Incidence, pattern and mechanisms of injuries and fractures in children under two years of age: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological data on injuries and fractures in children under two years of age is limited, thus, we aimed to explore the incidence, patterns and mechanisms. METHODS: Retrospective, population-based cross-sectional study including children under two, seen at the A&E department due to a trauma, or having a radiograph due to birth trauma. All radiographs were re-reviewed. RESULTS: Four hundred thirty children (49.8% female), mean age 14.7 months (SD 6.8), were included, of whom four had a high-energy trauma and 42 were birth-related. Of 388 children (50.3% female) (mean age 16.3

Risk Factors for Neonatal Clavicular Fractures: A Population-Based Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal clavicular fractures represent the most common fracture during delivery. We aimed to define risk factors associated with these fractures in a large population-based database. METHODS: Data were extracted from Clalit Health Services' electronic health records from 2000 to 2020. Newborns with clavicular fractures were compared with a healthy control group. The following parameters were compared-for the newborns: sex, birth weight, birth height, and head circumference; for the delivery process: assisted delivery, cesarean section, use of epidural, birth week, and number of f

Risk factors for shoulder dystocia-related brachial plexus injuries: A case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Brachial plexus injury (BPI) is one of the major complications associated with shoulder dystocia. This study aimed to identify risk factors for shoulder dystocia-related BPI (SD BPI) in the Finnish population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included all deliveries in the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa between 2006 and 2015 (n = 181 352). Singleton deliveries complicated by shoulder dystocia, BPI, and clavicle fracture were identified using ICD-10 codes O66.0, P13.4, P14.0, and P14.1 (n = 1708). Following a thorough review of medical records, 374 cases of BPI were ide

[Forensic assessment of birth trauma in a full-term newborn: a case report].

The article describes a forensic medical examination of combined birth craniocerebral trauma in a full-term newborn, with a double, tight umbilical cord entanglement around the neck. The manifestations of the injuries in this case were: craniocerebral and spinal injuries, a fracture of the left clavicle. The connection between the injury and the use of an obstetric remedy - removal/cutting of the umbilical cord loops from the fetus's neck - has been proven.

A Rare Case of Femoral Shaft Fracture Linked to Childbirth.

Birth injuries occur rarely during Cesarean section thanks to antenatal care, skilled obstetricians, and decreased instrumental maneuvers. Most traumatic fractures during childbirth involve the clavicle and humerus, which are related to malposition and malpresentation. We report a rare case of femoral shaft fracture at childbirth. A 19-year-old primigravida with a normal antenatal history delivered a term newborn with a 2.14 kg birth weight by Cesarean section. A day after birth, the mother noticed a swelling on the baby's right thigh with mild deviation of the right limb compared to the left

Identifying Risk Factors of Children Who Suffered Physical Abuse: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 25% of children in the United States experience child abuse or neglect, 18% of whom are physically abused. Physicians are often in a position to differentiate accidental trauma from physical child abuse. Therefore, the aim of this study was to review recent literature for risk factors associated with physical child abuse. METHODS: In this systematic review, three electronic databases were searched for articles published in the past 10 years, using the terms "abuse," "risk factors," and "children," with associated variations. A total of 1,568 articles were identified.

Musculoskeletal Issues in Children and Adolescents: Abnormal Findings on the Newborn Musculoskeletal Examination.

Prenatal and delivery history guides a thorough musculoskeletal examination of the newborn. Amniotic bands from amniotic sequence/syndrome typically are apparent on visual inspection but may present as limb amputation. Management is guided by the degree of tissue compromise. Risk factors for birth trauma are maternal obesity, pelvic anomalies, macrosomia, and operative delivery. Fractures of the clavicle, humerus, and femur heal well with few sequelae. Splinting recommendations differ for each. Polydactyly, syndactyly, and clinodactyly are associated with syndromic conditions. In general, most

Long-Term Outcomes of Obstetric Brachial Plexus Injury: A Single-Center Experience.

Obstetric brachial plexus injury (OBPI) is an important preventable complication of the birth process. While most cases recover in the early period, a substantial number result in sequelae. Despite established risk factors, there are cases that occur without any apparent risk factors. Our study aims to identify prenatal risk factors by examining OBPI cases born in our hospital and to provide insights into the prognosis of the disease by comparing cases with panplexopathy to those without. We included 31 cases followed for OBPI in our hospital. Risk factors related to the infant and the mother

Neonatal cardiorespiratory failure caused by splenic hemorrhages: a case report on a fatal and a rescued case.

Two cases of neonatal splenic hemorrhage with acute cardiorespiratory failure are described in this report. The first case involves a full-term neonate who was found unresponsive without any witnesses and could not be successfully resuscitated. A postmortem diagnosis revealed a splenic hemorrhage. Second case is an extremely premature neonate who experienced a witnessed cardiovascular collapse on the 14th day of life. Rapid cardiovascular support was administered, resulting in a positive outcome. While splenic hemorrhage is commonly associated with traumatic events, these cases highlight the n

Gene-Environment Analyses Reveal Novel Genetic Candidates with Prenatal Tobacco Exposure in Relation to Risk for Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Associations between maternal tobacco exposure during pregnancy and childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have yielded mixed results. This may be due to biases in self-reported smoking or other differences in individual-level risk factors. We utilized a biological marker of maternal tobacco exposure to evaluate the association between maternal tobacco exposure during pregnancy, genetics, and subsequent childhood ALL risk in two large population-based studies of childhood ALL in California. METHODS: Maternal exposure to tobacco smoke was assessed with a validated methylation
