Aim To determine a prognostic value of cerebral blood flow parameters for the development of neurological sequelae in term neonates with hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE). Methods We reviewed medical records of 47 term neonates with HIE who survived until the age of 12 months of life. According to the Sarnat and Sarnat clinical score, neonates were divided into 3 groups: mild HIE, moderate HIE and severe HIE. All included neonates had the colour Doppler brain sonography performed in the first 24 hours of life. The neurological assessment was done at the age of 12 months of life by using t

Proteinuria during pregnancy is closely related to the occurrence of adverse pregnancy outcomes. One hundred and forty-two women with proteinuria during pregnancy and followed between January 2018 and December 2020 were evaluated. Based on the 24-h proteinuria value, they were divided as mild (n = 76, 300-1000 mg/day), moderate (n = 39, 1000-3500 mg/day) and severe (n = 27, >3500 mg/day) proteinuria. The rates of prematurity, low birth weight and neonatal asphyxia were significantly higher in the severe proteinuria group than in the mild and moderate groups, while the rates of foetal growth re

BACKGROUND: Failed induction of labor continues to be a public health challenge throughout the world. This failed induction of labor is associated with a higher rate of maternal and fetal morbidity because it increases the unwanted effect of emergency cesarean section. It is also associated with an increased risk of numerous adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes such as uterine rupture, nonreassuring fetal heart rate tracing, postpartum hemorrhage, stillbirth, and severe birth asphyxia. Thus, this study was aimed to assess the failed induction of labor and associated factors in the Adama Hos

AIM: Death in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) commonly follows a decision to withdraw or limit life-sustaining treatment. Advances in medicine have changed the nature of life-sustaining interventions available and the potential prognosis for many newborn conditions. We aimed to assess changes in causes of death and end-of-life care over nearly four decades.
METHODS: A retrospective review of infants dying in the NICU was performed (2017-2020) and compared with previous audits performed in the same centre (1985-1987 and 1999-2001). Diagnoses at death were recorded for each infant as we

BACKGROUND: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is one of the most common adverse consequence of premature delivery and the most common chronic lung disease in infants. BPD is associated with long-term lung diseases and neurodevelopmental disorders that can persist into the adulthood. The adverse consequences caused by severe BPD are more serious. However, there were few studies on the risk factors for severe BPD.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study of preterm infants born less than 32-week gestational age (GA) and diagnosed with BPD.
RESULTS: A total of 250 preterm infants with a diagnosis

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is an established intervention to improve the outcome of neonates with moderate-to-severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy resulting from perinatal asphyxia. Despite this beneficial effect, TH may further affect drug elimination pathways such as the glomerular filtration rate.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of TH in addition to asphyxia on mannitol clearance as a surrogate for the glomerular filtration rate.
METHODS: The effect of asphyxia and TH (mild vs moderate/severe) on mannitol clearance was assessed using a po

INTRODUCTION: Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy is a neurological condition occurring immediately after birth following a perinatal asphytic episode. Therapeutic hypothermia is a safe and effective intervention to reduce mortality and major disability in survivors. In Latin America, perinatal asphyxia is a major problem, but no data are available characterizing its current situation in the region or the impact of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy on its management.
OBJECTIVE: Understand the prevalence, mortality and use of therapeutic hypothermia in newborns at ≥36 weeks gestational age with hypo

BACKGROUND: Neonatal encephalopathy due to acute perinatal asphyxia is a major cause of perinatal brain damage. Moderate to severe neonatal encephalopathy is associated with high mortality and morbidity rates. However, the neurodevelopmental outcomes in neonates with mild neonatal encephalopathy are unclear. The primary aim of this single-center observational study was to assess the short-term outcomes in term neonates with mild neonatal encephalopathy due to perinatal asphyxia. A secondary aim was to identify predictors of poor prognosis by identifying the characteristics of these infants acc

BACKGROUND: S100B and cardiac troponin T (c-TnT) are relevant biomarkers at birth of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and myocardial ischemia secondary to metabolic acidosis during labor, respectively. The purpose was to assess in-utero changes in S100B and c-TnT levels in an experimental model of labor-like acidosis.
METHODS: Repeated umbilical cord occlusions (UCOs) in ten experiments were performed in mild (phase A, 1 UCO/5 mn), moderate (phase B, 1 UCO/3 mn), and severe (phase C, 1 UCO/2 mn) period. The experiments were stopped if arterial pH reached 6.90.
RESULTS: UCOs resulted in

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) typically manifests in the neonatal period. The degree of hypoxia following intrapartum asphyxia determines the structural changes in the brain, which can cause functional deficits in the affected child leading to developmental deficits and recurrent seizures. Management requires physical therapy, occupational therapy, and anti-seizure medications. We present a rare case of an 11-year-old female with a past medical history of epilepsy and cerebral atrophy secondary to hypoxic injury at birth. The patient presented to the hospital following a witnessed seiz

AIM: Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) is associated with an increased risk of multi-organ injury. The lack of standardised definitions for multi-organ dysfunction in NE hinders accurate quantification of these complications.
METHODS: A simple multi-organ dysfunction in neonatal encephalopathy scoring (MODE) system was created to include the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, haematological and neurological systems with a maximum score of 15. The MODE score was then compared with the grade of NE, Bayley Scales of Infant Development (Bayley-III) at 2 years of age and mortality. The Bayl

INTRODUCTION: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is defined as a neurological complication that results from perinatal asphyxia. Previous studies had investigated various markers to early detect HIE; however, these markers appeared to have several drawbacks, especially in resource-limited settings.
AIM: This study aimed at evaluating the predictive value of the salivary lactate dehydrogenase level as a potential predictor of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy for newborns.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 30 neonates with HIE due to perinatal asphyxia and 30 healthy newborns that serve as
