Fracture risk in the offspring of individuals with schizophrenia: A cohort study of 71,698 children.

BACKGROUND: Parental schizophrenia is associated with various adverse developmental outcomes in offspring, including neurodevelopmental impairments and elevated physical injury risks. However, limited evidence is available regarding the association between parental schizophrenia and fracture risk in offspring, particularly during adolescence-a developmental stage characterized by increased susceptibility to fractures. In this study, we investigated whether parental schizophrenia influences the risk of fractures in offspring. METHODS: Relevant data were collected from Taiwan's National Health

Identifying Risk Factors of Children Who Suffered Physical Abuse: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 25% of children in the United States experience child abuse or neglect, 18% of whom are physically abused. Physicians are often in a position to differentiate accidental trauma from physical child abuse. Therefore, the aim of this study was to review recent literature for risk factors associated with physical child abuse. METHODS: In this systematic review, three electronic databases were searched for articles published in the past 10 years, using the terms "abuse," "risk factors," and "children," with associated variations. A total of 1,568 articles were identified.

Neonatal mandibular fractures: a scoping review.

While uncommon, trauma-induced fractures to the neonatal mandible require unique consideration. A scoping review of neonatal mandibular fractures (NMF) was performed, in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were comprehensively searched, covering the period 1990 to March 2025. All studies that reported NMF (age <28 days) were considered eligible. Due to the nature of the studies found, only a descriptive analysis was performed. Seven articles reporting seven cases of NMF were included. Four cases were birth trauma

Newborn clavicle fractures: 5 year-review of a tertiary-care hospital.

OBJECTIVES: Clavicle fractures are the most common birth-related fractures. They may cause pain, arm mobility impairment, and brachial nerve injury (temporary or definitive). Therefore, we aimed to review the incidence, risk factors and prognosis of neonatal clavicle fractures in our hospital. METHODS: All cases of clavicle fractures diagnosed and registered during the neonatal period between 2018 and 2022, in a tertiary-care Portuguese hospital, were reviewed. Statistical descriptive analysis, odds ratios (ORs), and 95% confidence intervals(95%CI) were calculated. RESULTS: A total of 8132 b

Perinatal Femur Fracture Following Difficult Cesarean Delivery: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal femur fractures from birth trauma are rare, occurring in 0.1 to 2 per 1000 live births, with unclear associations with cesarean delivery. Limited literature leaves gaps in early detection, injury mechanisms, and management. CASE PRESENTATION: This is the case of a full-term female neonate with a femur fracture following a cesarean delivery for breech presentation. The delivery involved a difficult extraction, and the fracture was diagnosed immediately due to crepitus and a "popping" sound. Treatment was complicated by insurance. The patient received a Pavlik harness wit

Musculoskeletal Issues in Children and Adolescents: Abnormal Findings on the Newborn Musculoskeletal Examination.

Prenatal and delivery history guides a thorough musculoskeletal examination of the newborn. Amniotic bands from amniotic sequence/syndrome typically are apparent on visual inspection but may present as limb amputation. Management is guided by the degree of tissue compromise. Risk factors for birth trauma are maternal obesity, pelvic anomalies, macrosomia, and operative delivery. Fractures of the clavicle, humerus, and femur heal well with few sequelae. Splinting recommendations differ for each. Polydactyly, syndactyly, and clinodactyly are associated with syndromic conditions. In general, most

Femur Fracture in Klippel Trenaunay Syndrome: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome (KTS) is a medical condition that involves the abnormal enlargement of bones and soft tissues, along with the presence of arterio-venous malformations and cutaneous vascular nevus. This is an uncommon condition that is present from birth and affects the blood vessels. There are relatively few documented cases of how to treat fractures in the lower limbs of individuals with this condition. CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old Indian male patient presented to our emergency room with a history of trivial trauma resulting from slipping and falling on the floor. From

Ping-pong skull fracture in a neonate managed successfully with vacuum-assisted technique.

Ping-pong fractures (PPFs) are rare types of depressed skull fractures that occur in neonates due to mechanical traumatic factors. Such conditions result in inward bowing of the skull bones, but its continuity remains intact. In this paper, we report a case of PPF in a female newborn infant associated with instrumental delivery, which was managed non-surgically with a vacuum extraction method. Because such a condition is uncommon and can be effectively managed with a relatively easy non-invasive method, this case is clinically interesting.

Long-Term Outcomes of Obstetric Brachial Plexus Injury: A Single-Center Experience.

Obstetric brachial plexus injury (OBPI) is an important preventable complication of the birth process. While most cases recover in the early period, a substantial number result in sequelae. Despite established risk factors, there are cases that occur without any apparent risk factors. Our study aims to identify prenatal risk factors by examining OBPI cases born in our hospital and to provide insights into the prognosis of the disease by comparing cases with panplexopathy to those without. We included 31 cases followed for OBPI in our hospital. Risk factors related to the infant and the mother

Neonatal cardiorespiratory failure caused by splenic hemorrhages: a case report on a fatal and a rescued case.

Two cases of neonatal splenic hemorrhage with acute cardiorespiratory failure are described in this report. The first case involves a full-term neonate who was found unresponsive without any witnesses and could not be successfully resuscitated. A postmortem diagnosis revealed a splenic hemorrhage. Second case is an extremely premature neonate who experienced a witnessed cardiovascular collapse on the 14th day of life. Rapid cardiovascular support was administered, resulting in a positive outcome. While splenic hemorrhage is commonly associated with traumatic events, these cases highlight the n
