Infantile traumatic pericallosal aneurysm: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic aneurysms are a rare sequela of nonaccidental head trauma in infants. The rate of nonaccidental trauma (NAT) in the pediatric population is increasing; therefore, traumatic aneurysms are an important consideration in the evaluation of pediatric patients with abusive head trauma. OBSERVATIONS: A 24-day-old infant with no significant past medical or birth history presented with twitching and poor oral intake for 1 day. The patient was found to have bilateral subdural hematomas, multifocal contusions, and traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage. NAT work-up was remarkable for a p

Birth-related subdural hemorrhage in asymptomatic neonates: evolution over time and differentiation from traumatic subdural hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial birth-related subdural hemorrhage frequently occurs in asymptomatic newborns and has no adverse long-term sequelae. It is medically and medicolegally important to differentiate birth-related subdural hemorrhage from other pathological causes of intracranial hemorrhage. There is limited literature available on the incidence of birth-related subdural hemorrhage, its imaging features, and evolution over time, mainly because asymptomatic infants do not routinely undergo cranial MRI. OBJECTIVE: To establish the incidence and distribution of birth-related subdural hemorrhag

Targeting ferroptosis in treating traumatic brain injury: Harnessing the power of traditional Chinese medicine.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) exhibits high prevalence and mortality, but current treatments remain suboptimal. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has long been effectively used for TBI intervention. Moreover, the recently discovered iron-dependent cell death pathway, known as ferroptosis, characterized by lipid peroxidation, as a key target in TCM-based treatments for TBI. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in TCM strategies targeting ferroptosis in TBI therapy, covering natural product monomers, classic formulas, and acupuncture/moxibustion. The review al

Noble gas and neuroprotection: From bench to bedside.

In recent years, inert gases such as helium, argon, and xenon have gained considerable attention for their medical value. Noble gases present an intriguing scientific paradox: although extremely chemically inert, they display a remarkable spectrum of clinically useful biological properties. Despite a relative paucity of knowledge about their mechanisms of action, some noble gases have been used successfully in clinical practice. The neuroprotection elicited by these noble gases has been investigated in experimental animal models of various types of brain injuries, such as traumatic brain injur

Antipsychotic Use Among 1144 Patients After Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

Background and Purpose- At acute phase and neurointensive care, patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) may become agitated or delirious. We found no previous studies on psychotic disorders or antipsychotic drug (APD) use by long-term aSAH survivors. We defined the APD use and its risk factors among 12-month survivors of aSAH in an Eastern Finnish population-based cohort with long-term follow-up. Methods- We analyzed APD use in 1144 consecutive patients with aSAH alive at 12 months of the Kuopio intracranial aneurysm patient and family database and their age, sex, and birth mun

A Unique Type of Birth Trauma Mistaken for Abuse.

Pediatric abusive head trauma is a challenging subject across many disciplines. Of particular importance is the identification of mimics of abuse, so cause and manner of death can be properly assigned. We present the case of suspected child abuse involving an infant who presented unresponsive to the hospital with hypoglycemia, hypothermia, and bilateral parietal fractures. An autopsy revealed fractures associated with organizing scalp hemorrhage and gross leptomeningeal congestion and hemorrhage. The fractures were circular with external displacement, rounded margins, and subperiosteal new bon

Evaluations for abuse in young children with subdural hemorrhages: findings based on symptom severity and benign enlargement of the subarachnoid spaces.

OBJECTIVE Children who have subdural hematomas (SDHs) with no or minimal neurological symptoms (SDH-mild symptoms) often present a forensic challenge. Nonabusive causes of SDH, including birth-related SDH, benign enlargement of the subarachnoid spaces (BESS), and other proposed causes have been offered as etiologies. These alternative causes do not provide explanations for concomitant suspicious injuries (CSIs). If SDH with mild symptoms in young children are frequently caused by these alternative causes, children with SDH-mild symptoms should be more likely to have no other CSIs than those wh

The impact of synbiotic administration through in ovo technology on the microstructure of a broiler chicken small intestine tissue on the 1st and 42nd day of rearing.

BACKGROUND: According to research, fast skating on short distances increases functional asymmetry of leg muscles. As has been proven in many sporting disciplines, this asymmetry can increase the risk of injury. The aim of the study was to analyze the level of right and left myolectrical manifestations of fatigue asymmetry of gluteus maximus muscle in elite skaters on a short track and to compare this phenomenon to a control group. The muscles were chosen deliberately, due to their influence in maintaining the right position during training on ice. METHODS: The experiment compared a group of e

A systematic review of the risks factors associated with the onset and natural progression of hydrocephalus.

The purpose of this study was to systematically assess and synthesize the world literature on risk factors for the onset and natural progression of hydrocephalus, thereby providing a basis for policy makers to identify appropriate risk management measures to mitigate the burden of disease in Canada. Evidence for risk factors was limited for both onset and progression. Two meta-analyses that examined a risk factor for onset met the inclusion criteria. One found a significant protective effect of prenatal vitamins among case control studies, but not cohort/randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Th

Cerebral tissue pulmonary embolism after severe head trauma in an infant.

Cerebral tissue pulmonary embolism (CTPE) is a very rare complication of severe head trauma. Nearly 20 cases of CTPE have been reported in neonates after birth trauma and even fewer cases in children and adults. We report a 4-month-old infant boy who sustained severe head trauma when he was accidentally dropped by his stepfather. Autopsy revealed multiple skull fractures, dural venous sinus laceration, subdural and subarachnoid hemorrhages, and brain maceration and extrusion. Microscopically, there was widespread embolism of brain tissue in medium- to small-sized pulmonary arteries.
