Causes of mortality in an African city.

Registered deaths from the vital statistics registration system of Lagos City, a system that was judged to be 60% complete, were analysed for the year 1977. Nearly 40% of total registered deaths were from infections, parasitic diseases and motor vehicle accidents. Of the reported deaths, 17.3% were from ill-defined conditions. Deaths from neoplasms, diseases of the nervous and sense organs, diseases of the digestive and genitourinary systems as well as those from congenital anomalies are relatively less frequent. Maternal mortality appears to be very high. The age pattern of mortality is diffe

Pneumocystis pneumonia: a plague of the immunosuppressed.

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonitis is a diffuse bilateral alveolopathy encountered in the immunocompromised host with cancer, a congenital immune deficiency disorder, an organ transplant, severe protein-energy malnutrition or recipients of immunosuppressive therapy for other conditions. The onset is abrupt with fever and tachypnea. No rales are heard and the roentgenogram reveals a diffuse alveolar disease. Once the pneumonitis is evident, the infection is usually fatal if no treatment is given. The diagnosis is best established by the demonstration of the causative organism in specimens obtaine

Attempted transmission of Toxoplasma gondii infection from pregnant cats to their kittens.

Sixteen 1- to 7-week-old pregnant specific-pathogen free cats were inoculated orally with Toxoplasma gondii cysts. Fetuses and neonatal kittens were examined for toxoplasma infection by inoculating suspensions of their tissues into mice. Toxoplasma gondii was not isolated from 23 fetuses and 16 newborn kittens from 13 queens. Six (3 litters) of the 15 kittens from the 3 remaining queens were killed on the day of or a day after birth, and the remaining 9 kittens were housed with their mothers for 7 to 33 days. None of the 9 kittens from the 2 litters examined between 0 and 33 days of age was in

Primary peritonitis in infancy and childhood.

Primary peritonitis, rarely diagnosed preoperatively, is an uncommon disease accounting for 2.1% of all pediatric abdominal emergencies. It is often associated with urinary or hepatic pathology, the former the source of the infecting organism in the majority of cases, and presents with characteristic symptoms depending upon whether it occurs in infancy or childhood. The symptoms and signs which allow for a positive prospective diagnosis are illustrated by comparing this disease to those entities with which it is most often confused, e.g. diffuse peritonitis of other etiologies, and include a s

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Problems in diagnosis and therapy in 24 cases.

Twenty-four instances of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia were recognized in 23 patients at the Stanford University Hospitals between 1962 and 1970. The affected persons could be broadly characterized as "compromised" hosts. All but one were receiving immunosuppressive drug therapy for such underlying disease as hematopoietic malignant disease, collagen vascular disorder, and organ transplant rejection. The one patient not receiving immunosuppressant medication had congenital dysgammaglobulinemia and suffered two discrete bouts of pneumocystis pneumonia. Most of the patients were concomitantly i

ON THE OCCURRENCE OF CATALASE IN HUMAN TISSUES AND ITS VARIATIONS IN DISEASES.

1. In work along this line it is most important to have a simple method of determining the catalytic activity of tissues. The method must be such that several observations can be made during a single experiment, so that a better idea can be obtained of the velocity of the reaction at various intervals. 2. The catalytic activity of human tissues varies greatly in diseases. A. Nephritis.-The kidney always shows the most marked reduction although the other tissues examined, blood, lung, liver, spleen, likewise show decrease in their power of decomposing hydrogen peroxide. This reduction varies di
