A prenatal standard for fetal weight improves the prenatal diagnosis of small for gestational age fetuses in pregnancies at increased risk.

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to assess diagnostic accuracy in the prediction of small for gestational age (SGA <10th centile) and fetal growth restricted (FGR) (SGA <3rd centile) fetuses using three different sonographic methods in pregnancies at increased risk of fetal growth restriction: 1) fetal abdominal circumference (AC) z-scores, 2) estimated fetal weight (EFW) z-scores according to postnatal reference standard; 3) EFW z-scores according to a prenatal reference standard. METHODS: Singleton pregnancies at increased risk of fetal growth restriction seen in two university hospitals between 2014

Normative values of renin and aldosterone in clinically stable preterm neonates.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of literature on the normative levels of plasma renin concentration (PRC) and serum aldosterone (SA) in premature neonates. This study aims to provide normative data on PRC and SA levels in preterm neonates in the first 2 weeks after birth and explore associations with maternal, perinatal, or postnatal factors. METHODS: Neonates born at 26- to 34-week gestation were recruited from two neonatal intensive care units in Canada and Australia. The direct renin assay PRC and SA were analyzed on day 1 and days 14-21 after birth to compare across categorical variables a

Markers of Kidney Function in Early Childhood and Association With Maternal Comorbidity.

IMPORTANCE: Kidney functional capacity is low at birth but doubles during the first 2 weeks of life and reaches near-adult levels at age 1 to 2 years. Existing reference intervals for markers of kidney function in newborns are mostly based on preterm newborns, newborns with illness, or small cohorts of term newborns, and the consequences of maternal comorbidities for newborn kidney function are sparsely described. OBJECTIVE: To establish robust reference intervals for creatinine and urea in healthy children in early childhood and to assess whether maternal comorbidity is associated with newbo

Maternal and neonatal risk factors of asthma in children: Nationwide population based study.

BACKGROUND: Small population group-based cohorts have found that perinatal factors may contribute to the development of asthma in children. We aimed to investigate maternal and neonatal risk factors for the asthma phenotypes using two databases from the Taiwan's Maternal and Child Health Database (TMCHD) and the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). METHODS: Perinatal data was obtained from 2004 to 2008 in the TMCHD and linked the NHIRD to obtain relevant medical information regarding maternal and neonatal risk factors of three asthma phenotypes which were identified as transie

Exposure to phthalates in early pregnancy and the risk of fetal growth restriction: a nested case-control study in a Zhuang Chinese population.

Phthalates (PAEs) are common endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that disrupt fetal development. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of single and coexposure to phthalates in early pregnancy on fetal growth restriction (FGR) by a nested case-control study based on the Guangxi Zhuang Birth Cohort (GZBC). Maternal serum concentrations of seven phthalates in 97 neonates with FGR and 291 matched controls were detected through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The associations between phthalates and FGR were analyzed using multiple logistic regression, weight quantile sum

Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors in pregnancy: Systematic review and meta-analysis of maternal and perinatal safety and clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy and safety profile of phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE-5i) in pregnancy are unclear from the few relatively small diverse studies that have used them. OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety profile and clinical outcomes of PDE-5i use in pregnancy. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched Embase, PubMed, CENTRAL, Prospero and Google Scholar to identify randomised controlled trials (RCTs) reporting the use of any PDE-5i in pregnancy up to September 2021. SELECTION CRITERIA: RCTs reporting obstetric or perinatal outcomes or maternal adverse outcomes in women taking PDE5i in pregnancy.

Systemic biomarkers of retinopathy of prematurity in preterm babies.

PURPOSE: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) progression is an inter-play of various perinatal and neonatal angiogenic and inflammatory cytokines. A small subset of ROP progresses to ROP requiring treatment. The present study was conducted with the aim to determine whether levels of IL-6, IL-8 and VEGF in serum and urine at the time of first ROP screening visit could be a biomarker for the prediction of development of treatable ROP. METHOD: Prospective single-center observational study of preterm babies screened for ROP. Blood and urine samples were collected as a part of routine sampling at ini

(Un)warranted variation in local hospital protocols for neonatal referral to the pediatrician: An explorative study in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Studies indicate unwarranted variation in a wide range of neonatal care practices, contributing to preventable morbidity and mortality. Unwarranted variation is the result of complex interactions and multiple determinants. One of the determinants contributing to unwarranted variation in care may be variation in local hospital protocols. The purpose of this study was to examine variation in the content of obstetric and neonatal protocols for six common indications for neonatal referral to the pediatrician: large for gestational age/macrosomia, small for gestational age/fetal growth

Leucine alters blood parameters and regulates hepatic protein synthesis via mammalian/mechanistic target of rapamycin activation in intrauterine growth-restricted piglets.

Neonatal piglets often suffer low birth weights and poor growth performance accompanied by the disruption of protein metabolism, when intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) takes place during pregnancy, leading to a higher mortality and bigger economic loss than expected. Leucine has been proposed to function as a nutritional signal-regulating protein synthesis in numerous studies. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of dietary leucine supplementation on the blood parameters and hepatic protein metabolism in IUGR piglets. Weaned piglets were assigned to one of four treatments in

Longitudinal maternal cardiac function in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Compared with gestational hypertension, preeclampsia has traditionally been considered the worse end of the spectrum of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. It is associated with worse pregnancy outcomes and future cardiovascular morbidities. Both hypertensive disorders may be associated with cardiac maladaptation in pregnancy. However, previous studies were limited by small numbers and a paucity of longitudinal data and unaccounted for the contribution of maternal characteristics that can affect hemodynamics. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess, in an unselected population, the
