Incidence and prevalence of acquired brain injury in children and young people globally: A systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Acquired brain injury refers to any injury or damage to the brain post-birth. It is considered a silent epidemic due to late or missed diagnosis, despite continued interaction with healthcare and longer-term impacts. There is a paucity of robust contemporary evidence that quantifies the population burden of childhood acquired brain injuries. This study aims to estimate the global burden of childhood acquired brain injury by pooling estimates of incidence and prevalence overall, by subtype, and by severity. We will assess variation by time, sociodemographic and clinical characteri

Can spiritual care education reduce the anxiety of mothers of hospitalized immature infants?

BACKGROUND: Hospitalization of a preterm infant in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a significant stressor for mothers, often leading to heightened anxiety that affects both their well-being and maternal-infant interaction. Spiritual self-care is a nonpharmacological approach that can help mothers manage anxiety and cope with their child's hospitalization. This study examines the impact of spiritual self-care education on maternal anxiety in mothers with preterm infants admitted to the NICU. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This quasi-experimental study involved 90 mothers of preterm infants,

Real world experience of carglumic acid for methylmalonic and propionic acidurias: the second interim analysis of the multicentre observational PROTECT study.

INTRODUCTION: Propionic aciduria (PA) and methylmalonic aciduria (MMA) are rare inherited metabolic disorders marked by recurrent metabolic decompensation and hyperammonaemia, resulting in neurological morbidity, chronic complications, and substantial healthcare burden. Although carglumic acid (Carbaglu®) is established for acute hyperammonaemic crises, evidence for its long-term use is limited. This study reports the 18-month interim analysis of PROTECT, a large prospective observational study evaluating chronic Carbaglu® therapy in PA and MMA. METHODS: PROTECT is a prospective, longitudinal

Case Report: CBFA2T3::GLIS2-positive myeloid sarcoma with focal bone marrow involvement mimicking Ewing sarcoma in an infant.

CBFA2T3::GLIS2-positive myeloid neoplasms occur predominantly in infants and can closely mimic pediatric small round cell sarcomas. We describe a 14-month-old boy who presented with left leg pain, an abnormal gait, and a destructive left ischial mass. Tissue biopsy was initially interpreted as an undifferentiated Ewing-like sarcoma. Bone marrow aspiration contained approximately 2% unclassified large cells, while trephine biopsy demonstrated focal tumor infiltration. Marrow tumor cells showed strong CD56 and weak CD61 expression and were positive for WT1, CD43, ERG, CD117, and BCL2. Lysozyme,

Antenatal interventions to support newborn survival: updates for the Lives Saved Tool.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal care strategies encompass a series of interventions delivered to expectant mothers to optimise both their health outcomes and those of their neonate. We summarise the most recent effect estimates for maternal immunisation, screening and management of infections, pre-existing chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, nutrition, psychosocial interventions for smoking cessation, pre-term pre-labour rupture of membranes, administration of corticosteroids for foetal lung maturation, and induction of post-term labour. METHODS: We synthesised effect estimates for ante

Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children with tailored therapy and six-month outcome.

BACKGROUND: Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) is a hyperinflammatory condition with multi-organ involvement, particularly affecting the cardiac and gastrointestinal systems. Although immunomodulatory therapy is standard, treatment approaches vary. This study aimed to evaluate treatment modalities in MIS-C such as methylprednisolone (MP), intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), anakinra and therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) based on clinical severity and laboratory parameters in a prospectively followed cohort. METHODS: A total of 125 MIS-C patients were included in the study an

Death after discharge among children living with HIV admitted with suspected sepsis in Uganda: A secondary analysis of two prospective observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Children living with HIV in low-income countries contribute disproportionately to death after hospital discharge. This study investigates the effect of HIV on post-discharge mortality and readmission by exploring a wide range of clinical, maternal and socioeconomic variables. METHODS: A secondary analysis of children under 5 years old admitted with suspected sepsis. Participants were enrolled from two multisite observational studies conducted from 2012 to 2013 and 2017 to 2020 across six hospitals in Uganda. Participants were excluded if admitted outside the catchment area, for tr

Correlation between perinatal asphyxia-induced brain injury, number of enlarged perivascular spaces, and sleep quality in later life.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal asphyxia (PA) is increasingly recognized as a significant contributor to neonatal brain injury. Identifying reliable biomarkers for assessing the severity of injury is crucial. Enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVSs), which are considered imaging markers of glymphatic dysfunction are reliable indicators of disease severity and prognosis. However, the application of EPVSs among neonates remains unclear. This study aims to investigate whether numbers of EPVSs can serve as a novel biomarker for the severity of PA-induced brain injury (PABI) and the sleep quality in later life.

Developmental Osteopenia: An Explanation for Fractures in Young Infants.

AIM: The aim is to test whether a fraction of full-term infants pass through a phase of postnatal fracture susceptibility and whether this physiological phase explains real-world fracture age distributions in young infants. METHODS: Preterm infant data were used to establish fracture risk zones based on bone quality (using Speed of Sound, SOS) and metabolic activity (Alkaline Phosphatase, ALP) levels. These reference thresholds were applied to a full-term cohort to identify clinical overlap. Age distributions of full-term infants within risk zones were evaluated alongside paediatric fracture

Human-Centered Baby Massage Mobile App for Low Birth Weight Infants: Usability Testing and a Pre-Post Pilot Intervention Study in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight (LBW) is associated with increased risks of neonatal morbidity, developmental delays, and long-term health problems. Although baby massages have been shown to improve growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes in LBW infants, access to suitable training and adherence to massage protocols remain challenging, particularly in low-resource settings. Mobile health interventions may help address these gaps by providing scalable and standardized education on infant massage. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to design and evaluate a human-centered baby massage mobile app to support

Primary prevention of maternal anaemia to prevent preterm delivery and other adverse outcomes (PANDA): a protocol for a double-blind placebo-controlled randomised trial of a daily iron supplement during pregnancy.

UNLABELLED: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) affects up to 30% of all pregnant women often causing symptoms including malaise and lethargy which can significantly impact daily life and well-being. Additionally, IDA is associated with serious complications, including an increased risk of bleeding, preterm birth, small for gestational age babies and rarely, but significantly, stillbirth. The most common current management approach reactively treats IDA once it is diagnosed, usually with an oral iron preparation such as ferrous sulphate or another ferrous salt. There have been calls to investigate a

Beyond disease prevention: rotavirus vaccine rollout and child stunting in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Tanzania introduced the rotavirus vaccine in January 2013 to reduce the burden of diarrheal disease, a driver of malnutrition. While the vaccine's effect on diarrheal morbidity and mortality is well established, limited evidence exists on its broader effect on child growth outcomes, particularly stunting which affects about 30% of Tanzanian children under five. METHODS: Using data from the 2015/16 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS) with a sample of 8949 children, this study applies a reduced-form Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD) exploiting the vaccine eligibility c

Age-Stratified Prognostic Comparison of Three Chronotropic Incompetence Definitions in Patients with Suspected Coronary Artery Disease Undergoing Exercise Stress SPECT-MPI.

BACKGROUND: Chronotropic incompetence (CI) is an exercise-derived marker of impaired heart rate response with prognostic relevance in myocardial perfusion imaging, but its interpretation may vary by definition, particularly in older patients. We retrospectively compared three CI definitions in patients with suspected coronary artery disease undergoing symptom-limited exercise stress single-photon emission computed tomography myocardial perfusion imaging (SPECT-MPI). METHODS: In this dual-center cohort, 1,135 patients undergoing exercise stress SPECT-MPI were evaluated. CI was defined as failu
