Assessment of Limb Dominance and Trumpeter Posture in Children With Brachial Plexus Birth Injury.

BACKGROUND: Children with brachial plexus birth injuries (BPBIs) may experience atypical posturing when performing activities of daily living, including eating. Clinical assessments often evaluate feeding ability through hand-to-mouth movements, using the unaffected arm as an internal control. This study examined differences between dominant and nondominant limbs and affected and unaffected BPBI limbs during feeding tasks and aimed to understand better the etiology of trumpeter posture in children with BPBI. METHODS: Joint angles were measured during feeding tasks using 3-dimensional motion c

Long-Term Outcomes of Spinal Accessory Nerve to Musculocutaneous Nerve Transfer in Brachial Plexus Birth Injuries.

PURPOSE: Brachial plexus birth injuries (BPBI) can be life-changing for both the patient and family. While most resolve spontaneously, surgical intervention is indicated for those who fail to improve. This can be performed via nerve grafting or nerve transfer. The spinal accessory nerve is a commonly used extraplexal donor in brachial plexus surgery. In cases of BPBI, it can be transferred to the musculocutaneous nerve to restore elbow flexion. While there are short-term reports in BPBI, few, if any, long-term outcome data are available. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwe

A comparison in maternal and neonatal outcomes between mild fundal pressure and vacuum extraction for shortening the second stage of labor.

OBJECTIVE: Mild fundal pressure (MFP) and vacuum extraction (VE) are interventions used during the second stage of labor when clinical intervention is required. While VE is well established with standardized training and predictable risks, MFP remains controversial with limited comparative data. This study aimed to compare maternal and neonatal outcomes of MFP versus VE in women requiring intervention during the second stage of labor. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of women with singleton term pregnancies requiring intervention during the second stage of labor at a tertiary med

Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome staging in an internal medicine ward: an opportunity for risk stratification and intervention.

BACKGROUND: Effective rehabilitation of upper limb musculoskeletal disorders requires multimodal assessment to guide clinicians' decision-making. Furthermore, a comprehensive assessment must include reliable tests. Nevertheless, the interrelationship among various upper limb tests remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of easily applicable upper extremity assessments, including absolute values and asymmetries of muscle mechanical properties, pressure pain threshold, active range of motion, maximal isometric strength, and manual dexterity. A secondary aim was to explore c

Pediatric Insight to Humanitarian and Trauma Crisis Response: Operation Allies Refuge and Operation Allies Welcome at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric patients account for disproportionate medical resource utilization in times of disaster and war. This was demonstrated in 2021 during Operation Allies Refuge/Operation Allies Welcome (OAR/OAW) following withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC), a U.S. military hospital in Germany, played a pivotal role in medical support for evacuees from Afghanistan, including critically injured children. The objective of this study is to define the injury and disease patterns of pediatric patients admitted to LRMC during OAR/OAW. MATERIALS

Reproductive and Female Health in the Australian Defence Force 2002-2023: A Systematic Review and Synthesis.

INTRODUCTION: Military service involves potential exposure to a range of physical, chemical, and biological hazards that could impact reproductive health. Females represent 20% of Australian Defence Force (ADF) members and, like many military services, the ADF is prioritizing their recruitment and retention. However, given that females have different physiology and anthropometry, specific female occupational research is essential. This systematic review aimed to retrieve and summarize the findings of research involving currently serving ADF personnel with outcomes relevant to male or female re

Genetic architecture of swine inflammation and necrosis syndrome and its genetic correlation with repeated skin damage scores.

Lesions and injuries to the extremities of the pig's body parts, like the tail and ears, are often associated with biting. However, lesion signs observed at birth and in 3-d-old piglets suggest that injuries may also result from swine inflammation and necrosis syndrome (SINS), which occurs without animal interaction. We aimed to investigate whether 1) there is a direct and maternal genetic effect on SINS; 2) we can use a proxy for different body parts for SINS and skin damage; 3) there is a genetic correlation between SINS and skin damage recorded in multiple time points; 4) there are genetic

Neonatal outcomes after reduction of nulliparous term singleton vertex cesarean deliveries.

Rising global cesarean delivery rates have become a marked public health concern, prompting national and international organizations to advocate for measures aimed at reducing primary cesarean rates. The impact of decreasing cesarean rates on neonatal outcomes remains understudied. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a hospital-wide initiative to reduce nulliparous term singleton vertex cesarean delivery rates on neonatal and maternal outcomes, focusing on identifying improvements or unintended consequences associated with the reduction in nulliparous term singleton vertex cesarean rate

Possible mechanisms and clinical innovations of sequential embryo transfer in assisted reproduction.

This review comprehensively discusses the innovative value and scientific mechanism of sequential embryo transfer (SET) technology in assisted reproduction. SET, by transferring embryos in stages, offers a novel approach to address clinical challenges in patients with recurrent implantation failure (RIF) and poor ovarian response (POR). The core mechanism involves bidirectional signal regulation between the embryo and endometrium. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) released by embryos during the initial transfer contain bioactive molecules like proteins, microRNA (miRNA), and mRNA. Through bidirecti

Beyond the birthing body: Towards a relational and inclusive understanding of birth trauma. A commentary on Donegan et al. (2025).

In their recent scoping review, Donegan, Zhao, and Mansu (2025) provide a valuable synthesis of international best practice guidelines on birth trauma support for birthing women. While several reviews have explored fathers' experiences of traumatic or complicated births and proposed recommendations for improved care, systematic implementation and empirical evaluation remain limited. In this commentary, we broaden Donegan et al.'s focus on birthing women by extending the scope of trauma-informed perinatal care to also include non-birthing parents. Drawing on findings from a Danish qualitative s
