The concentration of selected elements in the placenta according to selected sociodemographic factors and their effect on birth mass and birth length of newborns.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The placenta is a remarkable organ which provides critical transport functions between the maternal and fetal circulations during pregnancy. The demand for mineral components increases during the gestational period, therefore, an appropriate intake of minerals, such as calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, and manganese, determines the correct growth and development of a fetus. The aim of the study was to assess the concentration of selected elements in the placenta, and to assess the impact of their concentrations on the birth weight and birth len

Effect of Antibiotic Treatment of Amniotic Fluid Sludge.

BACKGROUND: Amniotic fluid sludge refers to the sonographic presence of echogenic, free-floating aggregates of debris located within the amniotic cavity near the internal cervical os of women with intact membranes. Clinically, it is independently associated with increased obstetric, infectious, and neonatal morbidity, including: short cervix, chorioamnionitis, and an increased risk of preterm birth. It is thought to be infectious in nature and has been described as an intrauterine bacterial biofilm. There is little evidence on the impact of treatment with antibiotics on outcome. OBJECTIVE: To

Maternal Risk Factors and Perinatal Characteristics in Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia: A Nationwide Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) remains poorly understood. We hypothesize that environmental factors play an important role in the development of CDH. AIM: The objective of this study was to investigate associated maternal risk factors in pregnancies with CDH. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was a nationwide, population-based prospective case-control study consisting of a cohort of newborn children entered into the records of pregnant women receiving antenatal care in Sweden, registered in the Medical Birth Registry during the period from January 1, 1982 to

Association between benzene and congenital anomalies in Oklahoma, 1997-2009.

OBJECTIVES: Although the most common cause of death in infants, little is known about the aetiology of congenital anomalies. Recent studies have increasingly focused on environmental exposures, including benzene. While benzene is known to affect the central nervous system, the effects on the developing fetus are unclear. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the association between ambient benzene exposure and the prevalence of congenital anomalies among 628 121 singleton births in Oklahoma from 1997 to 2009. We obtained benzene from the Environmental Protection Agenc

Toxic Effect of Cigarette Smoke on Brainstem Nicotinic Receptor Expression: Primary Cause of Sudden Unexplained Perinatal Death.

Among the neurotoxicants contained in tobacco smoke, if absorbed during pregnancy, nicotine significantly affects α7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which play essential roles in the development of the brainstem regions receiving cholinergic projections in perinatal life. Immunohistochemical procedures for analysing formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded brainstem samples from 68 fetuses and early newborns, with smoking and non-smoking mothers, who died of known and unknown causes, were carried out in order to determine if nicotine had activated the α7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke leads to increased mitochondrial DNA content in umbilical cord serum associated to reduced gestational age.

We investigated if prenatal exposures to tobacco smoke lead to changes in mitochondrial DNA content (mtDNA) in cord serum and adversely affect newborns' health. Umbilical cord serum cotinine levels were used to determine in utero exposure to smoking. Cord serum mtDNA was measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis of the genes coding for cytochrome c oxidase1 (MT-CO1) and cytochrome c oxidase2 (MT-CO2). Log transformed levels of mtDNA coding for MT-CO1 and MT-CO2 were significantly higher among infants of active smokers with higher serum level of cotinine (p < 0.05) and inverse

Prenatal Exposure to Snus Alters Heart Rate Variability in the Infant.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal use of smoked tobacco during pregnancy causes significant morbidity and mortality in the human infant including alterations in autonomic control with increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome. We hypothesized that maternal snus (smokeless tobacco) use during pregnancy affects autonomic cardiac regulation in the infant, as measured by heart rate variability (HRV) and the low frequency and high frequency ratio (LF/HF ratio). METHODS: A prospective observational study of 56 infants of women who used snus (n = 23) or cigarettes (n = 13) during pregnancy versus tobacco-

The Impacts of Cord Blood Cotinine and Glutathione-S-Transferase Gene Polymorphisms on Birth Outcome.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the association between cord blood cotinine levels and birth outcome, and to determine whether fetal metabolic gene polymorphisms of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) modulate the effect of environmental tobacco smoke exposure during pregnancy. METHODS: This study included 328 maternal and neonatal pairs. Maternal and cord blood cotinine levels were measured using high performance liquid chromatography. The GST T1 (GSTT1) and GST M1 (GSTM1) polymorphisms were examined using the polymerase chain reaction method. The birth outcomes included birth weight

Human Brain Abnormalities Associated With Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a common neurodevelopmental problem, but neuropathologic descriptions are rare and focused on the extreme abnormalities. We conducted a retrospective survey (1980-2016) of autopsies on 174 individuals with prenatal alcohol exposure or an FASD diagnosis. Epidemiologic details and neuropathologic findings were categorized into 5 age groups. Alcohol exposure was difficult to quantify. When documented, almost all mothers smoked tobacco, many abused other substances, and prenatal care was poor or nonexistent. Placental abnormalities were common (68%) in fet

Toxic effects of prenatal exposure to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Tobacco, alcohol, cannabis and cocaine are the most consumed psychoactive drugs throughout the population. Prenatal exposure to these drugs could alter normal foetal development and could threaten future welfare. The main changes observed in prenatal exposure to tobacco are caused by nicotine and carbon monoxide, which can impede nutrient and oxygen exchange between mother and foetus, restricting foetal growth. Memory, learning processes, hearing and behaviour can also be affected. Alcohol may cause physical and cognitive alterations in prenatally exposed infants, fundamentally caused by alter

Pulmonary Effects of Maternal Smoking on the Fetus and Child: Effects on Lung Development, Respiratory Morbidities, and Life Long Lung Health.

Maternal smoking during pregnancy is the largest preventable cause of abnormal in-utero lung development. Despite well known risks, rates of smoking during pregnancy have only slightly decreased over the last ten years, with rates varying from 5-40% worldwide resulting in tens of millions of fetal exposures. Despite multiple approaches to smoking cessation about 50% of smokers will continue to smoke during pregnancy. Maternal genotype plays an important role in the likelihood of continued smoking during pregnancy and the degree to which maternal smoking will affect the fetus. The primary effec

Medical swab touch spray-mass spectrometry for newborn screening of nicotine and cotinine in meconium.

Newborn screening is one of public health concerns designed to screen infants shortly after birth. Prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke such as nicotine has been reported to affect babies. Levels of nicotine and cotinine in meconium were widely used to evaluate the tobacco exposure of foetuses during pregnancy in a polluted environment. In this study, medical swabs were applied by using touch spray-mass spectrometry (TS-MS) to collect meconium from newborn infants for detection of nicotine and cotinine. Parameters such as choice of spray solvents, solvent volume and collision energy for screenin

[Umbilical cord serum hepcidin levels and maternal smoking during pregnancy].

Anemia during pregnancy is a risk factor of disturbance in pre- and postnatal child's development. Hepcidin plays the key role in iron metabolism, as protein participating in the regulation of intestinal absorption of this element and its release from macrophages, and transport across the placenta. Maternal smoking during pregnancy can result in disturbances of iron homeostasis leading to a subclinical deficiency. The depletion of maternal iron can cause fetal hypoxia condition and decreased expression of hepcidin. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of smoking on the levels of hep

The health burden of pollution: the impact of prenatal exposure to air pollutants.

Exposure to atmospheric pollutants in both open and closed environments is a major cause of morbidity and mortality that may be both controlled and minimized. Despite growing evidence, several controversies and disagreements exist among the studies that have analyzed the effects of prenatal pollutant exposure. This review article aims to analyze primary scientific evidence of the effects of air pollution during pregnancy and the impact of these effects on the fetus, infant health, and in particular, the respiratory system. We performed a review of articles from the PubMed and Web of Science da

[Effects of active and passive smoking during pregnancy on the development of gestational hypertension and fetal hypotrophy].

In prenatal life the fetus can be exposed to more incentires which affect the mother. In case of both active and passive smoking by pregnant women many pernicious substances contained in tobacco smoke can influence the foetus. The components of tobacco smoke can contribute to various antenatal complications. The aim of present work was to assess if the data given by the patient in anonymous questionnaire go along with the real exposure to components of smoke assessed on the basis of concentration of nicotine metabolite- cotinine in mother's serum and next to assess the risk of development of g

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as determinants of various anthropometric measures of birth outcome.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants that are known to induce oxidative stress. There have been several reports about the link between PAH exposure and complications in pregnancy. This cross-sectional study was conducted to: (1) measure the levels of benzo(a)anthracene (BaA), chrysene (Ch), benzo(b)fluoranthene (BbF), benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), and dibenzo(a,h)anthracene (DBahA) in placentas and maternal and -umbilical cord blood obtained at delivery from 1578 women between June 2005 and 2006 in the area of Al-Kharj, Saudi Arabia; (2) assess their influe

Bulky dna adducts in cord blood, maternal fruit-and-vegetable consumption, and birth weight in a European mother-child study (NewGeneris).

BACKGROUND: Tobacco-smoke, airborne, and dietary exposures to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been associated with reduced prenatal growth. Evidence from biomarker-based studies of low-exposed populations is limited. Bulky DNA adducts in cord blood reflect the prenatal effective dose to several genotoxic agents including PAHs. OBJECTIVES: We estimated the association between bulky DNA adduct levels and birth weight in a multicenter study and examined modification of this association by maternal intake of fruits and vegetables during pregnancy. METHODS: Pregnant women from Denmar

Tobacco smoke exposure during pregnancy increases maternal blood lead levels affecting neonate birth weight.

To assess the effect of lead exposure from cigarette smoke on fetal growth, blood lead concentrations were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in 150 healthy pregnant women. Mean lead concentrations in plasma and whole blood were significantly higher in the smoking group compared with the nonsmoking group in each trimester of pregnancy (p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed the highest impact of the number of cigarettes smoked per day for serum lead concentration (β = 0.238; p < 0.05), while in whole blood, it was duration of smoking before conception (β = 0.2
