Long-Acting PEG-rhGH in Short Children Born SGA in China: 4-Year Results from a Randomized Phase 2 Study.

Introduction Children born small for gestational age (SGA) who failed to achieve catch-up growth are at risk of persistent short stature and associated metabolic complications. Daily recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) therapy improves growth but is limited by adherence challenges. This study evaluated the long-term efficacy and safety of once-weekly PEGylated recombinant human growth hormone (PEG-rhGH; Jintrolong) in short children born SGA. Methods This multicenter, randomized, open-label, dose-response phase 2 study, comprised a 52-week main phase and an ongoing extension (NCT02375620),

Prenatal Detection of HSPG2-Related Dyssegmental Dysplasia, Silverman-Handmaker Type: A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: HSPG2-related dyssegmental dysplasia (heparan sulfate proteoglycan 2) is an extremely rare and severe autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia. The low incidence and the overlapping features with other types of lethal skeletal dysplasia represent the main challenges in diagnosis. Early diagnosis is essential and can be achieved by ultrasound examination and genetic analysis. This report describes a case of HSPG2-related dyssegmental dysplasia, Silverman-Handmaker type (DDSH) diagnosed prenatally through a combination of detailed ultrasound imaging and subsequent genetic analysis.

Characterization of Nutritional Intake in Vegan Pregnant Women and its Association on Birth Weight.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Evidence regarding the nutritional characteristics of strictly vegan diets during pregnancy and their potential associations with fetal growth remains limited. We aimed to characterize nutrient intake among vegan pregnant women and to examine dietary factors associated with neonatal birth weight and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) birth. METHODS: This secondary analysis of a prospective observational study included women with singleton pregnancies who delivered at a single medical center and adhered to a consistent diet. Participants were classified as vegan or non-vegan an

Untargeted Lipidomics Analysis of Prenatal Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Exposure and Small-for-Gestational Age (SGA) Delivery: An Exploratory Study in the Atlanta African American Maternal-Child Cohort, 2014-2020.

Prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is associated with small-for-gestational age (SGA), an adverse pregnancy outcome indicative of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Evidence from previous environmental epidemiologic work suggests that lipids contribute to this association through oxidative stress and inflammation. Therefore, we conducted an exploratory study by analyzing the maternal lipidome with the meet-in-the-middle approach to identify potential intermediates. In the Atlanta African American Maternal-Child Cohort, pregnant participants provided serum samp

Fetal environment associated with small for gestational age birth transcriptionally primes umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells toward osteogenic pathways with potentially impaired adipogenic differentiation.

INTRODUCTION: Fetal programming is proposed to induce persistent changes in gene expression, influencing disease susceptibility later in life; however, separating environmental effects from genetic background remains challenging. METHODS: To investigate genotype-independent effects of fetal growth restriction (FGR), we established human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) from six monozygotic twin pairs with ≥20% birth-weight discordance. The larger twin was appropriate for gestational age (AGA) and the smaller was small for gestational age (SGA). We performed paired trans

Maternal Characteristics and Adverse Neonatal Outcomes During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Maternal Characteristics During the Three-Child Policy: A Retrospective Analysis.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, studies showed a significant decrease in fertility rate among Chinese women of reproductive age. The Chinese government implemented the three-child policy in an attempt to change the sustained low birth rate under the dual threat of population development and the pandemic. To separately evaluate the changes in maternal characteristics after the outbreak of the epidemic and the adjustment of fertility policies, as well as the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and adverse neonate outcomes, a retrospective study was conducted at one hospital. We collected da

Etiological Diagnoses Versus Descriptive Developmental Diagnoses.

Jane is a 7-year-old girl who presented for a developmental-behavioral pediatrics (DBP) evaluation because of parental concern about developmental delays and atypical behavior. Jane is a former term infant who was small for gestational age. She experienced some initial feeding difficulties and was discharged home from the nursery at 5 days of age. As a toddler, Jane was mildly delayed in acquiring gross motor developmental milestones, but she was more significantly delayed in acquiring fine motor and adaptive developmental milestones. She began receiving private occupational therapy (OT) servi

Heart rate variability after hospital discharge in perinatal risk populations: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal risk factors such as preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction, and low birth weight are linked to elevated cardiovascular and neurodevelopmental risk. Heart rate variability (HRV) is widely used to assess autonomic function in these populations, yet findings remain inconsistent. While autonomic differences during the NICU period are well established, less is known about HRV after hospital discharge across childhood and adulthood. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, and APA PsycArticles were searched through April 2025, supplemented by ClinicalTrials.go

Maternal and neonatal outcomes in a reduced visit antenatal care program for women at low risk for complications.

BACKGROUND: Public healthcare operates with constrained resources, creating a need to reallocate capacity toward the growing population of pregnant women at high risk for complications. Therefore, a modified antenatal care program with a reduced number of in-person visits supplemented with telemedicine consultations was introduced for low-risk women in Southeast Sweden. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a modified antenatal care program is non-inferior to a standard antenatal care program regarding maternal and neonatal outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: A modified antenatal care program was evaluated at

First-trimester aspirin allocation strategies and preterm preeclampsia in women with pregestational diabetes: A national multicenter observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Women with pregestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM) are at increased risk of preeclampsia (PE) and are commonly prescribed aspirin prophylaxis based on clinical risk factors alone. First-trimester screening algorithms may allow a more individualized allocation of aspirin. We aimed to compare the association between three first-trimester aspirin allocation strategies and the incidence of preterm PE in women with PGDM in routine clinical practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective multicenter observational cohort study included 519 singleton pregnancies with PGDM managed at

A comparative analysis of treatment responses across three etiologies of short stature.

PURPOSE: While recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) therapy improves growth velocity in pediatric patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), a comparative analysis across different etiologies of short stature may further elucidate variations in the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis response. METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study included 86 children with short stature (height SDS < -2): 15 with stage 3-5 CKD, 20 born small for gestational age (SGA), and 51 with idiopathic growth hormone deficiency (IGHD). All patients received rhGH therapy (0.05 mg/kg/day) for 12 months

From prematurity and low birth weight to CKD: opportunities for intervention.

Preterm birth (<37 completed gestational weeks), low birth weight (<2500g) and small for gestational age (SGA, birth weight <10th percentile for gestational age) are interrelated neonatal phenotypes that adversely affect lifelong kidney health. They have been grouped under the term small vulnerable newborn (SVN). Being born as SVN ranks fifth among risk factors for early mortality and imposes a lifelong susceptibility for chronic kidney disease (CKD). The combination of extreme prematurity and SGA triples CKD-risk in early adulthood. Globally, around 35 million SVN are born annually and will c

Association between diagnostic criteria of preeclampsia with severe features and adverse perinatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia with severe features (PEC-SF) is a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy associated with significant maternal and perinatal morbidity. It is defined by heterogenous criteria, including severe hypertension and signs of end-organ dysfunction. Whether individual criteria confer differential risk for adverse perinatal outcomes remains unclear. This gap limits clinicians' ability to risk stratify patients, guide management decisions, and provide individualized counseling regarding prognosis. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association between individual diagnostic criteria in pree

Neonatal Gastric Perforation Temporally Associated with Nasogastric Tube Insertion: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal gastric perforation (NGP) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Approximately half of reported cases are idiopathic or spontaneous, while the remainder are attributed to identifiable causes, including congenital gastric wall defects, hypoxic-ischemic injury, and iatrogenic trauma related to nasogastric tube (NGT) insertion, particularly in premature and low-birth-weight infants. Early diagnosis and prompt surgical intervention are critical for improving outcomes. We report a case of gastric perforation tem

Real-world patterns of growth hormone treatment in Japanese children with short stature associated with small for gestational age, Turner syndrome, Noonan syndrome, achondroplasia, and hypochondroplasia: a retrospective database study.

In Japan, GH treatment (GHT) is used for short stature associated with small for gestational age (SGA), Noonan syndrome (NS), Turner syndrome (TS), achondroplasia (ACH), and hypochondroplasia (HCH). However, real-world data on these diagnoses and GHT use for these conditions in Japan remain limited. In this retrospective cohort study, we used the JMDC claims database (2005-2021) to extract data of children with SGA-related short stature or diagnosed with short stature diseases, namely NS, TS, ACH, or HCH, particularly in boys aged <17 years and girls aged <15 years. We reported the prevalence,
