[What is the cost of neonatal respiratory distress for the Brazilian Unified National Health System? A national analysis of direct costs, regional distribution, and temporal variation].

Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome shows high clinical severity and economic burden for the Brazilian Unified National Health System. This study estimated the direct costs of hospitalizations from 2018 to 2021 and described their distribution by diagnosis, region, and period. A cost-of-disease study with a top-down approach and authorizations for hospitalization of newborns aged from 0 to 27 days was carried out. Values were updated to December 2025 and standardized per 1,000 live births. The period included 1,449,694 neonatal hospitalizations, of which 227,130 (15.7%) were due to respirat

Clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of diseases caused by mercury overexposure: a systematic review of case reports and case series.

BACKGROUND: Mercury poisoning remains a serious public health issue due to its multiple exposure routes and diverse clinical presentations. However, existing clinical evidence is fragmented, especially regarding real-world case data. This study addresses the gap by systematically reviewing global case reports to analyze clinical features, diagnosis, and treatments, thereby offering more robust evidence for clinical practice. METHODS: Case reports of diseases caused by accidental mercury exposure, published from January 1950 to April 2025, were identified through a comprehensive search of thre

Congenital Upper Airway Malformations and Malacia in Infancy: Population-Based Prevalence, Sex Differences, and Trends in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Congenital upper airway malformations and malacia are important causes of respiratory morbidity in early infancy, yet population-based epidemiological data remain scarce, particularly in Latin America. Most available estimates derive from single-centre cohorts, limiting generalizability and health system planning. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide, retrospective, population-based study using Colombia's administrative healthcare database (RIPS). We identified healthcare encounters coded with ICD-10 diagnoses corresponding to congenital upper airway malformations and malacia among

Late-Diagnosed Cystic Fibrosis in an Octogenarian With an Atypical Phenotype of Pancreatic Sufficiency and Preserved Pulmonary Function.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) was historically described as a severe childhood disease associated with pancreatic destruction, malnutrition, recurrent respiratory infection, and early mortality. Advances in sweat chloride testing, cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene discovery, newborn screening, multidisciplinary care, and CFTR modulator therapy have transformed the natural history of the disease. However, CF remains clinically heterogeneous, and patients with residual CFTR function may present later in life with chronic bronchiectasis, sinus disease, atypical respiratory in

Stillbirth and neonatal mortality in Jordan: findings from Jordan stillbirths and neonatal deaths surveillance system.

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth and neonatal mortality declined significantly in high- and some middle-income countries since 2000 because of the significant improvements in obstetric and neonatal care. Yet, stillbirth and neonatal mortality rates remain high in many low- and middle-income countries. The main reason for low progress in reducing such stillbirths and neonatal deaths in Jordan is the scarcity of data on causes and contributing factors leading to these deaths. This study aimed to determine the rates, causes, and risk factors of stillbirth and neonatal mortality in Jordan. METHODS: An elec

Gestational and neonatal outcomes of women with partial Dunnigan lipodystrophy.

INTRODUCTION: Lipodystrophies are a group of disorders characterized by selective and variable loss of adipose tissue, which can result in an increased risk of insulin resistance and its associated complications. Women with lipodystrophy often have a high frequency of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and may experience gynecological and obstetric complications. The objective of this study was to describe the gestational outcomes of patients with familial partial lipodystrophy type 2 (FPLD2) at a reference center with the aim of improving the understanding and management of pregnant women affec

Nontuberculous mycobacterial infections in a Danish region between 2011 and 2021: evaluation of trends in diagnostic codes.

INTRODUCTION: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are emerging as human pathogens at increasing rates. In Denmark, few studies of NTM exist, but these have not been able to confirm an increasing trend. Existing studies have not utilised clinical data or investigated geographical variations. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of patients with an ICD-10 diagnostic code of NTM infection in a Danish region, Central Denmark Region, between 2011 and 2021. Incidence rates per 100,000 citizens were calculated using data from Statistics Denmark. A Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was computed

Verbal autopsy analysis of childhood deaths in rural Gambia.

BACKGROUND: In low-resource settings, it is challenging to ascertain the burden and causes of under-5 mortality as many deaths occur outside health facilities. We aimed to determine the causes of childhood deaths in rural Gambia using verbal autopsies (VA). METHODOLOGY: We used WHO VA questionnaires to conduct VAs for deaths under-5 years of age in the Basse and Fuladu West Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems (HDSS) in rural Gambia between September 01, 2019, and December 31, 2021. Using a standardized cause of death list, two physicians assigned causes of death and discordant diagnos

Maternal respiratory viral infections during pregnancy and offspring's neurodevelopmental outcomes: A systematic review.

Maternal infections during pregnancy, as cytomegalovirus and zika, have been consistently associated with severe newborn neurodevelopmental conditions, mainly related to vertical transmission and congenital infection. However, little is known about the neurodevelopmental consequences of maternal respiratory viral infections, which are the most prevalent infections during pregnancy. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has increased the interest in understanding the consequences of infections in offspring's development. This systematic review explores whether maternal gestational viral respiratory infe

Causes of death in children with congenital Zika syndrome in Brazil, 2015 to 2018: A nationwide record linkage study.

BACKGROUND: Children with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) have severe damage to the peripheral and central nervous system (CNS), greatly increasing the risk of death. However, there is no information on the sequence of the underlying, intermediate, immediate, and contributing causes of deaths among these children. The aims of this study are describe the sequence of events leading to death of children with CZS up to 36 months of age and their probability of dying from a given cause, 2015 to 2018. METHODS AND FINDINGS: In a population-based study, we linked administrative data on live births, de

Hospitalisation patterns among children exposed to childhood adversity: a population-based cohort study of half a million children.

BACKGROUND: Children who are exposed to adversities might be more susceptible to disease development during childhood and in later life due to impaired physiological and mental development. To explore this hypothesis, we assessed hospitalisation patterns through childhood and into adult life among those exposed to different trajectories of adversities during childhood. METHODS: For this population-based cohort study, we used annually updated data from Danish nationwide registers covering more than half a million children (aged 0-15 years) born between 1994 and 2001. Children who were alive an

Adverse drug reactions of leukotriene receptor antagonists in children with asthma: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is the most common chronic condition of childhood. Leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs) are included in international guidelines for children and young people (CYP), but there have been highly publicised concerns about potential adverse effects. The aim was to identify and understand the reported frequency of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) attributed to LTRAs in CYP with asthma. METHODS: Embase, MEDLINE, PubMed and CINAHL were searched up to October 2020. Reference lists of eligible papers were manually screened. Eligible studies identified adverse events attributed to a

SARS-CoV-2 Infection and C-Section: A Prospective Observational Study.

Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic. In addition to unfavorable perinatal outcomes, there has been an increase in obstetric interventions. With this study, we aimed to clarify the reasons, using Robson's classification model, and risk factors for cesarean section (C-section) in SARS-CoV-2-infected mothers and their perinatal results. This was a prospective observational study that was carried out in 79 hospitals (Spanish Obstetric Emergency Group) with a cohort of 1704 SARS-CoV-2 PCR-positive pregnant women tha

Maternal and perinatal outcomes with COVID-19: A systematic review of 108 pregnancies.

INTRODUCTION: The pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has exposed vulnerable populations to an unprecedented global health crisis. The knowledge gained from previous human coronavirus outbreaks suggests that pregnant women and their fetuses are particularly susceptible to poor outcomes. The objective of this study was to summarize the clinical manifestations and maternal and perinatal outcomes of COVID-19 during pregnancy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We searched databases for all case reports and series from 12 February to 4 April 2020. Multiple terms
