Head Injury during Childbirth.

Head injuries are the most common type of birth injuries. Among them, most of the injuries is limited to the scalp. and the prognosis is good enough to be unnoticed in some cases. Intracranial injuries caused by excessive forces during delivery are rare. However, since some of them can be fatal, it is necessary to suspect it at an early stage and evaluate thoroughly if there are abnormal findings in the patient.

Ultrasound Instead of X-Ray to Diagnose Neonatal Fractures: A Feasibility Study Based on a Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Fracture is a common birth injury in neonates, and its diagnosis mainly depends on chest X-ray examination, while ultrasound is typically not included in the diagnostic work-up of neonatal fractures. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using ultrasound to replace X-rays for the diagnosis of fractures in newborns and to determine the ultrasound characteristics of such fractures. METHODS: Bedside ultrasound with an appropriate probe and scanning angle was performed on 52 newborn infants with suspected fractures based on physical examination findings, and the

Skull Fracture Healing in Children Up to 36 Months - A Cohort Analysis.

During medicolegal proceedings in cases of suspected child abuse it is sometimes argued that skull fractures could be sequelae from complications at birth or resulted from a prior witnessed accidental trauma that may have preceded the suspected abusive event. There is paucity of scientific evidence indicating timing for skull fracture healing in children up to 36 months old. Objective of this study was to assess the average time to imaging documentation of skull fracture healing in children up to 36 months old. We performed retrospective chart review and image analysis in children with documen

Decision-Making Challenge of Ping-Pong Fractures in Children: Case Exemplification and Systematic Review of Literature.

Ping-pong fractures have become less frequent, and no definite predictors to determine which fractures will elevate spontaneously and which should undergo surgical treatment have been clearly defined. Herein, the authors present a revision of the literature, in which 54 papers were included, with a total of 228 children studied. Patients who underwent surgery accounted for 30%; elevation through obstetrical vacuum or other aspiration systems was applied in 30%; and spontaneous resolution occurred in 40%; in 4 patients, percutaneous microscrew elevation was applied. Overall, in 96.4% of patient

Skull fracture during instrumental delivery using spatulas: A case report with CT-scan imaging.

Neonatal skull fracture is rare and instrumental delivery is one of the risk factors. We present a case of parietal bone fracture in a term newborn with Thierry's spatulas who benefited from a 3D brain scan. If many cases have been reported with the use of forceps whatever their type, our case is to our knowledge the first one described with spatulas.

Epidemiology of skeletal trauma and skull fractures in children younger than 1 year in Shenzhen: a retrospective study of 664 patients.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional injury is one of the top three causes of death for infants. However, the epidemiological studies of skeletal trauma and skull fractures in infants younger than 1 year were poorly understood in China. Therefore, our study aimed to examine accidental and emergency attendance in infants under 1 year. It also tried to determine the prevalence and severity of accident types in infants. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the demographic characteristics of infants younger than 1 year with skeletal trauma and skull fractures who visited the Shenzhen Children'

Neonatal Acute Epidural Hematoma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

We present a rare case of an acute epidural hematoma (EDH) in a neonate. The EDH was caused by a fall during natural vaginal delivery. The clinical findings were normal after fall and the first ultrasonographic study did not show any hematomas. A computed tomography scan on the second day after delivery showed an EDH with 20 mm thickness extending through a skull fracture into subgaleal space. We performed a craniotomy and removed the EDH and subgaleal hematoma. After the surgery we performed follow-up twice ultrasonographic study for seeking probable hematoma recurrence. The patient was disch

Difficult birth is the main contributor to birth-related fracture and accidents to other neonatal fractures.

AIM: Specific birth-related fractures have been studied; underestimates might be a problem. We aimed to assess all fractures diagnosed as birth-related as well as other neonatal fractures. METHODS: A population-based study on all infants born in Sweden 1997-2014; data were retrieved from the Swedish Health Registers (10th version of International Classification of Diseases. Outcome measures were birth-related fractures (ICD-10 P-codes) and other neonatal fractures (ICD-10 S-codes). RESULTS: The overall fracture incidence was 2.9 per 1000 live birth (N = 5336); 92.6% had P-codes and 7.4% (S-c

Correlation of Neonatal Birth-Associated Greenstick Skull Fractures with Perinatal Factors and Long-Term Outcome: Children with a Greater Number of Greenstick Skull Fractures Showed Poor Results in Terms of Long-Term Neurodevelopment.

OBJECTIVE: Skull fractures caused by birth injury are mainly compression and linear fractures, but the incidence is known to be rare. It has been recently suggested, however, that greenstick fractures (GSFs) are more common than compression or linear fractures that are detected through 3-dimensional reconstructed computed tomography. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the correlation of GSF with perinatal factors, the accompanying head injury factors, and the long-term outcomes in neonates. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on correlations between GSF and perinatal an

Neonatal birth fractures: a retrospective tertiary maternity hospital review.

We aimed to identify the incidence and types of neonatal birth fractures in a single tertiary maternity hospital in the United Kingdom and to find possible associated factors, including all live births born between 2000 and 2016. We reviewed hospital records and imaging of all neonates who had any imaging done to identify birth fractures. We identified 87,461 consecutive live births. Sixty-six sustained a fracture during delivery: 46 clavicle-, 13 humerus-, four skull-, one femoral-, one rib- and one tibial fracture. Five neonates with a clavicle or humeral fracture had an Erb's palsy. Sixty-f

A case-control study about foetal trauma during caesarean delivery.

OBJECTIVE: The caesarean section rate is gradually increasing in most countries. The frequency of occurrence of foetal injury per birth is estimated to 1%. The majority of these injuries presents a low functional impact, but remains responsible for a significant neonatal morbidity. Even though the foetal risk factors are well documented in cases of vaginal birth, they have not been accurately identified for caesarean section. The aim of this study is to identify the risk factors for neonatal fracture during caesarean section. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-control study comparing
