BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a leading cause of perinatal mortality worldwide and is strongly associated with maternal-fetal inflammation. Nutritional interventions that mitigate inflammatory stress during pregnancy may represent a viable strategy to improve fetal outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether maternal docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplementation protects against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced FGR in mice and explored the underlying mechanisms involving inflammatory signaling and gut-placenta interactions.
METHODS: Institute of Cancer Research mice (6

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) affects ∼10% of pregnancies worldwide and is often associated with placental insufficiency. Iron is essential for maternal haematopoietic adaptations and placental processes such as mitochondrial iron-sulphur (Fe-S) cluster assembly, haem synthesis and erythropoiesis. This study aimed to characterise iron transport and downstream utilisation in FGR. Placental tissues from term uncomplicated (n = 19) and FGR (n = 18) pregnancies were analysed. Maternal iron status was retrospectively assessed from clinical records. Placental mRNA and protein expression of iron-dep

Placental insufficiency is a central pathological condition underlying fetal growth restriction and is strongly associated with adverse outcomes during the neonatal period. Although epidemiological and clinical studies have consistently linked compromised placental function to neonatal respiratory, neurological, gastrointestinal, and infectious morbidity, the mechanisms through which placental insufficiency translates into organ-specific neonatal vulnerability remain unclear. Increasing evidence from human observations and experimental animal models indicates that placental insufficiency disru

Stillbirth prevention requires a multifaceted approach focused on identifying and managing placental insufficiency-the leading cause in high-resource settings. Traditional risk factors such as age and body mass index have limited predictive value, emphasizing the need into investigation using ultrasound, Doppler studies, and biomarkers for universal screening. Effective interventions include low-dose aspirin, which reduces placental-related complications, and optimal management of maternal conditions like hypertension and diabetes. Broader strategies such as education on fetal movement, smokin

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is common in premature infants and can significantly impact long-term physical and neurological development. While breastfeeding is the gold standard for nutrition, its role in optimizing postnatal growth for this specific population requires further investigation.
OBJECTIVE: This study compared growth trajectories specifically weight, length, and head circumference between preterm infants with and without IUGR at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months of corrected age (CA) in Rabat. It also evaluated the impact of maternal feeding during the first six m

BACKGROUND: Early-onset fetal growth restriction (eoFGR) is associated with high risks of adverse outcomes and a key dilemma in clinical obstetrical practice in determining the optimal timing of birth. Cardiotocography (CTG) is an important tool for antepartum fetal surveillance and typically assessed visually. Computerised CTG including short term variation (STV) analysis offers an objective analysis by quantifying the beat-to-beat variation in the fetal heart rate. Currently, there is a lack of randomized studies of sufficient power that examine whether birth intervention based on such quant

Flutolanil (FLTN), a widely used succinate dehydrogenase-inhibiting fungicide, has raised concerns regarding potential health risks. This study examined the effects of the commercial formulation of FLTN (FLTN-CF) on pregnant rats and their fetuses during organogenesis, as well as the potential protective effects of Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris). Maternal exposure to FLTN-CF (170 and 510 mg/kg) increased fetal resorptions, growth retardation, skeletal malformations, and morphological anomalies. Histopathological examination of maternal and fetal livers revealed pronounced damage. FLTN-CF als

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate whether the predictive performance of the uterine artery pulsatility index (UtA-PI) for composite adverse perinatal outcomes (CAPO) in late-onset fetal growth restriction (FGR) differs according to maternal age. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included singleton pregnancies with late-onset FGR (≥ 32 weeks of gestation) managed at a tertiary care center. Mean UtA-PI measured at diagnosis was normalized for gestational age and evaluated for its association with CAPO across predefined maternal age groups. Predictive performance was assessed using

Hypoxia plays a critical role in regulating vascular function, with endothelial mechanosensitive proteins, such as the piezo-type mechanosensitive ion channel component 1 (Piezo1), emerging as key players in maintaining vascular homeostasis. Piezo1 is essential for nitric oxide-mediated vasodilation and vascular tone regulation. However, the impact of hypoxia on endothelial Piezo1 expression and function remains poorly understood. The present study investigated the regulation of Piezo1 and mechanosensitive-related genes (MRGs) during hypoxic development and their role in fetal growth restricti

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a major cause of perinatal morbidity and significantly increases the risk of metabolic syndrome in adulthood. Instead of being a simple adaptive response to intrauterine stress, reprogramming of lipid metabolism acts as a core toxic effect pathway, mediating the link between adverse prenatal exposure and lifelong metabolic dysfunction. This review focuses on fetal fatty acid (FA) metabolic perturbations in IUGR, emphasising the dysregulation of key processes: FA transport, de novo synthesis, and desaturation/elongation. We examine the underlying molecu

OBJECTIVES: Fetal growth restriction (FGR), commonly caused by placental insufficiency, is a critical obstetric condition requiring accurate and timely detection to mitigate adverse outcomes. Placental sonoelastography, an advanced ultrasound technique that evaluates tissue stiffness, has emerged as a promising tool for assessing placental health.
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted following PRISMA guidelines to evaluate the usefulness of placental elastography in FGR. We performed a comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science up to January 202

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gestational hypertension (GH) is increasingly recognized as an early manifestation of maternal cardiovascular vulnerability. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) enables the evaluation of circadian blood pressure behavior, and a non-dipping blood pressure pattern (NDBP), defined as a nocturnal systolic decline of <10%, has been associated with endothelial dysfunction, placental hypoperfusion, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, the prognostic value of NDBP for postpartum chronic hypertension (PPCHT) remains insufficiently explored.
