BACKGROUND: Hospitalization of a preterm infant in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a significant stressor for mothers, often leading to heightened anxiety that affects both their well-being and maternal-infant interaction. Spiritual self-care is a nonpharmacological approach that can help mothers manage anxiety and cope with their child's hospitalization. This study examines the impact of spiritual self-care education on maternal anxiety in mothers with preterm infants admitted to the NICU.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This quasi-experimental study involved 90 mothers of preterm infants,

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis and postnatal weight and linear growth trajectories to 12 months corrected age, and to assess whether cholestasis mediates the relationship between parenteral nutrition duration and 12-month linear growth in preterm infants.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of a standardized neonatal nutrition and follow-up database including infants born at <32 weeks' gestation. Cholestasis was defined as peak direct bilirubin ≥34.2 μmol/L. Longitudinal weight and length z-scores were analysed using generalized est

OBJECTIVE: An increasing number of women of childbearing age worldwide are using glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) and are advised to use effective contraception during treatment. Nevertheless, maternity services are encountering increasing numbers of women exposed to GLP-1 RAs shortly before conception or during pregnancy. The true extent of exposure is likely underestimated because routine enquiry is not universal. The effects of GLP-1 RA exposure on pregnancy remain poorly understood, and there is currently limited guidance on counselling women with inadvertent periconce

INTRODUCTION: Fetal programming is proposed to induce persistent changes in gene expression, influencing disease susceptibility later in life; however, separating environmental effects from genetic background remains challenging.
METHODS: To investigate genotype-independent effects of fetal growth restriction (FGR), we established human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) from six monozygotic twin pairs with ≥20% birth-weight discordance. The larger twin was appropriate for gestational age (AGA) and the smaller was small for gestational age (SGA). We performed paired trans

During the COVID-19 pandemic, studies showed a significant decrease in fertility rate among Chinese women of reproductive age. The Chinese government implemented the three-child policy in an attempt to change the sustained low birth rate under the dual threat of population development and the pandemic. To separately evaluate the changes in maternal characteristics after the outbreak of the epidemic and the adjustment of fertility policies, as well as the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and adverse neonate outcomes, a retrospective study was conducted at one hospital. We collected da

Jane is a 7-year-old girl who presented for a developmental-behavioral pediatrics (DBP) evaluation because of parental concern about developmental delays and atypical behavior. Jane is a former term infant who was small for gestational age. She experienced some initial feeding difficulties and was discharged home from the nursery at 5 days of age. As a toddler, Jane was mildly delayed in acquiring gross motor developmental milestones, but she was more significantly delayed in acquiring fine motor and adaptive developmental milestones. She began receiving private occupational therapy (OT) servi

INTRODUCTION: Developmental delay is a major pediatric concern, and children born preterm or requiring neonatal intensive care are at particularly increased risk. The Developmental Assessment Scale for Indian Infants (DASII) is a validated tool for evaluating motor and mental development in children up to 30 months of age, but detailed profiles of children referred for suspected developmental delay in Indian clinical settings remain sparse. This study aimed primarily to describe the developmental profile of children referred for developmental assessment using the DASII. As a secondary explorat

BACKGROUND: Perinatal risk factors such as preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction, and low birth weight are linked to elevated cardiovascular and neurodevelopmental risk. Heart rate variability (HRV) is widely used to assess autonomic function in these populations, yet findings remain inconsistent. While autonomic differences during the NICU period are well established, less is known about HRV after hospital discharge across childhood and adulthood.
METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, and APA PsycArticles were searched through April 2025, supplemented by ClinicalTrials.go

BACKGROUND: Public healthcare operates with constrained resources, creating a need to reallocate capacity toward the growing population of pregnant women at high risk for complications. Therefore, a modified antenatal care program with a reduced number of in-person visits supplemented with telemedicine consultations was introduced for low-risk women in Southeast Sweden.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a modified antenatal care program is non-inferior to a standard antenatal care program regarding maternal and neonatal outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: A modified antenatal care program was evaluated at

INTRODUCTION: Women with pregestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM) are at increased risk of preeclampsia (PE) and are commonly prescribed aspirin prophylaxis based on clinical risk factors alone. First-trimester screening algorithms may allow a more individualized allocation of aspirin. We aimed to compare the association between three first-trimester aspirin allocation strategies and the incidence of preterm PE in women with PGDM in routine clinical practice.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective multicenter observational cohort study included 519 singleton pregnancies with PGDM managed at

INTRODUCTION: Propionic aciduria (PA) and methylmalonic aciduria (MMA) are rare inherited metabolic disorders marked by recurrent metabolic decompensation and hyperammonaemia, resulting in neurological morbidity, chronic complications, and substantial healthcare burden. Although carglumic acid (Carbaglu®) is established for acute hyperammonaemic crises, evidence for its long-term use is limited. This study reports the 18-month interim analysis of PROTECT, a large prospective observational study evaluating chronic Carbaglu® therapy in PA and MMA.
METHODS: PROTECT is a prospective, longitudinal

Preterm birth (<37 completed gestational weeks), low birth weight (<2500g) and small for gestational age (SGA, birth weight <10th percentile for gestational age) are interrelated neonatal phenotypes that adversely affect lifelong kidney health. They have been grouped under the term small vulnerable newborn (SVN). Being born as SVN ranks fifth among risk factors for early mortality and imposes a lifelong susceptibility for chronic kidney disease (CKD). The combination of extreme prematurity and SGA triples CKD-risk in early adulthood. Globally, around 35 million SVN are born annually and will c

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia with severe features (PEC-SF) is a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy associated with significant maternal and perinatal morbidity. It is defined by heterogenous criteria, including severe hypertension and signs of end-organ dysfunction. Whether individual criteria confer differential risk for adverse perinatal outcomes remains unclear. This gap limits clinicians' ability to risk stratify patients, guide management decisions, and provide individualized counseling regarding prognosis.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association between individual diagnostic criteria in pree

OBJECTIVE: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) colonization during pregnancy is associated with adverse outcomes. The associations between GBS colonization status and clinical parameters measured at different antenatal time points, and whether these differ by maternal age, remain unclear. This study aimed to explore age-stratified associations between GBS colonization and clinical parameters.
METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted at a single center. Cases were GBS-positive women (n = 110), and controls were GBS-negative women (n = 155) selected from the same cohort and matched on

Prenatal testosterone (T) excess programs sex-specific cardiovascular dysfunction in sheep offspring. Given the close reciprocal relationship between the cardiopulmonary system, we hypothesized that prenatal T excess would also adversely program the offspring's pulmonary system in a sex-specific manner from fetal life into adulthood. Pregnant ewes received intramuscular injections of T propionate (100 mg) or a vehicle control (C) twice weekly from gestational days (GD) 30-90 (term 147 days). Offspring lungs were collected at GD120 (n=6-7 per group), and at 24 months of age (n=4-6 per group) fo
