Live birth prevalence of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn in the United States from 1996 to 2010.

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) is mediated by maternal alloantibodies, a consequence of immune sensitization during pregnancy with maternal-fetal incompatibility with ABO, Rhesus factor (Rh), and/or other red blood cell antigens. RhD, Kell, and other non-ABO alloantibodies are the primary cause of moderate to severe HDFN, whereas ABO HDFN is typically mild. HDFN live birth prevalence owing to Rh alloimmunization among newborns in the United States was last estimated to be 106 per 100,000 births in 1986. HDFN live birth prevalence owing to all alloantibodies was e

How safe is the treatment of pregnant women with fear of childbirth using eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy? Obstetric outcomes of a multi-center randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnant women with fear of childbirth display an elevated risk of a negative delivery experience, birth-related post-traumatic stress disorder, and adverse perinatal outcomes such as preterm birth, low birthweight, and postpartum depression. One of the therapies used to treat fear of childbirth is eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. The purpose of the present study was to determine the obstetric safety and effectiveness of EMDR therapy applied to pregnant women with fear of childbirth. Maternal and Newborn Characteristics-A Comparison between Healthy and Thrombophilic Pregnancy.

A thrombophilic woman is more likely to experience difficulties during pregnancy, difficulties that will also affect the development of the newborn. This study aims to compare maternal and newborn characteristics between healthy and thrombophilic pregnancy. The following characteristics were analysed: maternal characteristics (BMI- body mass index, haemostasis parameters, thrombophilia-specific treatment) and newborn characteristics (gestational period, birth weight, the Apgar score). This follow-up study spanning five years, from 2018 to 2022, focuses on a cohort of 500 women who underwent de

Interventions affecting the nitric oxide pathway versus placebo or no therapy for fetal growth restriction in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a condition of poor growth of the fetus in utero. One of the causes of FGR is placental insufficiency. Severe early-onset FGR at < 32 weeks of gestation occurs in an estimated 0.4% of pregnancies. This extreme phenotype is associated with a high risk of fetal death, neonatal mortality, and neonatal morbidity. Currently, there is no causal treatment, and management is focused on indicated preterm birth to prevent fetal death. Interest has risen in interventions that aim to improve placental function by administration of pharmacological agents affect

Quantitative Proteomics of Maternal Blood Plasma in Isolated Intrauterine Growth Restriction.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) remains a significant concern in modern obstetrics, linked to high neonatal health problems and even death, as well as childhood disability, affecting adult quality of life. The role of maternal and fetus adaptation during adverse pregnancy is still not completely understood. This study aimed to investigate the disturbance in biological processes associated with isolated IUGR via blood plasma proteomics. The levels of 125 maternal plasma proteins were quantified by liquid chromatography-multiple reaction monitoring mass spectrometry (LC-MRM MS) with corre

Prenatal exposures to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and epigenetic aging in umbilical cord blood: The Healthy Start study.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous, environmentally persistent chemicals, and prenatal exposures have been associated with adverse child health outcomes. Prenatal PFAS exposure may lead to epigenetic age acceleration (EAA), defined as the discrepancy between an individual's chronologic and epigenetic or biological age. OBJECTIVES: We estimated associations of maternal serum PFAS concentrations with EAA in umbilical cord blood DNA methylation using linear regression, and a multivariable exposure-response function of the PFAS mixture using Bayesian kernel mach

Comprehensive Review of Hypertensive Disorders Related to Pregnancy.

Hypertensive disorder of pregnancy is a common complication during pregnancy that affects approximately 10% of pregnancies and is responsible for nearly 14% of maternal deaths worldwide. It affects the mother and the fetus simultaneously, sometimes putting the health of the mother and the fetus at odds with each other. It may present with only hypertension and proteinuria or with life-threatening complications in the mother such as eclampsia; stroke; acute pulmonary edema; acute renal failure; disseminated intravascular coagulation; placental abruption; hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and l

Effects of bipolar disorder on maternal and fetal health during pregnancy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a mental disorder characterized by mood shifts from severe depression to mania. Pregnant women with BD may experience manic or depressive episodes, so they are usually concerned about the effects of BD on their pregnancy. The aim of this systematic review is to determine the effects of BD on maternal health and fetal health, weight, and development. It also addresses how BD affects the probability of incidence of pregnancy complications in women with bipolar compared with healthy controls. METHODS: Seven electronic databases (Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, MIDRIS,

Impact of social support and mindfulness in the associations between perceived risk of COVID-19 acquisition and pregnancy outcomes in Iranian population: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Various devastating infection outbreaks including COVID-19, threat both mother and fetus health. These life-threating outbreaks as potential harms are highly associated with relevant perceived risk. Social support and mindfulness are two factors that may moderate the associations between the perceived risk of COVID-19 and pregnancy outcomes. In this study we investigated the potential moderating impact of social support and mindfulness in the aforementioned association. METHODS: This study is a longitudinal cohort study in which 483 Iranian pregnant women in Tehran have b

Clinical chorioamnionitis at term: definition, pathogenesis, microbiology, diagnosis, and treatment.

Clinical chorioamnionitis, the most common infection-related diagnosis in labor and delivery units, is an antecedent of puerperal infection and neonatal sepsis. The condition is suspected when intrapartum fever is associated with two other maternal and fetal signs of local or systemic inflammation (eg, maternal tachycardia, uterine tenderness, maternal leukocytosis, malodorous vaginal discharge or amniotic fluid, and fetal tachycardia). Clinical chorioamnionitis is a syndrome caused by intraamniotic infection, sterile intraamniotic inflammation (inflammation without bacteria), or systemic mate

Role of mineral nutrients other than iron in pregnancy: under recognized opportunities to improve maternal/fetal outcomes: a literature review.

BACKGROUND: Anemia during pregnancy is an important global health concern, affecting 40% of women worldwide, and iron deficiency shares a significant proportion of the burden. From conception to birth, pregnancy is a period when women undergo metabolic and physiological changes. The nutritional needs are higher during pregnancy; thus, adequate nutrition is essential to maintain fetal growth and development. However, adverse effects due to deficiency in nutrition during pregnancy can result in maternal, fetal and neonatal complications. Despite the multifactorial etiology of anemia, iron defici

Cord blood metabolomics reveals gestational metabolic disorder associated with anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies positivity.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid disease is one of the common endocrine disorders affecting the pregnant women, in which thyroid autoimmunity can alter the progress and the outcome of pregnancy. Women with euthyroid status but anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) antibodies positivity before pregnancy are prone to subclinical gestational hypothyroidism. However, the connections between anti-TPO antibodies positivity and gestational hypothyroidism remain largely unknown. The aim of the present study is to investigate the differences of fetal metabolic profile at birth according to maternal anti-TPO status. M

Genetics, epigenetics, and transcriptomics of preterm birth.

Preterm birth contributes significantly to neonatal mortality and morbidity. Despite its global significance, there has only been limited progress in preventing preterm birth. Spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB) results from a wide variety of pathological processes. Although many non-genetic risk factors influence the timing of gestation and labor, compelling evidence supports the role of substantial genetic and epigenetic influences and their interactions with the environment contributing to sPTB. To investigate a common and complex disease such as sPTB, various approaches such as genome-wide as

Clinical Comparison of Preterm Birth and Spontaneous Preterm Birth in Severe Preeclampsia.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Severe preeclampsia is accompanied by many complications, which is extremely harmful to pregnant women and fetuses. However, in the classification of preterm birth, it is generally divided into spontaneous preterm birth and therapeutic preterm birth, and insufficient attention has been paid to preterm birth in severe preeclampsia. This article aims to explore the clinical difference between preterm birth in severe preeclampsia and spontaneous preterm birth. In the experiment, this paper selected pregnant women who delivered and were treated in a hospital from April 2010 to April 2020 as cases.

Can helminth and malaria infections affect sex ratio at birth in sub-Saharan Africa? Ideas and hypothesis.

The sex ratio (ratio of boys to girls) at birth (SRB) is about 1.05 (about 105 males to 100 females) under normal conditions and could be an indicator for monitoring demographic changes. Generally, in comparison with female fetuses, the male fetus is biologically weaker and more vulnerable to prenatal events. SRB is influenced by various factors, such as maternal malnourishment. Remarkably, maternal malnourishment and less energy intake are pivotal factors for declining SRB in humans. As estimates, the SRB is below the normal range in sub-Saharan Africa (1.03) than the normal range (1.05). On
