INTRODUCTION: Aplasia cutis congenita is a rare condition characterized by a localized or widespread, complete or partial absence of skin at birth. In accordance with the pattern, location, underlying causes, and anomalies, Frieden divided aplasia cutis congenita into nine types. Approximately 80% of all lesions are found on the scalp. The purpose of this study is to describe uncommon instances of aplasia cutis congenita and how they are treated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study comprises six patients with aplasia cutis congenita belonging to either sex who attended to our dermatology outpati

To investigate neonatal injuries, morbidities and risk factors related to vaginal deliveries. This retrospective, descriptive study identified 3500 patients who underwent vaginal delivery between 2020 and 2022. Demographic data, neonatal injuries, complications arising from vaginal delivery and pertinent risk factors were documented. Neonatal injuries and morbidities were prevalent in cases of assisted vacuum delivery, gestational diabetes mellitus class A2 (GDMA2) and pre-eclampsia with severe features. Caput succedaneum and petechiae were observed in 291/3500 cases (8.31%) and 108/3500 cases

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether the precision of vacuum cup placement is associated with failed vacuum extraction(VE), neonatal subgaleal hemorrhage(SGH) and other VE-related birth trauma.
METHODS: All women with singleton term cephalic fetuses with attempted VE were recruited over a period of 30 months. Neonates were examined immediately after birth and the position of the chignon documented to decide whether the cup position was flexing median or suboptimal. Vigilant neonatal surveillance was performed to look for VE-related trauma, including subgaleal/subdural hemorrhages, skull fractures, sc

BACKGROUND: Membranous aplasia cutis congenita (MACC) presents at birth characterized by oval epidermis defect. Skin lesions with MACC have various clinic manifestations. In recent years, the usefulness of trichoscopy (scalp dermoscopy) has been reported for hair loss diseases. However, the dermoscopic features of MACC were mostly reported by case reports.
OBJECTIVES: To summarized the obvious dermoscopic characteristics of MACC.
MATERIALS & METHODS: These 56 cases met the clinical diagnostic criteria for MACC without forceps delivery complications or other birth injuries. To find the dermos

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate associations between operative vaginal delivery complications and provider experience (operative vaginal delivery volume and time since residency).
METHODS: We included all operative vaginal deliveries between 2008 and 2014 at a tertiary care teaching hospital, stratified into forceps-assisted and vacuum-assisted deliveries. Complications included severe perineal lacerations (3rd and 4th degree) and neonatal injuries (subgaleal/subdural/cerebral hemorrhage, facial nerve injury, and scalp injury), which were identified by International Classification Diagnosis-9 codes. Neonatal subgaleal hematomas (SGHs) are rare but potentially life-threatening complications of vacuum extraction deliveries. We report a rare case of four enlarging SGHs in an 11-day-old boy born without use of instruments during delivery. It is likely that trauma from the provider's fingers caused these SGHs during a normal vaginal delivery. Ultrasound findings confirmed the diagnosis of SGH, distinct from other birth trauma such as cephalohematoma or caput succedaneum.

BACKGROUND: Very few studies have investigated the neonatal outcomes after vacuum extraction delivery (VE) in the preterm period and the results of these studies are inconclusive. The objective of this study was to describe the use of VE for preterm delivery in Sweden and to compare rates of neonatal complications after preterm delivery by VE to those found after cesarean section during labor (CS) or unassisted vaginal delivery (VD).
METHODS: Data was obtained from Swedish national registers. In a population-based cohort from 1999 to 2010, all live-born, singleton preterm infants in a non-bre

The rate of birth trauma in the US has been reported to range between 0.2 and 37 birth traumas per 1000 births. Because of the minimal number of population-based studies and the inconsistencies among the published birth trauma rates, the rate of birth trauma in the US remains unclear. This is a cross-sectional study that was conducted using 890 582 in-hospital birth discharges from the 2003 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Kids' Inpatient Database. A neonate was defined as having birth trauma if their hospital discharge record contained an International Classification of Diseases, Ninth

OBJECTIVE: Birth trauma at delivery is a rare but significant prenatal complication. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of birth trauma and risk factors related to fetal injury.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Birth trauma was evaluated in singleton fetuses with no major anomalies and with vertex presentations over a 3-year period from 2002 to 2005. One hundred and forty-eight neonates, who experienced birth trauma, were prospectively identified and compared with 280 normal neonates. Both groups were delivered vaginally. Maternal and infant characteristics were evaluated as possible

OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine rates of birth trauma in 2 groupings (all International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision codes for birth trauma, and as defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Patient Safety Indicator [PSI]) among infants born by vaginal and cesarean delivery.
STUDY DESIGN: Data on singleton infants were obtained from the 2004-2005 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Nationwide Inpatient Sample.
RESULTS: The rates of Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality PSI and all birth trauma were 2.45 and 25.85 per 1000 births, respectively. Compared w

Vacuum-assisted deliveries are fairly commonly used in obstetrical practice. Most newborns who have a vacuum-assisted delivery undergo extracranial birth traumas that have no residual consequences. Vacuum-assisted deliveries that complicate intracranial vascular infarction are rarely reported. We present 2 cases of intracranial vessel infarction after vacuum-assisted deliveries. One newborn, with scalp erosion, showed an unusual left middle cerebral artery infarct, and the other, with a severe subgaleal hematoma, had a venous thrombosis. Before the diagnosis, made using brain ultrasonography,

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Neonatal subgaleal hematomas (SGHs) are infrequent but underdiagnosed collections of blood beneath the galea, often caused by vacuum delivery. With massive bleeding into the subgaleal space, exsanguination and hypovolemic shock can cause death in 20 to 60% of newborn infants. We report the first two known patients with extracranial cerebral compression caused by SGH. Also, the surgical evacuation of neonatal SGH has not been described previously.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: One patient was a full-term boy who was delivered via vacuum extraction after an uncomplicated preg

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical performance of a hand-held vacuum delivery system.
METHODS: Between December 1999 and September 2000, a prospective audit was undertaken of all vacuum deliveries performed at Derby City General Hospital.
RESULTS: In this period, 3296 deliveries occurred, of which 317 (9.6%) were by vacuum. Of these, data were collected on 300 (94.6%), 78 deliveries with the hand-held vacuum and 222 with standard vacuum. There were no differences in the demographic profiles, indication, gestational age at delivery, or birth weights between the two groups (P >.05 in all inst

BACKGROUND: Subgaleal hemorrhage results from a pericranial effusion of blood subsequent to neonatal trauma. This exceptional situation compared with other pericranial effusion conditions in the neonate may be life-threatening.
CASE REPORTS: We report the obstetrical and neonatal data in 5 cases of subgaleal hemorrhage observed in our unit over an 8-year 8-month period. We detail one particularly demonstrative case which illustrates the potentially serious course of certain clinical presentations.
DISCUSSION: Subgaleal hemorrhage is a clinical diagnosis. Signs of hemorrhagic shock are associ

OBJECTIVE: We report the first case of cleft palate in a newborn male gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla).
CASE HISTORY AND RESULTS: The full-term infant was born to clinically healthy, wild-caught parents and survived 5 days. Autopsy disclosed a unilateral cleft palate, moderate scalp hemorrhage (birth versus postnatal trauma), cerebral edema, and a sterile fibrin vegetation in the heart. The palate was also shorter and narrower than expected, and the biorbital breadth was reduced; otherwise, growth and development appeared normal. Standard cranial and intraoral radiographs and three-dimension

Twenty hemiplegic patients were studied with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) of the biceps brachii (BB) and the abductor pollicis brevis muscles (APB) were recorded on both sides simultaneously. TMS was carried out with an 8-shaped coil over different scalp positions in the intact hemisphere. Bilateral MEPs of BB were elicited in patients with later childhood lesions as well as early lesion, but those of APB were only elicited in the latter (up to 2 years). In patients with prenatal or birth lesion on BB and in all patients on APB, cortical maps of MEP a

Neonatal and maternal complications observed after 410 forceps deliveries were retrospectively compared to those occurring after spontaneous vaginal delivery. Mild scalp and facial lesions as well as facial palsy were significantly increased in the forceps group. No severe maternal complications were observed. A short literature review was done, and other instrumental extractions were discussed.

Four hundred and thirty-one vacuum extraction deliveries were reviewed during a five-year period from 1978 to 1983. All cases involved the use of the Kobayashi silastic cup vacuum extractor with nine participating obstetricians performing the procedures. Specific attention was directed toward maternal and fetal morbidity associated with the use of the silastic cup extractor. No maternal or fetal deaths occurred. Vaginal and cervical lacerations accounted for a 4% maternal morbidity rate. Seventy-five percent of the infants had Apgar scores greater than 7 at one minute, and 97% had scores great
