INTRODUCTION: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) affects cardiac function and increases the risk of cardiac pathologies. We describe the relationship between cardiac contractility and cardiac size and shape in FGR and small for gestational age (SGA) fetuses to determine if ultrasound measurements can indicate functional cardiac sequelae.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study included fetuses with gestational ages of 23.0-39.0 weeks (FGR: n = 55, SGA: n = 40, appropriate for gestational age/AGA: n = 22). FGR was defined as fetuses with EFW <10th centile and abnormal arterial Doppler studies; SGA

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relationship between umbilical and renal artery Doppler indices in fetuses with growth restriction (FGR) and to examine their association with amniotic fluid index (AFI), early- and late-onset subtypes, and perinatal outcomes.
METHODS: This prospective observational study included 151 singleton FGR pregnancies between 24 and 37 weeks of gestation. Doppler measurements of the umbilical, middle cerebral, ductus venosus, and renal arteries were performed by a single perinatologist. Fetuses were classified into four groups according to umbilical artery (UA) flow patter

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a severe pregnancy complication often caused by placental insufficiency. Proper trophoblast invasion is essential for placental development and function, ensuring adequate nutrient and oxygen supply to the developing fetus. Dysregulation impairs placental perfusion, leading to FGR. This study uses a calorie-restricted mouse model to investigate genes/molecular mechanisms regulating trophoblast invasion across gestational timepoints. Pregnant mice received either a standard or 50 % calorie-restricted diet from E8.5. Placentas and invasion sites were analyzed at

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate placental function using IVIM diffusion-weighted MRI in both normal pregnancies and gestational hypertension, and develop a combined predictive model for severe fetal growth restriction (sFGR).
METHOD: We studied 32 healthy pregnant women and 40 with gestational hypertension (20 with sFGR, 20 without). Five IVIM-based parameters were calculated: perfusion fraction (f), true diffusion coefficient (D), pseudo-diffusion coefficient (D∗), diffusion distribution coefficient (DDC), and superdiffusion index (γ). These parameters were compared between the groups. Pr

Abnormal placental angiogenesis contributes significantly to fetal growth restriction (FGR) and related complications. Methionine adenosyl-transferase 2A (MAT2A) can regulate the process of embryonic development; however, the role of MAT2A in placental angiogenesis during fetal development remains poorly understood. In this study, placentas from paired normal birth weight (NBW) and FGR piglets were used to quantify placental vascular density and biochemical indexes, while porcine trophoblast cells (pTrs) and porcine vascular endothelial cells (PVECs) were used to investigate the regulatory mec

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) comprise a continuum of neurodevelopmental and physical disabilities resulting from the teratogenic effects of prenatal alcohol exposure. FASD is recognized as the leading cause of preventable developmental disabilities worldwide. Recent U.S. school-based studies estimate its prevalence at 11.3-50.0 per 1000 children (approximately 1-5 %), with rates in certain high-risk populations reaching up to 169 per 1000 (approximately 17 %). Although early diagnosis is associated with improved long-term outcomes, FASD remains frequently underrecognized or misdiagn

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare uncomplicated pregnancies and pregnancies complicated by late-onset fetal growth restriction (FGR) in terms of myocardial performance index (MPI) and renal artery pulsatility index (PI), and to explore whether these parameters are associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: This prospective case–control study included 46 uncomplicated pregnancies and 51 pregnancies with late-onset fetal growth restriction. A composite adverse perinatal outcome was defined by the presence of stillbirth, neonatal death, any Apgar score < 7, need for neonatal r

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) remains a significant problem in obstetrics and is a key risk factor for perinatal brain injury. The fetal neuronal vesicles (FNVs) isolated from maternal blood represent an innovative approach-a "fetal brain liquid biopsy"-enabling early diagnostics of neuronal dysfunction in FGR. Western blotting was used to evaluate the protein pattern expression of FNVs isolated from the blood of pregnant women with FGR and uncomplicated pregnancy. Significant changes in the neurotrophic proteins levels (pro-BDNF, pro-NGF) and presynaptic neurotransmission proteins (SYN1, SYP

Individuals born after intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) are at increased risk of long-term cardiovascular complications, including elevated blood pressure, endothelial dysfunction, and arterial stiffness. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), particularly endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs), play a critical role in maintaining vascular homeostasis. Previously, Simoncini et al. observed that in a rat model of IUGR, six-month-old males exhibited elevated systolic blood pressure (SBP) and microvascular rarefaction compared with control (CTRL) rats. These vascular alterations were accomp

Background/Objectives: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) describes the situation of a fetus that fails to reach its genetic growth potential. Postnatal catch-up growth represents a central adaptive process, yet its timing and magnitude vary widely and may influence one individual's state of health and later metabolic risk. This study aimed to characterize longitudinal growth trajectories from birth to 10 years in children born at term, affected antenatally by growth restriction, with a particular focus on the influence of sex and FGR severity on catch-up growth. Methods: We conducted a retrospect

Parabens (PBs) are associated with altered fetal growth parameters, but the underlying mechanisms-particularly those involving placental function-remain unclear. To elucidate the mechanisms through PB exposure impairs placental steroidogenic function, thereby contributing to the pathogenesis of fetal growth restriction (FGR). Metabolic profiles in maternal serum samples from FGR cases (n = 20) and the matched controls (n = 20) within a Maternal-Child Health Cohort (Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University), which were prospectively collected in the first-trimester, were analyzed us

Biallelic variants in the STAMBP gene are known to cause Microcephaly-capillary malformation syndrome (MICCAP syndrome). Here we report an 18-month-old female with a novel splice site variant, c.376-1G>A in intron-4, with the phenotype of a patient who presented to us with fetal onset growth retardation, developmental delay, drug-resistant seizures, multiple capillary malformations, dysmorphism, tone abnormalities, and distal skeletal and nail abnormalities. Functional studies by RNA analysis and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) showed that the variant leads to loss of function. T

OBJECTIVE: To compare clinical differences and growth velocity patterns between early- and late-onset selective fetal growth restriction (sFGR) in monochorionic diamniotic (MC) twins.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study analyzed 394 MC twin pregnancies with sFGR (2017-2024). Early-onset (≤ 24 weeks) and late-onset (> 24 weeks) groups were compared for fetal growth velocity (serial EFW measurements) and perinatal outcomes (composite morbidity/mortality).
RESULTS: Before 28 weeks, the larger twin's EFW growth was similar in both groups. The smaller twin in late-onset sFGR grew faster than in

OBJECTIVES: The sFlt-1/PlGF ratio is a predictive biomarker for preeclampsia (PE)-related outcomes. In women with signs of PE at ≤34 weeks, it may guide the timing of antenatal corticosteroid (ACS) administration.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 702 women presenting with signs of PE and/or fetal growth restriction (FGR) between 22+0- and 33+6-weeks. High risk was defined as an sFlt-1/PlGF ratio ≥85. The predictive accuracy of the ratio for PE-related preterm birth at ≤34+0 weeks was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Differences in remaining pregnancy durati

INTRODUCTION: Our objectives were to evaluate the association between fetal growth abnormalities and adverse perinatal outcomes in term pregnancies using four different fetal growth references: the recently published Swedish references by Lindström et al., the currently used Swedish references by Maršál et al., and the international standards by the WHO and INTERGROWTH-21st (IG21st). The study aimed to evaluate the performance of each reference and determine which reference most accurately identifies small for gestational age (SGA) infants at risk of perinatal mortality and morbidity.

Ravulizumab, a humanized, long-acting monoclonal antibody against complement factor C5, is a widely used treatment for paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). Given that pregnant women with PNH are at increased risk for complications and the safety and efficacy of ravulizumab in pregnancy is not known, we performed an international multicenter retrospective analysis of 16 patients with PNH with 19 pregnancies managed with ravulizumab and compared outcomes to 8 earlier pregnancies in the same patients treated with eculizumab. Of the 8 eculizumab-treated pregnancies, 3 resulted in miscarriage
