Vasopressin concentrations were measured in the cord blood of thirty infants, thirteen delivered vaginally and seventeen by Caesarean section. There was no correlation with maternal values but the concentration following vaginal delivery (13.5 microunits/ml +/- 7.9 SD) was significantly higher than that following Caesarean section (4.2 microunits/ml +/- 6.6 SD). Gestational age did not affect the concentrations, which fell during the first week of life and then rose gradually in term and pre-term infants. High levels were found in seven sick babies. A large family with myotonia dystrophica has been recognized in an isolated area of Labrador. The complete family tree showed 29 of 108 members to be affected, including an infant with the congenital form of the disease. We describe the course and outcome of 23 pregnancies in six women affected by myotonia dystrophica in a large Labrador family. A seventh patient had 14 pregnancies, so that the infertility commonly described in this disorder did not apply to this family. The rate of complications was high, particularly in respect of polyhydramnios, premature onset of labor, cesarean section, postpartum hemorrhage, and neonatal deaths. A neonatal intensive care unit was established at one hospital in 1972 when the neonatal mortality was 7.6 and the perinatal mortality 20.9 per 1000 deliveries. A marked drop in perinatal mortality at St. Louis City Hospital No. 1 (SLCH) from 1974 to 1975 (39.7 vs 20.6 per 1000 births) prompted a detailed analysis of various factors which might have effected the change. Comparisons were also made between SLCH and St. Mary's Health Center (SMHC), a private hospital affiliated with St. Louis University. The significant drop in perinatal mortality at SLCH in 1975 seems to be due to a combination of various factors: 1) improvement in antepartum care, 2) increase use of cesarean sections, and 3) the influence of intrapartum fetal monitoring.

In 50 cases of Caesarean section for various indication, methoxyflurane was administered to two groups of patients in two different dosages by a Pentec-vaporizer. The fate of 80 infants delivered after induction of labour in 72 Rh-sensitized mothers was studied to determine whether the stillbirth rate could be reduced. Labour was induced at 32 to 39 weeks of gestation; the criteria for induction were based on the history of previously affected infants, and a maternal Rh-antibody titre of 1/40 or greater, using an indirect antiglobulin technique.
