Recent minimum wage policy and its impacts on birth outcomes.

After a pause in statutory minimum wage increases during the Great Recession, several states increased their minimum wages, including increases as large as 60% over just a few years. Using a triple difference-in-differences framework and data on the universe of births from 2010 to 2019, this study investigates how recent minimum wage hikes affected birth outcomes. We first document sizeable negative impacts of minimum wage policy on the labor supply and economic well-being of females aged 16-44. We then document small adverse effects on birth outcomes, estimating that minimum wage increases le

Age-Adjusted Cerebellar Volumetry and Developmental Outcomes in Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants.

BACKGROUND: Infants with extremely low birth weight (ELBW) are at high risk for neurodevelopmental impairment, but the relationship between cerebellar structure and later developmental outcome remains incompletely defined. METHODS: In this retrospective single-center study, we examined total cerebellar volume on clinically acquired brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in ELBW infants while accounting for postmenstrual age (PMA) at imaging. RESULTS: Of 65 infants screened, 42 were included. Mean gestational age at birth was 25.54 ± 1.68 weeks, mean birth weight was 733.2 ± 118.7 g, and mean

Iodine exposure and thyroid function after prophylactic intragastric iodinated contrast administration for meconium obstruction of prematurity in extremely low birth weight infants.

OBJECTIVES: Maternal hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) increase the risk of meconium obstruction of prematurity in small-for-gestational-age (SGA) extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants. While prophylactic intragastric amidotrizoate (Gastrografin®) promotes meconium excretion, concerns persist regarding iodine load and thyroid dysfunction. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed infants (<30 weeks, <700 g) born 2016-2024. The treated group (n=20) comprised SGA infants of mothers with HDP receiving prophylactic 5-fold diluted Gastrografin (iodine: 148-222 mg/kg) after stabilization. Co

Gestational Age and Birth Weight as Predictors of NICU Admission Probability and Length of Stay in a Jordanian Neonatal Cohort.

Background Predicting the length of stay (LOS) in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is crucial for resource allocation and clinical management. Objective This study aimed to develop and validate a simple, practical predictive model using gestational age (GA) and birth body weight (BBW) in a Jordanian cohort. Methods This retrospective study analyzed 218 neonates admitted to the NICU between January 2022 and December 2023. Binary logistic regression was employed to predict prolonged LOS (≥7 days), multiple linear regression to estimate actual LOS, Cox proportional hazards regression to mo

Effects of nutritional low phosphorus status caused by extremely low phosphorus diet during lactation and early childhood on endochondral ossification in offspring rats.

BACKGROUND: Fetal phosphorus is mainly deposited in bones in late pregnancy. Premature birth interrupts the supply of maternal phosphorus, combined with insufficient reserves, immature intestinal absorption and catch-up growth, the demand for mineralization surges, breast milk is difficult to meet, and it is easy to cause low-phosphorus bone disease; as the survival rate of premature infants increases, the incidence also increases. OBJECTIVE: The core of the DOHaD theory is that the early living environment permanently reshapes the body through epigenetic mechanisms, thereby affecting long-te

Detection of serotonin and serotonin-related genes reveals unique roles in human intestinal epithelial development.

Although 95% of serotonin in the human body is produced in the gastrointestinal tract, most prior research work has focused on the brain. Despite its abundance in the gut, serotonin's role in early intestinal development remains poorly understood. Here we show that serotonin is detected in both the small intestine and large intestine as early as 14 to 15 weeks gestational age. Using single-cell transcriptomics with histological validation, we generated a spatiotemporal atlas of serotonin and serotonin-related genes in the human gut from first trimester to late adulthood. The serotonin synthesi

Health behavior profiles in early pregnancy are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and maternal blood pressure 2-7 years after delivery.

BACKGROUND: The joint effects of individual health behaviors on pregnancy health are rarely considered. We examined associations between combinations of first trimester health behaviors with adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) and blood pressure (BP) 2-7 years after delivery, and estimated the proportion of associations with later BP mediated by APOs. METHODS: Participants in the nuMoM2b Heart Health Study prospective cohort were included. Physical activity, diet, sleep duration, and smoking were scored using the Life's Essential 8 framework. APOs included hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, p

Clinical Characteristics Associated with Fetomaternal Hemorrhage: A Retrospective Multicenter Descriptive Study (2009-2026).

Fetomaternal hemorrhage refers to the transfer of fetal erythrocytes into the maternal circulation. Although clinically significant fetomaternal hemorrhage is rare, it can result in severe fetal anemia with substantial morbidity and mortality. Early recognition remains challenging due to a nonspecific clinical presentation. This study aimed to identify maternal and obstetric characteristics associated with fetomaternal hemorrhage that may serve as early clinical warning signs. In this retrospective multicenter descriptive study, singleton pregnancies with a positive Kleihauer-Betke test from f

An ESIPT-based ratiometric fluorescent probe for cysteine and its application in complex matrices: milk and fetal bovine serum.

Cysteine (Cys) was an essential biothiol whose dysregulation is linked to neurotoxicity, liver injury, childhood growth retardation, and cardiovascular diseases, making its accurate detection critical for clinical diagnosis and biochemical research. Although excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT)-based fluorescent probes offer advantages such as a large Stokes shift and low background interference, conventional ESIPT probes struggled to distinguish Cys from structurally similar homocysteine (Hcy) and glutathione (GSH). Herein, we rationally designed a novel ESIPT probe named LYB-

Splanchnic oxygen saturation is not associated with early growth in very preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is associated with poorer growth, possibly due to postnatal conditions that disrupt nutritional status. Previous studies found an association between low regional splanchnic oxygen saturation (rsSO2) and feeding intolerance (FI). We hypothesized that low rsSO2 is associated with poorer growth because of FI and associated impaired digestion and absorption. METHODS: We included infants with gestational age (GA) < 32 weeks and/or birth weight < 1.2 kilograms (kg). We excluded infants with chromosomal or congenital abnormalities, gastrointestinal diseases, and those who

Placental TRPV2 supports trophoblast function and normal fetal development.

While placental functioning arbitrates fetal outcome, the molecular players that underpin normal placental development remain poorly understood. Here, we provide evidence that the Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 2 (TRPV2) channel plays an important role in normal placental development, determining fetal size and survival. Its absence severely affects placental morphology, causing fetal growth restriction and embryonic lethality, which was found to be allocated to a non-redundant role in the trophoblast, but not in the embryo. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated Trpv2 deletion in mouse trophoblast stem
