schenckii. The major clinical manifestations occur in the skin; however, cases of visceral manifestations have also been increasingly reported with some being observed in immune compromised patients. Different virulence of individual S. schenckii strain as well as immune status of the host could contribute to form such different clinical manifestations. Thus, the purpose of the study was to investigate whether different virulence of individual S. schenckii could be a factor for such clinical difference. We investigated

Sporotrichosis is a chronic subcutaneous mycosis caused by Sporothrix schenckii. This work aimed to evaluate the virulence of two different isolates of S. schenckii from cutaneous (CUT) and systemic (SYS) forms of feline sporotrichosis. A standard inoculum with 2 x 10(3) yeast cells/ml was prepared from each of the isolates. The experimental infection was carried out with 0.1 ml of the inoculum from both isolates and then injected in the paw pads of Swiss albino mice of groups CUT and SYS. The clinical evolution of the disease and the diameter of the lesion at the inoculated sites were evaluat

A statistical study on dermatomycoses for the 30 years from 1968 to 1997 in the dermatologic section of Sendai National Hospital was carried out with the following results. The total number of dermatomycosis patients was 14,259 and accounted for 9.59% of all new outpatients during this period. These cases of dermatomycoses were composed of the following: dermatophytoses 10,656, candidiasis 3,287, malassezia infection 566, sporothrichosis 20, aspergillosis 7, and chromomycosis 1. Annual changes in number of dermatophytoses varied in each clinical type: tinea corporis and tinea cruris had increa

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: With the availability of more number of antifungal agents in recent years, drugs other than saturated solution of potassium iodide (SSKI) are being increasingly used to treat sporotrichosis. It was therefore considered pertinent to evaluate in vitro antifungal susceptibility pattern of Sporothrix schenckii strains isolated at three centers in India against five commonly used antifungal agents.
METHODS: Agar dilution method was used to evaluate 50 clinical isolates (25 from north, 17 from east and 8 from south India) both in its yeast and mycelial forms against amphote

UNLABELLED: The recommendations for the treatment of sporotrichosis were derived primarily from multicenter, nonrandomized treatment trials, small retrospective series, and case reports; no randomized, comparative treatment trials have been reported. Most cases of sporotrichosis are non life-threatening localized infections of the skin and subcutaneous tissues that can be treated with oral antifungal agents. The treatment of choice for fixed cutaneous or lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis is itraconazole for 36 months. The preferred treatment for osteoarticular sporotrichosis also is itraconazole,

Major neutral glycosphingolipid components were extracted from Sporothrix schenckii, a dimorphic fungus exhibiting a hyphal saprophytic phase and a yeast parasitic phase responsible for chronic mycotic infections in mammalian hosts. These components, one from the mycelial form and two from the yeast form, were purified and their structures were elucidated by (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and tandem ESI-MS/MS. All three were characterized as cerebrosides (monohexosylceramides) containing (4E, 8E)-9-methyl-4,8-sphingadieni

An epidemiological investigation on dermatophytoses in Japan for the year 1996 was carried out with the following results. The number of dermatomycoses patients visiting the fifteen cooperating institutes that year was 8,402. New outpatients with this condition accounted for 13.1% of all new outpatients in these institutes. Dermatophytoses patients numbered 7,395 and were composed of: tinea pedis 4,764 (64.4%), tinea unguium 1,487 (20.1%), tinea corporis 558 (7.5%), tinea cruris 369 (5.0%), tinea manuum 195 (2.6%), tinea capitis 11, kerion Celsi 7, tinea barbae 1 and other forms 3. Isolates of Sporothrix schenckii were examined for their infectivity in BALB/c mice. The mice were injected with yeast forms of S. schenckii isolates differing in clinical source (human cutaneous lesions and pulmonary lesions), and fungal growth was determined at intervals in the footpad and visceral organs. After subcutaneous injection of approximately 10 colony forming units (cfu) of S. schenckii into the footpad, locally restricted fungal infection developed gradually. At the peak of the infection (3-4 weeks post-inoculation), viable fungal counts reached 102-106 cfu/footpad. Dissemination

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous fungal infection caused by the traumatic implantation of the dimorphic, pathogenic fungus, Sporothrix schenkii. It constitutes the most common subcutaneous fungal infection in the general population in South Africa. Sporotrichosis in South Africa dates back to 1914, when the disease was first diagnosed in the gold mines. Occupational and recreational circumstances of infection are well established, and the environmental requirements for contracting the disease are better understood. Sporotrichosis cases were recorded from 42 suburbs in the greater Pretoria area

Defense mechanisms against Sporothrix schenckii were studied using mouse models. After an intracutaneous injection of the yeast form of S. schenckii to the dorsal skin of the congenitally athymic nude and normal heterozygote littermate mice, nodules were formed. They regressed and disappeared in 10 weeks in the case of normal mice. On the other hand, nodules and then ulceration developed progressively in nude mice until all animals expired by dissemination of microorganisms at the 11th week of inoculation. Histopathologically the migrated cells were similar in both the normal and the nude mice

Sporotrichosis is a fungal infection caused by the dimorphic organism, Sporothrix schenkii. This etiologic agent typically gains entrance into the skin by traumatic implantation of infected soil or plant materials. The majority of cases are of the fixed cutaneous or lymphangitic cutaneous varieties, and less commonly, hematogenous dissemination to skin or viscera occurs. Untreated, the disease may spontaneously resolve or persist and gradually progress over time, its virulence being less than that of other dimorphic fungi. Potassium iodide remains a favored treatment for uncomplicated cutaneou

Itraconazole is a highly lipophilic triazolic compound, scarcely soluble in acidified polyethylene glycol, and soluble in hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin. It possesses an excellent digestive adsorption and its peak plasma level after oral administration of 100 mg is 0.16 microgram/ml at 3 or 4 h after drug intake. Half-life of itraconazole ranges between 17 to 21 h and 99.8% binds to plasmatic proteins, especially albumin. Metabolization is mainly done in the liver where inactive metabolites are formed with the exception of hydroxy-itraconazole, which exhibits a discrete antifungal activity. S

Although an uncommon cause of arthritis, sporotrichosis may mimic other forms of joint disease and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a patient with a chronic monoarticular arthritis or if granulomatous synovitis is recognized by histologic examination. Characteristic skin findings may be absent, repeated cultures may be necessary, severe osseous destructive changes can occur, and surgical extirpation of the diseased tissue combined with amphotericin B chemotherapy is recommended.

The susceptibility of splenectomized mice to Sporothrix schenckii was studied, and the role of the spleen in the host defense is discussed. S. schenckii Sp-1 and ddy male mice were used. The mice were divided into 3 groups consisting of splenectomized, sham-operated and intact mice. Each mouse was inoculated intravenously with 2 X 10(6) yeast cells 7 days after operation and the mice were sacrified at adequate intervals for 30 days. Then histological sections stained with H&E or by PAS were prepared from various visceral organs. Using the liver sections the number of yeast cells in a 40 mm2 wa

Sporotrichosis is a mycosis which in our country has been described as only producing cutaneous and subcutaneous infections; in other countries it has been reported as causing pulmonary, bone, joint and meningeal infections. Possibly the systemic form also occurs in Venezuela since, along with the causative agent, all other factors considered as predisposing to systemic infection exist here. Through immunodiffusion (ID) and immunoelectrophoresis (IEP) and using a filamentous form metabolic antigen from Sporothrix schenckii, we were able to demonstrate precipitating antibodies against this fung

Sporothrix schenckii antigens were tested with seventy-nine sera from human cases of sporotrichosis for their value in the serological diagnosis of extracutaneous forms of the disease. 55.7% of the sera reacted in the tube agglutination test; 29.1% of them were positive by counter immunoelectrophoresis and only 7.6% reacted in the simple immunodiffusion test. There was a clear correlation between agglutination titers and the respective reactivity of sera by counter immunoelectrophoresis. By immunoelectrophoresis, 2 different anodic precipitin bands were observed between S. schenckii metabolic

A review of the clinical features of seven patients with sporotrichosis arthritis showed that six had joint infection without previous skin or lung involvement and that one with myelofibrosis had joint and skin infection. The average time from onset of joint symptoms to diagnosis was 25 months, resulting in joint damage that required arthrodesis in four patients. Tissue from open synovial biopsy was superior to synovial fluid for obtaining a positive culture; concomitant synovial fluid and synovial tissue cultures were superior to either one alone. Granulomatous inflammation was seen in synovi
