Fetal parietal bone fracture in late 3rd trimester secondary to traffic accident with improper seatbelt use: a case report.

Approximately half of the women in developed countries drive motor vehicles and the consequences of road traffic-related injuries involving pregnant women can be severe. This case report describes a rare injury of a parietal bone fracture in a fetus resulting from improper seatbelt use during a motor vehicle accident. A 36-year-old woman at 35 weeks of gestation was involved in a traffic accident while seated in the front seat wearing a seatbelt, but in an improper way for pregnant women. Transabdominal ultrasonography revealed a displaced fracture of the fetus's right parietal bone with an ov

Incidence, pattern and mechanisms of injuries and fractures in children under two years of age: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological data on injuries and fractures in children under two years of age is limited, thus, we aimed to explore the incidence, patterns and mechanisms. METHODS: Retrospective, population-based cross-sectional study including children under two, seen at the A&E department due to a trauma, or having a radiograph due to birth trauma. All radiographs were re-reviewed. RESULTS: Four hundred thirty children (49.8% female), mean age 14.7 months (SD 6.8), were included, of whom four had a high-energy trauma and 42 were birth-related. Of 388 children (50.3% female) (mean age 16.3

Congenital depressed skull fracture in a neonate without obstetric trauma.

UNLABELLED: Congenital depressed skull fractures (ping-pong fractures) without obstetric trauma are rare. A term male neonate delivered via uncomplicated caesarean section, demonstrated a right parieto-temporal skull depression (5 cm × 5 cm) at birth. Computed tomography revealed a 4 mm parietal depression without intracranial injury. No instrumental delivery or maternal trauma were present. The likely aetiology was intrauterine compression ('faulty foetal packing'). The patient was managed conservatively with close follow-up. CONTRIBUTION: This case underscores the importance of perinatal hi

Congenital Vault Depression in an Infant Requiring Manual Pelvis Disengagement During Delivery.

Congenital vault depression (CVD) is a rare neonatal cranial finding that typically results from chronic intrauterine pressure and remodeling rather than acute delivery trauma. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first that describes CVD in a term infant delivered via Caesarean section requiring manual pelvic disengagement due to a significantly impacted fetal head. Upon delivery, a 4 x 3 cm depression was noted in the right temporoparietal bone; however, the infant remained neurologically intact, and imaging via X-ray and computed tomography confirmed a concave deformity without

Impacted Fetal Head at Cesarean Birth: A Clinical Nursing Review.

Fetal head impaction (IFH) occurs when the presenting part becomes wedged in the maternal pelvis during a cesarean section, requiring additional maneuvers to complete birth. As cesarean rates have risen, so has IFH, estimated to occur in 1.5% of all births annually in the United States. Maternal complications include uterine extension, hemorrhage, bladder injury, and intensive care unit admission. Neonatal complications include low cord pH, skull fracture, intracranial hemorrhage, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, and death. These outcomes are not inevitable. Fracture risk in the offspring of individuals with schizophrenia: A cohort study of 71,698 children.

BACKGROUND: Parental schizophrenia is associated with various adverse developmental outcomes in offspring, including neurodevelopmental impairments and elevated physical injury risks. However, limited evidence is available regarding the association between parental schizophrenia and fracture risk in offspring, particularly during adolescence-a developmental stage characterized by increased susceptibility to fractures. In this study, we investigated whether parental schizophrenia influences the risk of fractures in offspring. METHODS: Relevant data were collected from Taiwan's National Health

Identifying Risk Factors of Children Who Suffered Physical Abuse: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 25% of children in the United States experience child abuse or neglect, 18% of whom are physically abused. Physicians are often in a position to differentiate accidental trauma from physical child abuse. Therefore, the aim of this study was to review recent literature for risk factors associated with physical child abuse. METHODS: In this systematic review, three electronic databases were searched for articles published in the past 10 years, using the terms "abuse," "risk factors," and "children," with associated variations. A total of 1,568 articles were identified.

Neonatal mandibular fractures: a scoping review.

While uncommon, trauma-induced fractures to the neonatal mandible require unique consideration. A scoping review of neonatal mandibular fractures (NMF) was performed, in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were comprehensively searched, covering the period 1990 to March 2025. All studies that reported NMF (age <28 days) were considered eligible. Due to the nature of the studies found, only a descriptive analysis was performed. Seven articles reporting seven cases of NMF were included. Four cases were birth trauma

Ping-pong skull fracture in a neonate managed successfully with vacuum-assisted technique.

Ping-pong fractures (PPFs) are rare types of depressed skull fractures that occur in neonates due to mechanical traumatic factors. Such conditions result in inward bowing of the skull bones, but its continuity remains intact. In this paper, we report a case of PPF in a female newborn infant associated with instrumental delivery, which was managed non-surgically with a vacuum extraction method. Because such a condition is uncommon and can be effectively managed with a relatively easy non-invasive method, this case is clinically interesting.

Management of impacted fetal head at cesarean delivery.

Globally, more than 1 in 5 women give birth by cesarean delivery, and at least 5% of these births are at full cervical dilatation. In these circumstances, and when labor has been prolonged in the first stage of labor, the fetal head can become low and wedged deep in the woman's pelvis, making it difficult to deliver the baby. This emergency is known as impacted fetal head. These are technically challenging births associated with serious risks to both the woman and the baby. The difficulty in disimpacting the fetal head increases maternal risks of hemorrhage and injury to adjacent organs and ma

Skeletal injuries after cesarean section - a rare differential diagnosis of child abuse.

Birth-related fractures are an important differential diagnosis of child abuse in early infancy. While fractures associated to vaginal deliveries are well known, cesarean section is not necessarily known to cause such injuries. Nevertheless neonatal fractures have been described after cesarean sections. To give an overview over the frequency and typical locations of such fractures, the appearance of symptoms and the timespan until diagnosis, a literature research was conducted via Google scholar and Pubmed, using the key words "cesarean section" and "fractures". Birth-related fractures after c

Precision of vacuum cup placement and its association with subgaleal hemorrhage and associated morbidity in term neonates.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether the precision of vacuum cup placement is associated with failed vacuum extraction(VE), neonatal subgaleal hemorrhage(SGH) and other VE-related birth trauma. METHODS: All women with singleton term cephalic fetuses with attempted VE were recruited over a period of 30 months. Neonates were examined immediately after birth and the position of the chignon documented to decide whether the cup position was flexing median or suboptimal. Vigilant neonatal surveillance was performed to look for VE-related trauma, including subgaleal/subdural hemorrhages, skull fractures, sc

Maternal and neonatal trauma following operative vaginal delivery.

BACKGROUND: Operative vaginal delivery (OVD) is considered safe if carried out by trained personnel. However, opportunities for training in OVD have declined and, given these shifts in practice, the safety of OVD is unknown. We estimated incidence rates of trauma following OVD in Canada, and quantified variation in trauma rates by instrument, region, level of obstetric care and institutional OVD volume. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study of all singleton, term deliveries in Canada between April 2013 and March 2019, excluding Quebec. Our main outcome measures were maternal trauma (e.g., obst
