Perinatal risk factors for mortality in very preterm infants-A nationwide, population-based discriminant analysis.

AIM: To assess the strength of associations between interrelated perinatal risk factors and mortality in very preterm infants. METHODS: Information on all live-born infants delivered in Sweden at 22-31 weeks of gestational age (GA) from 2011 to 2019 was gathered from the Swedish Neonatal Quality Register, excluding infants with major malformations or not resuscitated because of anticipated poor prognosis. Twenty-seven perinatal risk factors available at birth were exposures and in-hospital mortality outcome. Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis was applied to assess proximit

Adverse birth outcomes in New York City women: Revisiting the Hispanic Paradox.

In the United States, African American or non-Hispanic Black infants experienced worst birth outcomes whereas Hispanic and Asian infants have intermediate or similar outcomes compared with non-Hispanic white infants. The findings of better birth outcomes for Hispanic women have been coined the "Hispanic Paradox" given their low education, income, and access to care. New York City (NYC) has a great racial/ethnic diversity with implications for neighborhood racial/ethnic composition on birth outcomes by protecting women from psychosocial stress via social support that may buffer against racial/e

Fetal growth restriction: associated genetic etiology and pregnancy outcomes in a tertiary referral center.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of fetal growth restriction (FGR) is complex and currently, there is a paucity of research about the genetic etiology of fetal growth restriction. We investigated the genetic associations and pregnancy outcomes in cases of fetal growth restriction. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 210 pregnant women with fetal growth restriction was performed using karyotype analysis and single nucleotide polymorphism arrays (SNP-array). The differences in pathogenic copy number variation (CNV) detected by the two methods were compared. At the same time, the fetuses were divided i

Spatial distribution and secular trend (1991-2014) of small for gestational age infants born in Jujuy.

Introduction. A fetus that does not reach the expected growth potential in utero is considered small for gestational age (SGA). Such restriction depends on genetic and/or environmental factors, being altitude a very relevant factor. This study analyzes the spatial distribution of the prevalence of SGA and its secular trend in Jujuy (1991-2014). Materials and methods. The records of 308 469 live births in Jujuy (Health Statistics and Information Department) were analyzed. The prevalence of SGA (weight/gestational age < P10 and < P3) was estimated for sex according to the INTERGROWTH-21st standa

Dimethylglycine sodium salt activates Nrf2/SIRT1/PGC1α leading to the recovery of muscle stem cell dysfunction in newborns with intrauterine growth restriction.

The objectives of this study were focused on the mechanism of mitochondrial dysfunction in skeletal muscle stem cells (MuSCs) from intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) newborn piglets, and the relief of dimethylglycine sodium salt (DMG-Na) on MuSCs mitochondrial dysfunction by Nrf2/SIRT1/PGC1α network. In this study, six newborn piglets with normal birth weight (NBW) and six IUGR newborn piglets were slaughtered immediately after birth to obtain longissimus dorsi muscle (LM) samples. MuSCs were collected and divided into three groups: MuSCs from NBW newborn piglets (N), MuSCs from IUGR newbo

Can birth weight predict offspring's lung function in adult age? Evidence from two Swedish birth cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Associations between birth weight (BW) and adult lung function have been inconsistent and limited to early adulthood. We aimed to study this association in two population-based cohorts and explore if BW, adjusted for gestational age, predicts adult lung function. We also tested adult lung function impairment according to the mis-match hypothesis-small babies growing big as adults. METHODS: We included 3495 individuals (aged 46.4 ± 5.4 years) from the Malmo Preventive Project (MPP), Sweden, born between 1921 and 1949, and 1401 young to middle-aged individuals (aged 28.6 ± 6.7 years

Is small for gestational age status independently correlated with body composition during childhood?

This study aims to examine if small for gestation age (SGA) status is correlated with alterations in body composition at prepuberty, independently of other factors, comparing SGA-born children with appropriate for gestational age (AGA)-born children. We examined anthropometrics, waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), six skinfold thickness, and body composition using the method of bioelectrical impedance in 636 children aged 7 to 10 years. We also considered age, gender, birth mode, mother's age, prepregnancy weight, weight gain during pregnancy, social status, parental BMI, type of feedi

Interventions for placental insufficiency and fetal growth restriction.

Pregnancy complications adversely impact both mother and/or fetus throughout the lifespan. Fetal growth restriction (FGR) occurs when a fetus fails to reach their intrauterine potential for growth, it is the second highest leading cause of infant mortality, and leads to increased risk of developing non-communicable diseases in later life due 'fetal programming'. Abnormal placental development, growth and/or function underlies approximately 75% of FGR cases and there is currently no treatment save delivery, often prematurely. We previously demonstrated in a murine model of FGR that nanoparticle
