Many (> 40%) women discontinue antidepressants during pregnancy because of concerns about effects on the foetus, based on information from inadequately-controlled studies. The sibling-control study design provides the best control for confounding factors, notably maternal depression. The purpose of this review was to investigate the evidence from sibling-control analyses for adverse outcomes in offspring associated with antidepressant exposure during pregnancy. Fourteen sibling-control studies were identified through searches of PubMed and Embase. Outcomes included preterm birth, small for ges

Predicting late-onset foetal growth restriction (FGR) has proven to be rather challenging. In this study, we propose a new parameter, cerebral-placental-uterine (CPU) ratio and umbilico-cerebral (UC) ratio for this matter. Results of this study which included a total of 227 nulliparous women showed that an increase in CPU ratio (OR = 0.45; 95% CI: 0.23-0.88; p=.020) was associated with lower odds of foetal weight above the 10th percentile at birth. CPU ratio measured at 35-37 weeks of gestation had an AUC of 0.78 (95% CI: 0.58, 0.98), sensitivity of 0.62 (95% CI: 0.24, 0.91) and specificity of

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate preterm birth, small-for-gestational age (SGA), preeclampsia and placental abruption in relation to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in offspring.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study among non-malformed live-born singleton children in Sweden born during 2002-2014. Using national registries with recorded information, we followed 1,212,201 children for an ADHD diagnosis from 3 to 15 years. We compared ADHD rates between exposure categories using adjusted hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) from Cox

INTRODUCTION: Total alkaline phosphatase (tALP) levels rise physiologically in maternal serum during pregnancy, and excessively so in certain conditions. However, current reference values are dated, nonlinear, and based on small samples. Factors related to variation in tALP remain unexplained. Thus, our goals in this study were to establish a physiological development curve for tALP within low-risk pregnancies and to evaluate the factors influencing tALP values.
METHODS: This was a single-center, retrospective, observational study. All patients who delivered a live singleton infant at our cen

A 27-year-old patient with a history of severe obstetrical complications and arterial thrombosis received a diagnosis of hereditary thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) due to severe ADAMTS13 deficiency when she presented with an acute episode in the 30th week of her second pregnancy. When the acute episode of hereditary TTP became plasma-refractory and fetal death was imminent, weekly injections of recombinant ADAMTS13 at a dose of 40 U per kilogram of body weight were initiated. The patient's platelet count normalized, and the growth of the fetus stabilized. At 37 weeks 1 day of gestati

Inherited bone marrow failure syndromes (IBMFSs) are a group of disorders typified by impaired production of 1 or several blood cell types. The telomere biology disorders dyskeratosis congenita (DC) and its severe variant, Høyeraal-Hreidarsson (HH) syndrome, are rare IBMFSs characterized by bone marrow failure, developmental defects, and various premature aging complications associated with critically short telomeres. We identified biallelic variants in the gene encoding the 5'-to-3' DNA exonuclease Apollo/SNM1B in 3 unrelated patients presenting with a DC/HH phenotype consisting of early-onse

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) occurs when a fetus is unable to grow normally due to inadequate nutrient and oxygen supply from the placenta. Children born with FGR are at high risk of lifelong adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes, such as cerebral palsy, behavioral issues, and learning and attention difficulties. Unfortunately, there is no treatment to protect the FGR newborn from these adverse neurological outcomes. Chronic inflammation and vascular disruption are prevalent in the brains of FGR neonates and therefore targeted treatments may be key to neuroprotection. Tissue repair and regener

The prevalence of postnatal growth faltering (PGF) in preterm infants with very low birth weight (VLBW) (<1500 g) is a universal problem. Growth improvement is expected as neonatal care is optimized. Objectives: To determine if there has been a decrease in the prevalence of PGF and an improvement in height at 2 years in appropriate for gestational age VLBW children in the last two decades. Methods: Clinical descriptive retrospective analysis of neonatal somatometry at birth and at two-year corrected age in VLBW preterm infants. Small for gestational age were excluded. Two cohorts (2002−2006, n

OBJECTIVE: Female cancer survivors planning to become pregnant are concerned about the impact of cancer treatment on their ability to maintain normal pregnancy and the negative impact on their offspring. However, studies on the pregnancy outcomes of cancer survivors in Japan are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the pregnancy outcomes of female cancer survivors by comparing them with women without a history of malignant tumors in Japan.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 3308 subjects, based on an internet-based questionnaire (self-reported) survey conducted in Jap

Cadmium (Cd) is a major environmental stressor that induces fetal growth restriction (FGR). Also, changes in gut microbiome diversity-which can be modulated positively by melatonin (Mel) have implications on fetal development and placental functions. Therefore, this study aimed to explore whether the role of Mel in counteracting the Cd-induced FGR by regulating placental barrier injury, endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and mitophagy in pregnant mice is mediated-in part- via the gut microbiota modulations. Pregnant mice were intraperitoneally injected with CdCl2 (5 mg/kg) and Mel (5 mg/kg) on

BACKGROUND: In this systematic review, we aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of adding low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) or unfractionated heparin to low-dose aspirin (LDA) started ≤16 weeks'gestation in the prevention of preeclampsia (PE) in high-risk women.
METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases were searched from their inception to April 2022 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that to determine whether the combined treatment of LMWH and LDA is better than single anticoagulant drugs in preventing PE and improving live birth rate of fetus

UNLABELLED: In Sub-Saharan Africa, malaria continues to be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes including stillbirth, early neonatal death, preterm delivery, and low birth weight. Current preventive measures are insufficient and new interventions are urgently needed. However, before such interventions can be tested in pregnant women, background information on pregnancy outcomes in this target population must be collected. We conducted an observational study in Ouélessébougou, Mali, a malaria-endemic area where first antenatal visit commonly occurs during the second trimester of pregnancy

AIM: We examined the associations between preterm birth, poor foetal growth and anxiety disorders among children and adolescents. Additionally, we examined the impact of common comorbidities and specific anxiety disorders separately.
METHODS: Three Finnish registers provided data on a nationwide birth cohort of 22,181 cases with anxiety disorders and 74,726 controls. Conditional logistic regression was used to examine the associations.
RESULTS: Extremely very preterm birth and moderate-late preterm birth were associated with increased adjusted odds ratios (aOR) for anxiety disorders (aOR 1.3

OBJECTIVE: Small for gestational age (SGA) infants are at increased risk for neonatal morbidity and developmental problems in childhood. No current interventions during human pregnancy address this problem. This study investigated the possible relationship between maternal choline concentration during pregnancy and SGA infants.
STUDY DESIGN: Maternal plasma choline concentrations were sampled at 16 and 28 weeks' gestation from women in a public prenatal clinic. Additional factors assessed were maternal age, body mass index, infection, C-reactive protein, hair cortisol, and compliance with pre

Substantial evidence show that intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is linked to both short-term and long-term health consequences. Recent studies have shown that the intrauterine environment harbors a diverse community of microbes. However, the relationship between intrauterine microbiome and IUGR has been rarely studied. In our investigation of 35 neonates with IUGR and 187 neonates without IUGR, we found that the intrauterine microbiome was largely composed of nonpathogenic commensal microbiota from the Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes phyla. Carriage of gener

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of GH treatment on the body composition of children born with SGA.
METHODS: This study is a systematic review of the literature. CINAHL, Embase; Medline/Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science were searched from inception to March 2022.
RESULTS: Four studies met the inclusion criteria, with an intervention time of 1 to 3 years, using doses from 0.03 to 0.07 mg/kg/day of GH. Bone densitometry by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) with whole-body scans was the most used method to assess body composition. Most studies (n = 3) had SGA chil
