Lactobacillus derived from breast milk facilitates intestinal development in IUGR rats.

AIM: The intestinal microbiota contributes to infant's intestine homeostasis. This study aimed to analyse how probiotics derived from breast milk promote infant intestinal development in rat pups. METHODS AND RESULTS: The effect of potential probiotics derived from breast milk on development of intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) newborn rats' intestine was investigated. Limosilactobacillus oris ML-329 and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei ML-446 exhibited good hydrophobicity percentages (p < 0.05). ML-446 showed a significant effect on intestinal length and weight (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the vi

Metformin in pregnancy and risk of abnormal growth outcomes at birth: a register-based cohort study.

We previously reported an increased risk of being small for gestational age (SGA) and a decreased risk of being large for gestational age (LGA) after in utero exposure to metformin compared with insulin exposure. This follow-up study investigated if these observations remain when metformin exposure (henceforth, metformin cohort) is compared with non-pharmacological antidiabetic treatment of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM; naïve cohort), instead of insulin. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS : This was a Finnish population register-based cohort study from singleton children born during 2004-2016.

Adults Born Small for Gestational Age at Term Have Thinner Peripapillary Retinal Nerve Fiber Layers Than Controls.

PURPOSE: Prenatal growth restriction is associated with impaired neurodevelopment in childhood. This study investigated the effects of being born small for gestational age (SGA) on peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness in adults born at term. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted with a prospective ophthalmologic examination of participants born at full-term (gestational age ≥37 weeks) between 1969 and 2002. All participants were examined with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography and grouped according to their birth weight in correlation to gestationa

Maternal exposure to ambient PM2.5 causes fetal growth restriction via the inhibition of spiral artery remodeling in mice.

BACKGROUND: Maternal exposure to ambient fine particulate matters (PM2.5) is associated with low birth weight (LBW) in offspring, but the underlying biological mechanisms are not yet fully understood. As the bridge that connects mother and fetus, the placenta plays a crucial role in fetal development by providing the fetus with nutrients and oxygen. However, whether PM2.5 exposure would impact the placental development and the related mechanisms are unclear. RESULTS: In the present study, female C57Bl/6j mice were exposed to filtered air (FA) or concentrated ambient PM2.5 (CAP) during pregest

Perinatal outcomes in children born after fresh or frozen embryo transfer using donated oocytes.

STUDY QUESTION: Do children born after vitrified-thawed embryo transfers (ETs) using donated oocytes have worse perinatal outcomes when compared with fresh ET? SUMMARY ANSWER: No significant difference in birthweight and prematurity rates between fresh or frozen embryo transfers (FETs) in newborns after oocyte donation was found. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Autologous singletons born after fresh ET have been previously associated with higher rates of preterm birth and low birthweight, while FETs seem to confer a higher risk of hypertensive disorders during pregnancy and macrosomia. However, studi

Histological remission in inflammatory bowel disease and risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes: A nationwide study.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes, but it is unclear how risks vary by histological activity. METHODS: We performed a nationwide study of Swedish women diagnosed with IBD 1990-2016 and a pre-pregnancy (<12 months) colorectal biopsy with vs. without histological inflammation (1223 and 630 births, respectively). We also examined pregnancy outcomes in 2007-2016 of women with vs. without clinically active IBD (i.e., IBD-related hospitalization, surgery, or medication escalation) <12 months before pregnancy (2110 and 4993 births, respectivel

miR-1227-3p participates in the development of fetal growth restriction via regulating trophoblast cell proliferation and apoptosis.

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a common obstetric disease, which is harmful to the pregnant women and fetuses. It has many influencing factors, but the specific etiology is not clear. MiRNA plays an important role in the fetal growth and development. In this article, we use TaqMan Low-Density Array to screen and analyze the differently expressed miRNAs in FGR-affected placenta (n = 40) and the normal placenta (n = 40). A total of 139 abnormally expressed miRNAs in the FGR-affected placenta were identified, and miR-1227-3p was the most highly downregulated miRNA. Importantly, miR-1227-3p may

Are there sex differences in fetal growth strategies and in the long-term effects of pregnancy complications on cognitive functioning?

Males and females have been proposed to have different prenatal growth strategies, whereby males invest more in fetal growth and less in placental development, leaving them more susceptible to early-life adversity. We tested predictions of this hypothesis using data from the National Collaborative Perinatal Project. Male newborns were heavier than females, but there was no difference in placental weight, adjusting for birthweight. Among infants born prior to 33 weeks, the difference in birthweight between males and females was greater among those who did not survive than among those who did, p

Epigenetic Mechanisms Responsible for the Transgenerational Inheritance of Intrauterine Growth Restriction Phenotypes.

A poorly functioning placenta results in impaired exchanges of oxygen, nutrition, wastes and hormones between the mother and her fetus. This can lead to restriction of fetal growth. These growth restricted babies are at increased risk of developing chronic diseases, such as type-2 diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease, later in life. Animal studies have shown that growth restricted phenotypes are sex-dependent and can be transmitted to subsequent generations through both the paternal and maternal lineages. Altered epigenetic mechanisms, specifically changes in DNA methylation, histone mod

Leveraging Optimized Transcriptomic and Personalized Stem Cell Technologies to Better Understand Syncytialization Defects in Preeclampsia.

Understanding the process of human placentation is important to the development of strategies for treatment of pregnancy complications. Several animal and in vitro human model systems for the general study human placentation have been used. The field has expanded rapidly over the past decades to include stem cell-derived approaches that mimic preclinical placental development, and these stem cell-based models have allowed us to better address the physiology and pathophysiology of normal and compromised trophoblast (TB) sublineage development. The application of transcriptomic approaches to the

Socially Assigned Race and the Health of Racialized Women and Their Infants.

INTRODUCTION: While historically most public health research has relied upon self-identified race as a proxy for experiencing racism, a growing literature recognizes that socially assigned race may more closely align with racialized lived experiences that influence health outcomes. We aim to understand how women's health behaviors, health outcomes, and infant health outcomes differ for women socially assigned as nonwhite when compared with women socially assigned as white in Massachusetts. METHODS: Using data from the Massachusetts Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) Reactions

Decoding placental pathology: Usage of a comprehensive checklist and scoring system for reporting of placentas in the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION/CONTEXT: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are major complications of pregnancy and seen in about 5% to 10% of all pregnancies. Among these, pre-eclampsia is a leading cause of perinatal and fetal morbidity and mortality. It is a multifactorial and multisystemic disorder that results in a variety of histomorphologic features, some of which may be missed if a diligent examination is not performed. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to propose a checklist and novel scoring system to ensure comprehensive placental examination. We also aimed to evaluate the correlat

GCK-MODY in pregnancy: A pregnant woman with diabetes and a small-for-gestational-age fetus.

Glucokinase-maturity-onset diabetes of the young (GCK-MODY) is often misdiagnosed as other forms of diabetes. A 42-year-old pregnant lady with pre-existing diabetes was treated with insulin during first trimester. Fetal growth restriction was noted since mid-second trimester. Genetic testing suggested the diagnosis of GCK-MODY.

Association between paracetamol use during pregnancy and perinatal outcomes: Prospective NISAMI cohort.

BACKGROUND: Paracetamol is widely used to manage fever and pain during pregnancy worldwide. However, paracetamol may affect the pregnant woman and fetus, once this drug crosses the placental barrier after therapeutic doses and may impair fetal liver function, affecting fetus growth and development. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the association between paracetamol use during pregnancy and perinatal outcomes as preterm birth, low birth weight, and small for gestational age. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Data from 760 pregnant women within the NISAMI Cohort between June 2012 and February 2014 we
