Limits to fragmented habitat viability: case study of owl monkeys in a 0.5 ha natural forest island.

Our understanding of the viability of primates in anthropogenically fragmented habitats is undermined by the long timeframes for the effects of fragmentation to manifest. Studying primates in natural forest islands can better reveal the limits to habitat viability in the face of fragmentation. We present a study of a group of Azara's owl monkeys (Aotus azarae) occupying a 0.53 ha forest "island", the smallest such forest island and territory ever documented for the genus Aotus. We radio collared one individual and then, for ten months, collected ecological and behavioural data on the island an

Burden of 292 causes of death and life expectancy decomposition in Iran, 1990-2023: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Better evaluation of the contribution of the main diseases, injuries, and risk factors for mortality and life expectancy is crucial for more efficient policy making at the national and subnational levels in Iran. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of emerging causes of mortality on health, specifically COVID-19, which can help policy makers implement preventive measures in similar situations. METHODS: In this systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023, we present estimates of cause-specific mortality at the national

Neonatal Oculomotor, Optomotor, Vestibulo-ocular, Protective Blink, and Pupillary Light Reflexes Following Perinatal Brain Trauma: Implications for Early Visual Rehabilitation in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Concussion.

Perinatal brain trauma, including hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and mechanical injury during pregnancy, labor, or delivery, represents an early-acquired brain injury that disrupts the identical subcortical, brainstem, cerebellar, and emerging cortical visual, oculomotor, and vestibulo-ocular pathways commonly impaired in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) or concussion. This topical review examines five key neonatal reflexes: optomotor (optokinetic nystagmus [OKN], head-turning, fix-and-follow), oculomotor (reflexive saccades, doll's eye), vestibulo-ocular (VOR), pupillary light (PLR includi

Causes of death across the life course in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN): a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: The drivers of mortality and their associated risk factors evolve throughout the course of life. Understanding these transitions is essential for effective, equitable, and age-appropriate health interventions. METHODS: As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023, we examined life expectancy and the probability of death from birth to age 70 years (70q0) from 1990 to 2023 for each Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member state. In addition, we assessed causes of death and risk factor by age and sex across different life stages.

The role of noninfectious comorbidities in the association between severe infections and risk of dementia in Finland: A nationwide registry study.

BACKGROUND: Severe infections have been linked to an increased risk of dementia, but both conditions often coexist with other illnesses that may confound this association. Using nationwide Finnish health registry data, we examined the role of noninfectious mental and physical illnesses in the association between severe infections and dementia. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This register-based study included 62,555 individuals aged 65 or older in Finland in 2016 who were diagnosed with late-onset dementia between 2017 and 2020 and 312,772 dementia-free controls matched for year of birth, sex, and the

Updates in Biliary Atresia: Aetiology, Diagnosis and Surgery.

Biliary atresia (BA) is an obliterative disease of the bile ducts affecting between 1 in 10,000-20,000 infants with a predominance in Asian countries. It is clinically heterogeneous with a number of distinct variants (e.g., isolated, Biliary Atresia Splenic Malformation syndrome, Cat-eye syndrome, cystic BA, and CMV-associated BA). Facts about its aetiology are hard to encounter but might include genetic, developmental, exposure to an environmental toxin, or perinatal virus infection. However, the cholestatic injury triggers an intrahepatic fibrotic process beginning at birth and culminating i

Erb's Palsy: Visual Diagnosis in Art before Medical History?

UNLABELLED: <p>Background: Close observation is fundamental to both art and medicine, although both disciplines use it in different ways. As doctors need to practice observation of their patients every day, visual arts are increasingly used for the development of observational skills within the medical curriculum. This is particularly useful for students and residents in surgery or in specializations with a surgical component such as gynecology and obstetrics, where close observation of anatomical structures and radiological imaging is essential in providing quality care. Conversely, artists -

VEGF-D Protects the Lung in Neonatal Hyperoxia-induced Lung Injury.

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a serious lung disease that affects premature infants born with developmentally immature lungs. Supplemental oxygen, although a lifesaving treatment, provokes inflammation and oxidative stress, causing microvasculature injury, pulmonary edema, and abnormal lung development. Impaired pulmonary vascular development is implicated in BPD; however, the role of the lymphatics is poorly understood. Studies used an established animal model, in which mice were exposed on the day of birth for 14 days to 75% oxygen to induce hallmark features of BPD, including pulmonar

Global Burden of Eye Injuries in Children and Adolescents, 1990 to 2021: A Systematic Analysis From the Global Burden of Disease Study.

PURPOSE: Eye injuries are a leading cause of monocular vision impairment and disability in children and adolescents. Unlike adults, eye injuries in children exhibit significant age specificity, with worse visual outcomes due to immature vision, the risk of long-term damage, and amblyopia. However, research on the global distribution and trends of eye injury burdens in this population is limited. DESIGN: Retrospective population-based trend study. METHODS: This study analyzes the burden of eye injuries among children and adolescents aged 0 to 19 years globally, regionally, and nationally, usi

Tonabersat Inhibits Retinal Inflammation After Hypoxia-Ischemia in the Neonatal Rat.

Perinatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a condition resulting from oxygen deprivation around the time of birth and may be associated with death, brain damage, and disability. Alongside this, studies have shown that HIE may result in visual impairment. Previously, this was thought to be due to damage to the visual pathways in the brain, in a condition known as cerebral visual impairment. However, recent studies suggest that direct injury to the retina may occur after HIE. Of note, the nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich-containing family, and pyrin domain-containing-3 (NLRP3) inf

Experimental procedure on a royal skull base.

In 1403, in the battle of Shrewsbury, young Prince Henry, the future Henry V of England (1387-1422), was seriously wounded by an arrow that struck him under his left eye and reached the base of his skull. That he survived was thanks to John Bradmore (date of birth unknown; died 1412), a surgeon and also a metalworker, who designed an original instrument enabling progressive extraction of the arrowhead. He then applied irrigation with wine, honey dressings and a resinous ointment, which achieved healing in 20 days. This story is an illustration of the creativity and experimental attitude at the

Premature vision drives aberrant development of response properties in primary visual cortex.

Development of the mammalian visual system is thought to proceed in two stages. In the first stage, before birth in primates and before eye opening in altricial mammals, spontaneous activity generated by the retina and cortex shapes visual brain circuits in an activity-dependent but experience-independent manner. In the second stage, visual activity generated by sensory experience refines receptive fields. Here, we investigated the consequences of altering this sequence of events by prematurely opening one or both eyes of ferrets and examining visual receptive fields in monocular cortex after

Ototoxicity-induced c-Fos activation underlies the regenerative capacity of the vestibular sensory epithelia.

The mammalian inner ear exhibits a striking dichotomy in regenerative capacity: while vestibular hair cells retain limited ability to regenerate, cochlear hair cells permanently lose this potential after birth. Exploiting this disparity, we employed single-cell comparative transcriptomics combined with lineage tracing to identify c-Fos as a critical early responder selectively activated in the vestibular epithelium following ototoxic injury. Transcriptomic and chromatin profiling revealed that c-Fos initiates regenerative reprogramming by transcriptionally priming Atoh1, the master regulator o

Global age-sex-specific all-cause mortality and life expectancy estimates for 204 countries and territories and 660 subnational locations, 1950-2023: a demographic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive, comparable, and timely estimates of demographic metrics-including life expectancy and age-specific mortality-are essential for evaluating, understanding, and addressing trends in population health. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of timely and all-cause mortality estimates for being able to respond to changing trends in health outcomes, showing a strong need for demographic analysis tools that can produce all-cause mortality estimates more rapidly with more readily available all-age vital registration (VR) data. Weight development from childhood to motherhood-embodied experiences in women with pre-pregnancy obesity: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Pre-pregnancy obesity increases the risk of perinatal complications. Post-pregnancy is a time of preparation for the next pregnancy and lifestyle advice in antenatal care and postpartum follow-up is therefore recommended. However, behavioral changes are difficult to achieve, and a better understanding of pregnant women's perspectives and experiences of pre-pregnancy weight development is crucial. METHODS: We used a qualitative design and conducted semi-structured interviews with 14 women in Norway with pre-pregnancy obesity 3-12 months postpartum. Data were analyzed using thematic

Congenital Malformations of the Eye: A Pictorial Review and Clinico-Radiological Correlations.

Congenital malformations of the eye represent a wide and heterogeneous spectrum of abnormalities that may be part of a complex syndrome or be isolated. Ocular malformation severity depends on the timing of the causative event during eye formation, ranging from the complete absence of the eye if injury occurs during the first weeks of gestation, to subtle abnormalities if the cause occurs later on. Knowledge of ocular malformations is crucial to performing a tailored imaging protocol and correctly reporting imaging findings. Together with the ophthalmologic evaluation, imaging may help frame oc
