Incidence, Etiologies, and Outcomes of Respiratory Distress in Newborns Admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a Tertiary Care Teaching Hospital in Rural South-West Bihar.

Background One of the most frequent reasons for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) hospitalization is respiratory distress, which causes significant early neonatal morbidity and mortality, especially in resource-constrained environments. Etiology and related risk factors need to be identified early to enhance the outcome of neonates. The aim of the study was to establish the prevalence, etiology, and prognosis of respiratory distress in infants admitted to the NICU of a tertiary care teaching hospital in rural South-West Bihar. Methods This is a prospective observational study, which was carr

Evaluation of Preventive Antibiotic Regimens for Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes: Efficacy and Safety of Triple Therapy versus Cephalosporin Monotherapy.

PURPOSE: Controversy remains regarding the optimal prophylactic antibiotic regimen for preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). This study compared the efficacy and benefits of cephalosporin monotherapy with a triple-therapy regimen comprising a cephalosporin, azithromycin, and clindamycin. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a single-center cohort study at a tertiary hospital in China from January 2024 to June 2025, prospectively enrolling pregnant women receiving triple therapy and retrospectively selecting those receiving cephalosporin monotherapy as controls. Maternal analyses inclu

Hairy Polyp Causing Infant Respiratory Distress: A Case Report.

We present the case of a newborn who presented in respiratory distress with a hairy polyp that was larger than 3 cm arising from the oropharynx. Whilst performing emergency intubation, an oropharyngeal mass was detected causing airway obstruction in association with a cleft palate. The characteristics and extent of the lesion were confirmed through imaging. Surgical removal was undertaken using coblation. Histology confirmed a 34 x 22 x 16 mm lesion consisting of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium with pilosebaceous units and a well-formed tooth bell seen within the specimen. The child

Incidence of mortality and its predictors among low birth weight neonates in Ethiopia: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight neonates are twentyfold at risk of death. Notably, it is a major public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. Despite the presence of several primary studies on this issue in Ethiopia, the study findings are inconsistent. Hence, this review aimed to assess the pooled incidence and proportion of mortality and predictors among low birth weight neonates. METHOD: A search of articles from databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Global Index Medicus, and HINAR), and other sources (Google, Google Scholar) were done. All observational studies that assess mortality

An Idiopathic Hepatic Hematoma Presenting in the Neonatal Period.

Hepatic hematoma in newborns is an extremely rare condition, usually secondary to birth trauma or a vascular malformation. Clinically, it is often asymptomatic but can lead to serious complications, including internal bleeding and even signs of liver failure. We report an unusual case of intraparenchymal hepatic hematoma of undetermined etiology in a newborn, without associated birth trauma. This is a male newborn, born at term, admitted on the third day of life for respiratory distress associated with pallor of the skin and mucous membranes and abdominal distension with scrotal and inguinal e

[SSRI/SNRI Treatment During Preganancy and It´s Effects on Newborns].

INTRODUCTION: In the past decade, the use of antidepressants in Iceland has increased rapidly. Given their widespread use, it is important to assess potential effects of SSRI/SNRI exposure during pregnancy on the newborn. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of SSRI/SNRI use at the time of delivery, the frequency of neonatal support or resuscitation, monitoring or admissions to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and which clinical signs may possibly be linked to SSRI/SNRI exposure during pregnancy. METHODS: This was a retrospective comparative study, including all infants

Drying Very Preterm Infants Before Plastic Wrapping at Birth: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Despite continuous improvements in neonatal resuscitation and stabilization in the last decades, thermal management immediately after birth remains an unresolved issue in preterm infants. OBJECTIVE: To compare 2 strategies of thermal management (plastic wrapping with or without drying) for preventing heat loss at birth in very preterm infants. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This multicenter, unblinded, randomized clinical trial was conducted among very preterm infants (birth weight <1500 g and/or gestational age ≤30 weeks 6 days) at 21 tertiary care hospitals in Italy from Fe

Mendelian randomization analysis of labor anesthesia and adverse neonatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Despite the lack of data from randomized controlled trials, studies have indicated that labor anesthesia may be associated with neonatal asphyxia, neonatal respiratory distress and adverse neonatal neurological outcomes. Therefore, we performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis to explore the potential causal relationships between labor anesthesia methods and adverse neonatal outcomes. METHOD: We collected genome-wide association study (GWAS) data, including on spinal (n = 3,780), epidural (n = 3,970), and other labor anesthesia methods (n = 4,094), as well as neonatal

Early-Onset Dengue Mimicking Neonatal Sepsis in a Term Neonate: A Case Report.

Neonatal dengue is an underrecognized infection that can mimic neonatal sepsis, leading to diagnostic challenges, particularly in endemic regions and in the context of perinatal or household exposure. We report the case of a term male neonate, delivered by emergency cesarean section for abruptio placenta, who developed early respiratory distress, thrombocytopenia, and petechial rash shortly after birth. Initial management included respiratory support and empirical antibiotics for suspected sepsis; however, bacterial cultures remained negative. Dengue infection was confirmed by polymerase chain

Primary pulmonary hypoplasia masquerading as pneumonia in a preterm neonate and creating a diagnostic challenge: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypoplasia is a rare congenital lung disorder characterized by the incomplete development of lung tissue. This condition can be classified as primary or secondary to other congenital anomalies, with primary pulmonary hypoplasia being considerably rarer than the secondary form. Severe cases often manifest as respiratory failure in the immediate newborn period. While secondary pulmonary hypoplasia is often antenatally detected, primary cases-such as ours-may evade prenatal imaging, presenting as refractory neonatal respiratory distress. Secondary causes, such as oligohydram

Urinary Tract Infection Caused by Burkholderia cenocepacia in a Newborn: A Case Report.

Burkholderia cenocepacia (B. cenocepacia) is a strictly aerobic, nonfermenting, Gram-negative bacillus belonging to the Burkholderia cepacia complex. It is the most virulent and pathogenic species within this group. It poses a therapeutic challenge due to its intrinsic resistance to several commonly used antibiotics and the emergence of acquired resistance. It mainly causes respiratory infections in immunocompromised patients, particularly those with cystic fibrosis. We report a rare case of urinary tract infection caused by B. cenocepacia in a neonate admitted to the neonatal intensive care u

Obstetric Outcomes Following SARS-CoV-2 Infection Remote from Delivery: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) causes severe complications in 15% of patients, many of whom are pregnant. Most infected women continue their pregnancies until term even though severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) replicates in the decidua. OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection remote from delivery on obstetric outcomes. METHODS: Women diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed by polymerase chain reaction at least 14 days prior to delivery were enrolled prospectively and followed monthly until delivery. Their obstetric outcomes w

High-Frequency Oscillation vs Mechanical Ventilation for Neonatal Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Key clinical features of neonatal acute respiratory distress syndrome (NARDS) are broadly comparable to those observed in pediatric and adult ARDS; however, evidence is insufficient to recommend high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) or conventional mechanical ventilation (CMV) as the preferred first-line therapy. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether HFOV is superior to CMV in reducing bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and other neonatal adverse outcomes, including death, among preterm infants (≤34 weeks' gestational age) with NARDS. Interstitial pneumonia associated with equid gammaherpesvirus 5 infection in 2 neonatal foals, and a retrospective study in Hokkaido, Japan.

Various bacterial and viral pathogens have been identified in cases of interstitial pneumonia in foals within the first month of life. A potential association has been suggested between equid gammaherpesvirus 5 (EqGHV5, equine herpesvirus 5; family Orthoherpesviridae, taxon species Percavirus equidgamma5) and interstitial pneumonia in foals; however, direct histologic evidence has been limited. We examined 2 neonates-12-d- and 24-d-old-with acute respiratory distress and poor response to treatment. Postmortem examination revealed interstitial pneumonia with diffuse alveolar damage and intranuc

Prognosis of neonates receiving invasive mechanical ventilation in low-resource settings: a systematic review and prognostic meta-analysis.

Provision of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) in the neonatal intensive care has seen a steady rise in low-esource settings (LRS). However, outcomes among those exposed to IMV remain under-reported, with the current evidence base being restricted to single-centre observational studies, thus limiting comparative analyses and effective healthcare planning. This study aims to estimate the pooled proportion of mortality and morbidity among neonates exposed to IMV in low-resource settings. Medline, Embase, and CENTRAL were searched until 22 August 2025. Randomised and non-randomised studies we
