PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors for clavicle fracture concurrent with brachial plexus injuries.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary centre. The hospital records of 62,288 vaginal deliveries were evaluated retrospectively. There were 35 cases of brachial plexus injury. Of these patients, nine had brachial plexus injuries with clavicle fracture and 26 without clavicle fracture. The analysed risk factors for clavicle fracture concurrent with brachial plexus injury were gestational diabetes, labour induction and augmentation, prolonged second

OBJECT The aim of this study was to determine the volume and timing of referrals for obstetrical brachial plexus injury (OBPI) to multidisciplinary centers in a national demographic sample. Secondarily, we aimed to measure the incidence and risk factors for OBPI in the sample. The burden of OBPI has not been investigated in a publicly funded system, and the timing and volume of referrals to multidisciplinary centers are unknown. The incidence and risk factors for OBPI have not been established in Canada. METHODS This is a retrospective cohort study. The authors used a demographic sample of all

OBJECTIVE: To describe neonatal complications related to shoulder dystocia.
METHODS: This systematic evidence review is based on PubMed search, Cochrane library and experts' recommendations.
RESULTS: The risks of brachial plexus birth injury, clavicle and humeral fracture, perinatal asphyxia, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and perinatal mortality are increased after shoulder dystocia. The medical team should be able to provide neonatal resuscitation in the delivery room in case of perinatal asphyxia following shoulder dystocia, according to national and international guidelines. The initial

OBJECTIVES: To determine the available evidence to prevent and treat shoulder dystocia to attempt to decrease its related neonatal and maternal morbidity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PubMed database, the Cochrane Library and the recommendations from the French and foreign obstetrical societies or colleges have been consulted.
RESULTS: Shoulder dystocia, defined as a vaginal delivery that requires additional obstetric maneuvers to deliver the fetus after the head has delivered and gentle traction has failed, complicates 0.5-1 % of vaginal deliveries. Risks of brachial plexus birth injury (LE3)

INTRODUCTION: Fractures during the neonatal period are rare. Some fractures, especially long bones, may occur during birth. Moreover, neonates hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit have an increased risk of fractures for several reasons.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence and characterize fractures in newborns admitted in a tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with a diagnosis at discharge of one or more bone fractures from January 1996 to June 2013.
RESULTS: Eighty neo

INTRODUCTION: Birth injuries are common phenomenon. But commonly encountered birth injuries are clavicle fracture, humerus fractures and uncommonly femur fracture. Incidence of Distal humerus Epiphyseal injuries as birth injury are rare. As the first secondary centre around elbow-capitellum appears at 3-9 months, its radilological assessment of alignment with elbow or the radius shaft is not possible in neonates. It is difficult to differentiate elbow dislocation from epiphyseal injury in neonates.
CASE REPORT: Here we are reporting a case of lower end humerus epiphyseal injury, as birth inju

BACKGROUND: Dating fractures is critical in cases of suspected infant abuse. There are little scientific data to guide radiologists, and dating is generally based on personal experience and conventional wisdom.
OBJECTIVE: Since birth-related clavicular fractures are not immobilized and their age is known, we propose that an assessment of these injuries may serve as a guide for dating inflicted fractures in young infants, acknowledging that patterns observed in the clavicle may not be entirely generalizable to other bones injured in the setting of abuse.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the clinical risk factors and complications of shoulder dystocia today and to evaluate ultrasound methods predicting it.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, matched case-control study at a University Hospital with 5000 annual deliveries. The study population consisted of 152 deliveries complicated by shoulder dystocia over a period of 8.5 years (January 2004-June 2012) and 152 controls matched for gestational age and parity. The data was collected from the medical records of mothers and children and analyzed by conditional logistic regression. Incidences and odds ratios were c

BACKGROUND: The clavicle is the bone most frequently fractured during the delivery process.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of all births with clavicular fractures from January 2003 to December 2012. Risk factors for fracture were determined and then compared to the control group. The data were compared and analyzed with previous studies.
RESULTS: Three hundred and nineteen cases of clavicular fracture (0.41% of total live births, n = 77 543) were identified. Prior to discharge, 275 cases (86.2%) were detected, and 44 cases (13.8%) were not detected until after discharge. Physi

OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine neonatal morbidity associated with different maneuvers used among term patients who experience a shoulder dystocia.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all women who experienced a clinically diagnosed shoulder dystocia at term requiring obstetric maneuvers at a single tertiary care hospital from 2005 through 2008. We excluded women with major fetal anomaly, intrauterine death, multiple gestation, and preterm. Women exposed to Rubin maneuver, Wood's screw maneuver, or delivery of the posterior arm were compared to women delivered by McRobe

PURPOSE: To summarize and analyze the obstetric factors and medical care for neonatal clavicle fracture during delivery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 4,456 vaginal deliveries, only six newborns were found with a clavicle fracture in our hospital from October 2002 to October 2011.
RESULTS: Clinical findings showed that dystocia and improper midwifery manoeuvres are the two major reasons which lead to newborn clavicular fractures.
CONCLUSION: More attention should be paid to non-violent traction and proper treatment of shoulder dystocia.

OBJECTIVE: The ability to predict birth trauma (BT) based on the currently recognized risk factors is limited and there is little information regarding the short-term neonatal outcome following BT. We aimed to identify risk factors for BT and to evaluate the effect of BT on short-term neonatal outcome.
METHODS: A retrospective, cohort, case-control study of all cases of BT in a single tertiary center (1986-2009). The control group included the two subsequent full-term singleton neonates who did not experienced BT. Short-term neonatal outcome was compared between the groups including Apgar sco

Congenital pseudarthrosis of the clavicle is a rare clinical entity, first described in 1910. We report on a newborn baby girl who presented with a painless lump over mid-portion of right clavicle at her routine newborn examination, which was subsequently diagnosed as a congenital pseudarthrosis. Here we explore its pathogenesis, elaborate on its differential diagnoses in paediatric patients, and comment on its distinct radiological features.

BACKGROUND: The proper prenatal care for pregnant women is crucial to quickly identify risk factors for birth trauma.
OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors for neonatal birth trauma.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Case-control study that included a patient in the case group for every two controls. The following risk factors were identified: cephalopelvic disproportion, macrosomia, use of forceps, precipitated or prolonged labor, malpresentation, and the most common types of birth trauma. We used descriptive statistics and odds ratios.
RESULTS: Statistically significant risk factors for birth trauma wer

The purposes of this review were to describe deliveries complicated by shoulder dystocia (SD) at three tertiary centers and discern the differences between SD with and without brachial plexus injury (BPI). The inclusion criteria for this multicenter, retrospective study were singletons, delivered vaginally with SD. To discern the risk factors for SD with and without injury, a case (SD and BPI) versus control (3 SD without injury at the same institution) design was used. Multiple linear regression was employed. Over a 7-year period, among 46,637 vaginal deliveries, SD occurred in 1,177 cases (2

Birth injuries are frequently seen in newborn infants. Clavicular fractures are the most commonly encountered bony injuries seen in clinical practice. The incidence of clavicle fracture ranges from 0.35 per cent to 2.9 per cent of births and remains undetected at the time of discharge from hospital in up to 40 per cent of cases. Clinical suspicion of fractured clavicle may be raised from history (shoulder dystocia) or clinical examination (spongy feeling or crepitus on palpation). This should be confirmed with imaging studies. Parents should have the diagnosis explained and be reassured that h

The frequency of shoulder dystocia in different reports has varied, ranging 0.2-3% of all vaginal deliveries. Once a shoulder dystocia occurs, even if all actions are appropriately taken, there is an increased frequency of complications, including third- or fourth-degree perineal lacerations, postpartum hemorrhage, and neonatal brachial plexus palsies. Health care providers have a poor ability to predict shoulder dystocia for most patients and there remains no commonly accepted model to accurately predict this obstetric emergency. Consequently, optimal management of shoulder dystocia requires
