Spontaneous cleft palate in a newborn gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla).

OBJECTIVE: We report the first case of cleft palate in a newborn male gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla). CASE HISTORY AND RESULTS: The full-term infant was born to clinically healthy, wild-caught parents and survived 5 days. Autopsy disclosed a unilateral cleft palate, moderate scalp hemorrhage (birth versus postnatal trauma), cerebral edema, and a sterile fibrin vegetation in the heart. The palate was also shorter and narrower than expected, and the biorbital breadth was reduced; otherwise, growth and development appeared normal. Standard cranial and intraoral radiographs and three-dimension

CD18-dependent leukocyte adherence and vascular injury in pig cerebral circulation after ischemia.

Recent accumulating evidence indicates that leukocytes contribute importantly to ischemic brain injury. Although large numbers of leukocytes are present in the ischemic territory of reperfused brain 24-48 h after the ischemic insult, little is known of the acute inflammatory response to cerebral ischemia, particularly regarding the time course and magnitude of leukocyte adherence to cerebrovascular endothelium and the functional consequences of such adherence. To study these issues, we developed an epifluorescence videomicroscopy system for observing and quantifying the dynamic behavior of rho

Neonatal subgaleal haematoma: associated risk factors, complications and outcome.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the obstetric and perinatal factors, in particular the method of delivery, associated with development of a subgaleal haematoma (SGH) and to determine the outcome of survivors with this type of birth trauma. METHODOLOGY: Perinatal and obstetric data were retrospectively reviewed for 37 infants admitted to the neonatal unit of the sole tertiary paediatric referral hospital in Western Australia with an SGH, over a 24 year period from 1970 to 1993. These data were compared to data for all Western Australian births. The long-term outcome was obtained through medical and pri

Deferoxamine posttreatment reduces ischemic brain injury in neonatal rats.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Iron catalyzes the formation of damaging reactive species during cerebral reperfusion. Brain iron concentration is highest at birth, so the brain of the asphyxiated newborn may be at increased risk of iron-dependent injury. We investigated whether the ferric iron chelator deferoxamine could reduce hypoxic-ischemic brain injury in neonatal rats. Because deferoxamine has concentration-dependent activities other than iron chelation, we measured brain deferoxamine levels and calculated deferoxamine pharmacokinetic parameters. METHODS: We produced hypoxic-ischemic injury to

Magnetic resonance imaging in the evaluation of spinal cord injury without radiographic abnormality in children.

Seven children aged birth to 17 years with spinal cord injury without radiographic abnormality (SCIWORA) were studied with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) between 3 hours and 16 days after the injury. There were six cervical cord injuries and one thoracic cord injury. The MRI findings were divided into two groups: extraneural and neural. The extraneural findings included one case of anterior longitudinal ligament disruption and anterior C6-C7 disc herniation associated with hyperextension; one case of posterior longitudinal ligament disruption and C2-C3 disc herniation associated with lateral

Effect of quinolinic acid administered during pregnancy on the brain of offspring.

The brains of rat offspring were histologically and histochemically examined after quinolinic acid administration to mothers during the gestation period. Quinolinic acid was administered intraperitoneally in a dose of 30 or 60 mmol, once daily, throughout the entire gestation period. Brain specimens were taken on days 1, 5, and 21 after birth from experimental and control animals. The neuronal cell body injury was detected in the selected brain formations. More profound alterations were seen in the substantia nigra and cerebral cortex, especially within the entorhinal area, whereas much less d

Cranial ultrasonography, CK-BB and neurological assessment as predictors of outcome in hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy.

A comparison of cranial ultrasonography, CK-BB and neurological assessment was undertaken in 30 (16 severely, 14 moderately) asphyxiated newborns. In the 16 severely asphyxiated newborns, cranial ultrasonography proved to be of value when changes of 'cerebral oedema' persisted for longer than 48 hrs. Although the mean creatine-kinase (CK-BB) activity at 12-33 hrs after birth was higher compared with that in controls of the same age, the numbers were too small in the different age categories for statistical analysis. The 81.25% specificity of ultrasound as compared with 76.47% of CK-BB suggests

Clinical view of disturbances in equine foetal maturation.

This review summarises comparative aspects of equine pregnancy and birth. The allantochorion covers the entire endometrial surface of the mare's uterus and the placenta is microcotyledonary and epitheliochorial in structure. The foetus has, therefore, to pass through the allantochorion at birth. The umbilical cord has amniotic and allantoic portions and remains intact after delivery, enabling an arterial venous circulation to be maintained for several minutes. Maternal IgG does not cross the placental barrier and passive transfer post-natally is essential for immune status. Gestation in Thorou

Reversal sign on CT: effect of anoxic/ischemic cerebral injury in children.

A retrospective study was performed to determine the clinical and pathologic features, etiology, and outcome of children with the reversal sign. The reversal sign, a striking CT finding, probably represents a diffuse, anoxic/ischemic cerebral injury. CT features of the reversal sign are diffusely decreased density of cerebral cortical gray and white matter with a decreased or lost gray/white matter interface, or reversal of the gray/white matter densities and relatively increased density of the thalami, brainstem, and cerebellum. Twenty children with the reversal sign were retrospectively anal

Prenatal radiation risk to the brain.

The Central Nervous System (CNS) exhibits a high sensitivity to ionizing radiation from conception until after birth. X-irradiation damage of the nervous system during development has been well documented and exposure to ionizing radiation above approximately 10 cGy during perinatal development is contraindicated. Shielding of the embryo or fetus usually prevents gross malformations but high energy irradiation of the pregnant female may result in embryonic growth retardation. This may be especially true when the irradiation is coupled with an ethanol-induced reduction in SOD activity. The syne

[Role of perivascular phagocyte (FGP) of cerebral small blood vessel in cerebral edema].

Small cerebral blood vessels are provided with slender phagocytic cells which were designated as FGP (fluorescent granular perithelial) cells from their localization and property. They were derived from pial cells and became potent in the uptake capacity for exogenous substance about at one week after birth. The present study aims to confirm the role of FGP cells and to clarify morphological changes of them in cerebral edema. Cerebral cortices of Wistar rats received head injury (caused with dry ice) were studied electron microscopically at 0.5, 2, 5, 10, 16, 30, 48 and 72 hours after the inju

Pericerebellar fluid collections in infancy, sequelae of birth injury? A retrospective CT study.

Retrospective analysis of axial CT scans from 600 consecutive pediatric patients revealed 37 patients (6%) with abnormal low density pericerebellar spaces. Fourteen of these 37 patients (38%) were diagnosed as cerebellar atrophy, whereas 23 of the 37 patients (62%) were diagnosed as mass-like pericerebellar fluid collections. Detailed analysis of the morphology of these spaces suggests that the CT criteria proposed in this paper distinguish between (a) those low attenuation pericerebellar spaces that represent cisternal dilatation caused by cerebellar atrophy (Group I - Atrophy) and (b) those

Fetal skull fracture and brain injury after a maternal automobile accident. A case report.

A woman in labor and not wearing a seat belt sustained multiple fractures of the pelvis and femur while in an automobile accident. The fetus suffered fractures of the parietal and occipital bones. To minimize maternal pelvic and fetal injury, delivery by cesarean section was performed. The infant had generalized cerebral edema and intraventricular and subarachnoid hemorrhage, diagnosed shortly after birth. Motor abnormalities and residual injury to the periventricular white matter were evident at age 4 months. Use of seat belts may significantly diminish or prevent such injuries.

[Studies on ultrastructural changes in perivascular cells (F.G.P.) of small cerebral vessels at the initial stage after cold injury--chronological observations on F.G.P. within 24 hours].

As the potentiated cells in reaction to cerebral edema and damage, microglia, astrocytes and macrophages had been listed. Recent neuropathological study elucidated that most of cerebral macrophages were derived from blood leucocytes including monocytes. Several years ago, one of the authors reported the presence of histiocytic cells in perivascular space and named them as fluorescent granular perithelial (F.G.P.) cells from their morphological characteristics. The present paper is concerned with the response of the F.G.P. cells to the vasogenic edema induced with cold injury. The animals emplo

Spinal cord transection, cerebral ischaemic and brain-stem injury in a baby following a Kielland's forceps rotation.

A full-term infant suffered a high cervical cord transection after a Kielland 's forceps rotation and extraction. Quadriplegia developed immediately and initial cerebral swelling was followed by atrophy with ventricular dilatation on CT examination. Death occurred at 60 days. At post-mortem complete necrosis of the cervical cord at C2-C3 with old haemorrhage in the meninges was found, with damage to the inferior corpora quadrigemina , the thalamus, striatum, cerebellar and cerebral cortex. The mechanism is discussed briefly.

The value of CAT scanning following pediatric head injury.

The CAT scan has proven invaluable in the management of severe pediatric head traumas. The most frequent findings are those of subarachnoid hemorrhage and diffuse swelling. Mass lesions are readily identified by the CAT scan, and it is easy to distinguish between hematoma and/or edema in the acute stages. Follow-up scans have produced a much better understanding of the long-term pathophysiologic effects of head trauma on the injured child.

Laminar scars in cerebral white matter: a perinatal injury due to edema.

Branched plate-like demyelinated lesions were present in the gyral and central white matter of two individuals, 3 and 54 years of age. The degenerated areas contained very few axons and were densely gliotic, and in the older case, contained connective tissue fibers and were continuous with a large parenchymal cyst. The lesions were covered on both sides by normally myelinated white matter, often representing only the subcortical arcuate white matter, occasionally being considerably broader. In some of the latter zones, there was a central area of less severe degeneration which, however, spared
