The Tubular Damage Markers: Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin and Kidney Injury Molecule-1 in Newborns with Intrauterine Growth Restriction.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a poorly understood complication of pregnancy. It may be associated with various diseases in adulthood, such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, and end-stage renal disease. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to check whether IUGR affects the function of renal tubules, as assessed by the tubular damage markers neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM-1). METHODS: The study included 126 term neonates. Thirty-eight newborns were the result of pregnancies complicated by I

Morphological Survey of Placenta in Trombophilia Related Hypoperfusion of Maternal-Fetal Blood Flow.

Complex and modern obstetric medical care provides a constant improvement for the pregnancy prognosis. Thus, young women with an undiagnosed pathology become pregnant and, during pregnancy, the previously undiagnosed pathology, without any clinical signs and symptoms, becomes present during pregnancy, having an unfavorable impact on the fetus and the health state of the pregnant woman. The gestational syndromes during pregnancy influence the woman's health state over a long period of time and the quality of the conception product. The recommendation, performance of laboratory tests and imagist

Pregnancy outcome in mothers over the age of 35.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The proportion of pregnancies occurring in women of at least 35 years of age has increased from 6.2% in 1980 to 22.3% of births in 2016. This review summarizes recent epidemiological and basic scientific studies investigating the association between older maternal age and adverse pregnancy outcome(s), and clinical studies which investigate the effects of intervention to reduce adverse events. RECENT FINDINGS: Women of at least 35 years of age have increased risk of maternal and foetal complications in pregnancy including: stillbirth, a small for gestational age baby, preter

Placental transcriptional and histologic subtypes of normotensive fetal growth restriction are comparable to preeclampsia.

BACKGROUND: Infants born small for gestational age because of pathologic placenta-mediated fetal growth restriction can be difficult to distinguish from those who are constitutionally small. Additionally, even among fetal growth-restricted pregnancies with evident placental disease, considerable heterogeneity in clinical outcomes and long-term consequences has been observed. Gene expression studies of fetal growth-restricted placentas also have limited consistency in their findings, which is likely due to the presence of different molecular subtypes of disease. In our previous study on preecla

Birth prevalence of hypospadias and hypospadias risk factors in newborn males in the United States from 1997 to 2012.

BACKGROUND: Hypospadias is a common genitourinary malformation and there are conflicting data on whether its prevalence is increasing. Previous studies have described associations with risk factors including small for gestational age (SGA), multiple gestation birth, environmental influences, and maternal factors. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine birth prevalence of hypospadias and hypospadias risk factors in a large national dataset and to evaluate for changes from 1997 to 2012. We hypothesized that any increase in the birth prevalence of hypospadias would be associated w

Association between delivery of small-for-gestational age neonate and long-term pediatric ophthalmic morbidity.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether delivery of small for gestational age (SGA) neonate poses a risk for subsequent long-term ophthalmic morbidity. METHODS: In this population-based study, all deliveries between 1991 and 2014 were included. Congenital malformations and multiple gestations were excluded from the analysis. Offspring were defined as either SGA (weight below the 5th percentile for gestational age) or non-SGA. Comparison was performed regarding the incidence of long-term ophthalmic morbidity in a cohort of neonates who were born SGA and those who were not. Ophthalmic morbidity was d

The role of placental malperfusion in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia in dichorionic twin and singleton pregnancies.

INTRODUCTION: In singletons, the pathogenesis of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) is attributed to abnormal placentation, characterized by maternal vascular malperfusion (MVM) lesions. Whether MVM plays a similar role in twin pregnancies is unclear. The purpose of the study was to compared placental pathology findings between dichorionic-twin and singleton pregnancies complicated by HDP. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of women with dichorionic-twin or singleton pregnancies complicated by HDP who gave birth in a single tertiary center between 2001 and 2015. Placental abnormalitie

The effect of Ramadan fasting during pregnancy on perinatal outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although exempt, many pregnant Muslim women partake in the daily fast during daylight hours during the month of Ramadan. In other contexts an impoverished diet during pregnancy impacts on birth weight. The aim of this systematic review was to determine whether Ramadan fasting by pregnant women affects perinatal outcomes. Primary outcomes investigated were perinatal mortality, preterm birth and small for gestational age (SGA) infants. Secondary outcomes investigated were stillbirth, neonatal death, maternal death, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes, congenital

Defining early vs late fetal growth restriction by placental pathology.

INTRODUCTION: Although early and late fetal growth restriction have been suggested to be distinct entities, the optimal gestational age cut-off that differentiates the two conditions is currently unclear and has been arbitrarily set in previous studies between 32 and 37 weeks. We aimed to use placental pathology findings to determine that optimal gestational age cut-off between early and late fetal growth restriction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of all women with singleton gestation who gave birth to a neonate diagnosed as small-for-gestational age (small-for-gestationa

MIRAGE syndrome is a rare cause of 46,XY DSD born SGA without adrenal insufficiency.

BACKGROUND: MIRAGE syndrome, a congenital multisystem disorder due to pathogenic SAMD9 variants, describes a constellation of clinical features including 46,XY disorders of sex development (DSD), small for gestational age (SGA) and adrenal insufficiency (AI). It is poorly understood whether SAMD9 variants underlie 46,XY DSD patients born SGA (46,XY DSD SGA) without AI. This study aimed to define the frequency and phenotype of SAMD9 variants in 46,XY DSD SGA without AI. METHODS: Forty-nine Japanese patients with 46,XY DSD SGA (Quigley scale, 2 to 6; gestational age-matched birth weight percent

Persistent amnion-chorion membrane separation.

AIM: Fetal membranes are composed of the amnion and chorion, which fuse during the early second trimester. Persistent separation confers increased risk of adverse perinatal outcomes. This study characterizes sonographic and placental findings associated with persistent amnion-chorion (AC) membrane separation. METHODS: This is a case series of 23 patients carrying singleton pregnancies with persistent AC membrane separation after 16 weeks' gestation diagnosed by ultrasound from 2010 to 2016 at our institution. Twenty placentas were available for analysis. RESULTS: Obstetrical complications oc

Gonadal function and pubertal development in patients with Silver-Russell syndrome.

STUDY QUESTION: Is gonadal function affected in males and females with Silver-Russell Syndrome (SRS)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Sertoli cell dysfunction is more common in males with SRS, with 11p15 LOM, but gonadal function seems to be unaffected in females with SRS. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Males with SRS have an increased risk for genital abnormalities such as cryptorchidism and hypospadias, which could be associated with reproductive problems in later life. In SRS females, an association has been described with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome, which might compromise their reproductive functio

Metabolomics for predicting fetal growth restriction: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a relevant research and clinical concern since it is related to higher risks of adverse outcomes at any period of life. Current predictive tools in pregnancy (clinical factors, ultrasound scan, placenta-related biomarkers) fail to identify the true growth-restricted fetus. However, technologies based on metabolomics have generated interesting findings and seem promising. In this systematic review, we will address diagnostic accuracy of metabolomics analyses in predicting FGR. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Our primary outcome is small for gestational age
