Association between C-myc and K-ras gene polymorphisms and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between c-myc and K-ras gene polymorphisms and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 200 NHL patients in our hospital in the past 3 years were collected as disease group, while 200 healthy people were taken as control group. The genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in the peripheral blood was extracted in both groups, amplified via Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and sent to the company for the detection of c-myc and K-ras gene polymorphisms. The expressions of c-myc and K-ras were detected via Reverse Transcription-quantitative PCR

Whole-Body Cooling and Erythropoietin in Neonatal Cervical Spine Injury.

There is mounting experimental evidence that therapeutic hypothermia (TH) mitigates secondary mechanisms of spinal cord injury (SCI). There is a potential synergistic neuroprotective effect for SCI through the combination of TH and other promising therapies. The treatment of TH for SCI has promising results in adults, but its use is anecdotal in newborns with SCI. SCI is a rare, serious, and often fatal complication of instrumental delivery. For the first time, we describe the case of a male newborn infant with upper SCI who was born at term age and was offered whole-body cooling and erythropo

Breech delivery, rupture of Batson's plexus, T8 epidural hematoma, and paraplegia.

A male newborn born by an atraumatic vaginal frank breech delivery was noted to have normal limb movement at birth. However, at 24 hours the neonate developed paraplegia with no evidence of spinal cord injury on radiographic films. Ultrasound and MRI demonstrated an epidural hematoma at the level of T8 and distal cord edema which extended to the conus medullaris. Delayed onset paraplegia following an atraumatic vaginal breech delivery is unlikely to have been caused by acute traction or torsion at birth. Traction and torsion injuries would present acutely. This infant developed a T8 epidural h

Defining the upper limit of the second stage of labor in nulliparous patients.

BACKGROUND: Increased duration of the second stage of labor provides clinical challenges in decision-making regarding the optimal mode of delivery that minimizes maternal and neonatal morbidity. OBJECTIVE: In a large cohort of uncomplicated nulliparous singleton cephalic labors, we sought to examine the effect of increasing duration of second stage on delivery and perinatal outcome. STUDY DESIGN: The GENESIS Study recruited 2336 nulliparous patients with vertex presentation in a prospective double-blinded study to examine prenatal and intrapartum predictors of delivery. Metrics included mate

Etv1 Controls the Establishment of Non-overlapping Motor Innervation of Neighboring Facial Muscles during Development.

The somatotopic motor-neuron projections onto their cognate target muscles are essential for coordinated movement, but how that occurs for facial motor circuits, which have critical roles in respiratory and interactive behaviors, is poorly understood. We report extensive molecular heterogeneity in developing facial motor neurons in the mouse and identify markers of subnuclei and the motor pools innervating specific facial muscles. Facial subnuclei differentiate during migration to the ventral hindbrain, where neurons with progressively later birth dates-and evolutionarily more recent functions

Obstetric neonatal brachial plexus and facial nerve injuries: A 17 years single tertiary maternity hospital experience.

OBJECTIVES: To establish the incidence of obstetric neonatal brachial plexus and facial nerve injuries in a tertiary maternity hospital in the United Kingdom and to identify associated risk factors with an emphasis on the time of delivery. STUDY DESIGN: From our hospital electronic data bases we identified all live births born between 2000 and 2016 and those neonates who sustained a nerve injury during delivery. We performed a logistic regression analysis linking "facial nerve injury" and "brachial plexus injury" with variables for which we had complete cohort data including "breech", "gestat

Occipital mass in antenatal sonography.

Biophysical profile (BPP) with ultrasound performed for a 32-year-old G5P3013 admitted at 31 weeks gestation with preterm, premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) noted an extracalvarial mass concerning for an encephalocele. Fetal MRI demonstrated edema over the occiput with no definable lesion visualized. Preterm labor requiring Cesarean delivery resulted in a live male neonate at 33 weeks gestation. An occipital mass was observed on neonatal physical exam. Postnatal ultrasound and MRI were consistent with cephalohematoma. This was surprising given the lack of vaginal delivery. We hypothesize

Complications of operative vaginal delivery and provider volume and experience.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate associations between operative vaginal delivery complications and provider experience (operative vaginal delivery volume and time since residency). METHODS: We included all operative vaginal deliveries between 2008 and 2014 at a tertiary care teaching hospital, stratified into forceps-assisted and vacuum-assisted deliveries. Complications included severe perineal lacerations (3rd and 4th degree) and neonatal injuries (subgaleal/subdural/cerebral hemorrhage, facial nerve injury, and scalp injury), which were identified by International Classification Diagnosis-9 codes. Markers of perinatal hypoxia-ischaemia and neurological injury: assessing the impact of insult duration.

Hypoxic-ischaemic insults occurring during or after birth can cause both acute and long-term neurological impairment. The duration of the insult is a critical factor, but most published reports of duration have important limitations. After the onset of a persistent bradycardia in 125 term born infants, abnormal outcomes occurred in two by 10 minutes, in 12 out of 47 (26%) delivered between 11 and 20 minutes, and in 55 out of 65 (85%) delivered after 20 minutes. Series with unspecified gestation or including infants born preterm give comparable results in over 500 additional cases. Before 20 mi

Outcome assessment for Brachial Plexus birth injury. Results from the iPluto world-wide consensus survey.

There is no consensus regarding strategies to optimally treat children with a brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI). Comparison of outcome data presented by different centers is impossible due to the use of (1) many different outcome measures to evaluate results; (2) different follow-up periods after interventions; and (3) different patient ages at the time of assessment. The goal of iPluto (international PLexus oUtcome sTudy grOup) was to define a standardized dataset which should be minimally collected to evaluate upper limb function in children with BPBI. This dataset must enable comparison o

Long-term experience with diaphragm pacing for traumatic spinal cord injury: Early implantation should be considered.

BACKGROUND: Cervical spinal cord injury can result in catastrophic respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation with high morbidity, mortality, and cost. Diaphragm pacing was developed to replace/decrease mechanical ventilation. We report the largest long-term results in traumatic cervical spinal cord injury. METHODS: In this retrospective review of prospective institutional review board protocols, all patients underwent laparoscopic diaphragm mapping and implantation of electrodes for diaphragm strengthening and ventilator weaning. RESULTS: From 2000 to 2017, 92 patients out of 486

Spine duplication or split notochord syndrome - case report and literature review.

Context: Spine duplication is a rare condition, with various extents and severe additional anomalies. The goal of this study was to describe a unique case of a boy with split notochord syndrome who was followed up from birth until maturity. Findings: Physical examination at birth showed defects of the abdominal wall and cloacal exstrophy with visible urether outlets. A transposed anus was present in the perineal region. Split bony elements of the spine with nonpalpable sacral bone were noted. A soft, skin-covered lump, with the consistency of a lipoma, was present in the sacral area. There was

Protective effect of miconazole on rat myelin sheaths following premature infant cerebral white matter injury.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the protective effects of miconazole on myelin sheaths following cerebral white matter damage (WMD) in premature infant rats. Sprague Dawley rats (3-days-old) were randomly divided into four groups (n=30 each) as follows: Sham surgery group, WMD model group, 10 mg/kg/day treatment group and 40 mg/kg/day treatment group. A cerebral white matter lesion model was created by ligating the right common carotid artery for 80 min. Treatment groups were administered with 10 or 40 mg/kg miconazole at 4-8 days following birth (early treatment group) or 5-11

Transcapillary fluid flux and inflammatory response during neonatal therapeutic hypothermia: an open, longitudinal, observational study.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic hypothermia is neuroprotective in asphyxiated neonates by counteracting mechanisms contributing to brain injury. Although an initial increased permeability is part of an inflammatory reaction and thereby a natural healing process, an excessive endothelial permeability with edema formation may result in impaired hemodynamics. Reduced permeability may, however, benefit healing. Although plasma and interstitial colloid osmotic pressure are accessible and essential parameters for understanding fluid imbalance, the mechanisms of fluid exchange remain poorly understood. The p

Histopathological study of encephalomalacia in neonatal calves and application of neuronal and axonal degeneration marker.

Five calves that had shown neurological symptoms within 9 days after birth were histopathologically diagnosed as encephalomalacia. Two calves showed bilateral laminar cerebrocortical necrosis and neuronal necrosis in the corpus striatum and hippocampus. Since the distributional pattern of the lesions was consistent with that of global ischemia in other species, the lesions were probably hypoxic/ischemic encephalopathy consistent with the history of dystocia and perinatal asphyxia. One calf also showed bilateral laminar cerebrocortical necrosis. However, the lesions were chronic ones, because t

Outcome after fetoscopic laser coagulation in twin-twin transfusion syndrome - is the survival rate of at least one child at 6 months of age dependent on preoperative cervical length and preterm prelabour rupture of fetal membranes?

Purpose: Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) complicates 10-15% of all monochorionic twin pregnancies. Selective laser coagulation of placental anastomoses is the only causal therapy. The aim of this study was to analyze the neonatal survival, the survival rate of at least one child at 6 months of age, and maternal outcome after laser therapy in a Swiss cohort.Material and methods: Between 2008 and 2014, 39 women were treated with fetoscopic laser procedure due to TTTS. Two women were excluded from the study because of missing informed consent or loss of follow-up. The women were divided

Mechanical birth-related trauma to the neonate: An imaging perspective.

Mechanical birth-related injuries to the neonate are declining in incidence with advances in prenatal diagnosis and care. These injuries, however, continue to represent an important source of morbidity and mortality in the affected patient population. In the United States, these injuries are estimated to occur among 2.6% of births. Although more usual in context of existing feto-maternal risk factors, their occurrence can be unpredictable. While often superficial and temporary, functional and cosmetic sequelae, disability or even death can result as a consequence of birth-related injuries. The
