Earlier bedtime at 1.5 years is associated with greater height gain at 3 years of age: a nationwide birth cohort study of the Japan environment and children's study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown inconsistent associations between sleep duration and height gain in early childhood. The relationships of bedtime and nighttime awakenings with growth remain unclear. We investigated whether sleep characteristics at 1.5 years were associated with subsequent height gain. METHODS: Forty-nine thousand two hundred eight singleton, term toddlers classified as appropriate for gestational age were selected from the Japan Environment and Children's Study. Nighttime sleep was defined as sleep between 20:00 and 07:59. Nighttime sleep duration, bedtime, and nightt

Prenatal Detection of HSPG2-Related Dyssegmental Dysplasia, Silverman-Handmaker Type: A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: HSPG2-related dyssegmental dysplasia (heparan sulfate proteoglycan 2) is an extremely rare and severe autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia. The low incidence and the overlapping features with other types of lethal skeletal dysplasia represent the main challenges in diagnosis. Early diagnosis is essential and can be achieved by ultrasound examination and genetic analysis. This report describes a case of HSPG2-related dyssegmental dysplasia, Silverman-Handmaker type (DDSH) diagnosed prenatally through a combination of detailed ultrasound imaging and subsequent genetic analysis.

Characterization of Nutritional Intake in Vegan Pregnant Women and its Association on Birth Weight.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Evidence regarding the nutritional characteristics of strictly vegan diets during pregnancy and their potential associations with fetal growth remains limited. We aimed to characterize nutrient intake among vegan pregnant women and to examine dietary factors associated with neonatal birth weight and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) birth. METHODS: This secondary analysis of a prospective observational study included women with singleton pregnancies who delivered at a single medical center and adhered to a consistent diet. Participants were classified as vegan or non-vegan an

Untargeted Lipidomics Analysis of Prenatal Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Exposure and Small-for-Gestational Age (SGA) Delivery: An Exploratory Study in the Atlanta African American Maternal-Child Cohort, 2014-2020.

Prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is associated with small-for-gestational age (SGA), an adverse pregnancy outcome indicative of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Evidence from previous environmental epidemiologic work suggests that lipids contribute to this association through oxidative stress and inflammation. Therefore, we conducted an exploratory study by analyzing the maternal lipidome with the meet-in-the-middle approach to identify potential intermediates. In the Atlanta African American Maternal-Child Cohort, pregnant participants provided serum samp

Maternal folate receptor alpha autoantibodies and folate levels during pregnancy in relation to autism spectrum disorder: a pilot case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Folate receptor alpha autoantibodies (FRAA) are reported to be associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and are found more frequently in mothers of children with ASD. However, the relationship between maternal FRAA during pregnancy, folate status, and ASD risk in offspring remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: In this exploratory pilot study, we compared maternal serum binding FRAA measured during pregnancy between high-folate ASD cases and childbirth-time-matched mothers of typically developing children. METHODS: FRAA were retrospectively analyzed in serum samples collected between

Insufficient Implementation of Recommendations in Pregnancies after Bariatric Surgery: Results from a Nationwide Real-World Study in Germany (PABS Study).

Introduction Bariatric metabolic surgery (MBS) is increasingly performed in women of reproductive age. Although MBS reduces obesity-related pregnancy complications, altered metabolism and nutritional deficiencies may adversely affect maternal and neonatal outcomes. This study evaluated (1) adherence to current guideline recommendations and (2) pregnancy outcomes in women after MBS in Germany. Materials and Methods In this multicenter cohort study, 410 pregnancies after MBS were collected between 2023 - 2025; 380 cases with complete data on BMI, MBS type, and birth weight were finally analyzed.

Spatio-temporal expression of E-cadherin mediates trophoblast lineage transitions during human placentation.

Human placentation relies on the precise differentiation of embryo-derived trophoblasts into specialized lineages, a process strictly regulated by the spatio-temporal expression of key genes. Herein, we report that the expression of the transmembrane glycoprotein, known as E-cadherin, fluctuates dynamically across distinct trophoblast subpopulations rather than acting as a static structural tether. Along the villous pathway, E-cadherin expression initially increases to facilitate the aggregation of cytotrophoblast cells (CTs) and is subsequently downregulated via transcriptional repression, en

Predictors for intrapartum cesarean delivery after labor induction for suspected fetal growth restriction at term.

OBJECTIVE: In term pregnancies with suspected fetal growth restriction (FGR) undergoing induction of labor (IOL), predictors for intrapartum cesarean delivery (CD) remain unclear. We aimed to determine predictors for intrapartum CD in this population. METHODS: This study included a retrospective cohort of singleton pregnancies undergoing IOL at ≥37 weeks for suspected FGR, defined as estimated fetal weight (EFW) or abdominal circumference (AC) <10th percentile, at a tertiary medical center (2011-2019). Maternal characteristics, sonographic measurements, and Doppler parameters were compared be

Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists in Pregnancy: Periconception Exposure and Perinatal Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: An increasing number of women of childbearing age worldwide are using glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) and are advised to use effective contraception during treatment. Nevertheless, maternity services are encountering increasing numbers of women exposed to GLP-1 RAs shortly before conception or during pregnancy. The true extent of exposure is likely underestimated because routine enquiry is not universal. The effects of GLP-1 RA exposure on pregnancy remain poorly understood, and there is currently limited guidance on counselling women with inadvertent periconce

Fetal environment associated with small for gestational age birth transcriptionally primes umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells toward osteogenic pathways with potentially impaired adipogenic differentiation.

INTRODUCTION: Fetal programming is proposed to induce persistent changes in gene expression, influencing disease susceptibility later in life; however, separating environmental effects from genetic background remains challenging. METHODS: To investigate genotype-independent effects of fetal growth restriction (FGR), we established human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) from six monozygotic twin pairs with ≥20% birth-weight discordance. The larger twin was appropriate for gestational age (AGA) and the smaller was small for gestational age (SGA). We performed paired trans

Maternal Characteristics and Adverse Neonatal Outcomes During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Maternal Characteristics During the Three-Child Policy: A Retrospective Analysis.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, studies showed a significant decrease in fertility rate among Chinese women of reproductive age. The Chinese government implemented the three-child policy in an attempt to change the sustained low birth rate under the dual threat of population development and the pandemic. To separately evaluate the changes in maternal characteristics after the outbreak of the epidemic and the adjustment of fertility policies, as well as the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and adverse neonate outcomes, a retrospective study was conducted at one hospital. We collected da

Etiological Diagnoses Versus Descriptive Developmental Diagnoses.

Jane is a 7-year-old girl who presented for a developmental-behavioral pediatrics (DBP) evaluation because of parental concern about developmental delays and atypical behavior. Jane is a former term infant who was small for gestational age. She experienced some initial feeding difficulties and was discharged home from the nursery at 5 days of age. As a toddler, Jane was mildly delayed in acquiring gross motor developmental milestones, but she was more significantly delayed in acquiring fine motor and adaptive developmental milestones. She began receiving private occupational therapy (OT) servi

Developmental Profile of Children Referred for Developmental Assessment Using the Developmental Assessment Scale for Indian Infants (DASII): A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Developmental delay is a major pediatric concern, and children born preterm or requiring neonatal intensive care are at particularly increased risk. The Developmental Assessment Scale for Indian Infants (DASII) is a validated tool for evaluating motor and mental development in children up to 30 months of age, but detailed profiles of children referred for suspected developmental delay in Indian clinical settings remain sparse. This study aimed primarily to describe the developmental profile of children referred for developmental assessment using the DASII. As a secondary explorat

Heart rate variability after hospital discharge in perinatal risk populations: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal risk factors such as preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction, and low birth weight are linked to elevated cardiovascular and neurodevelopmental risk. Heart rate variability (HRV) is widely used to assess autonomic function in these populations, yet findings remain inconsistent. While autonomic differences during the NICU period are well established, less is known about HRV after hospital discharge across childhood and adulthood. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, and APA PsycArticles were searched through April 2025, supplemented by ClinicalTrials.go
