AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The present study was under taken to determine the spectrum, clinical profile and outcome of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) admitted to a tertiary care hospital.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective, observational hospital based study conducted during January 2006 to December 2006. Out of 14461 admissions, 84 were cases of CHD. Only patients with echocardiographic proof of CHD were included in the study. Detailed clinical and laboratory findings and outcome of all cases were noted in pre-structured formats. Data were entered in MS-excel. Data was a

OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiological and other characteristics of emergency department (ED) presentations diagnosed with acute upper respiratory infection (URI).
DESIGN AND SETTING: A retrospective study of patients given an ED diagnosis of acute URI from July 2000 to July 2003 at any of the four metropolitan teaching hospitals in Perth, Western Australia.
RESULTS: Acute URI accounted for 3.6% (95% CI, 3.5-3.7) of ED presentations, and 80.7% (95% CI, 80.1-81.3) of these were aged less than 15 years. The most common diagnosis was acute upper respiratory infections of multiple and unspec

OBJECTIVE: A new rotavirus vaccine may be licensed in the United States in early 2006. Estimates of the burden of severe rotavirus disease, particularly hospitalizations, will help evaluate the potential benefits of a national rotavirus immunization program.
DESIGN: The Kids' Inpatient Database, a robust sample of 10% of the uncomplicated births and 80% of other pediatric discharges was used to estimate the number and rate of diarrhea- and rotavirus-associated hospitalizations among US children <5 years of age in 1997 and 2000.
RESULTS: In 1997 and 2000, diarrhea was coded in 13% of all chil

BACKGROUND: There is little information about the incidence of anaphylaxis from all causes.
OBJECTIVE: The objects of this study were (1) to estimate the incidence of anaphylaxis; (2) to explore the range of diagnoses attributed to an anaphylactic episode; and (3) to describe the clinical features of anaphylaxis.
METHODS: The study population consisted of children and adolescents enrolled at a health maintenance organization. We identified potential episodes of anaphylaxis occurring between 1991 and 1997 from automated databases and reviewed the medical record to confirm the diagnosis. We re

Estimates of the number of hospitalizations attributable to specific pathogens are required to predict the potential impact of vaccination. All hospital admissions for lower respiratory tract infection (LRI) in children < 5 years in England in 1995-8 were reviewed. Most admissions (76.8%) were not associated with specific organisms. Seasonality in pathogens that cause bronchiolitis and pneumonia was used to predict the proportion of cases with unspecified aetiology attributable to different organisms using multiple linear regression. Of 12,298 admissions for LRI, 17.5% were due to RSV infectio

Using a rat model, several laboratories have demonstrated long-term effects of Caesarean section (C-section) birth or of global hypoxia during C-section birth on a variety of central nervous system (CNS) parameters. These studies used C-section delivery from rapidly decapitated dams, to avoid confounding anesthetic effects, or from dams anesthetized with halothane or ether under unspecified conditions. Systemic oxygenation or cerebral energy metabolites in the pups at birth have not been systematically measured in this model. To develop and characterize a C-section model with relevance to the

Several recent trends in the vital statistics of the United States continued in 1996, including an increase in life expectancy and declines in infant mortality, births to teenage mothers, age-adjusted death rates, and death rates for children and adolescents. In 1996, there were an estimated 3 914 953 births in the United States. The preliminary birth rate remained unchanged at 14.8 births per 1000 population, and the fertility rate, births per 1000 women 15 to 44 years of age, was essentially the same at 65.7. Fertility rates rose slightly for most racial and ethnic groups except black women,

Causes of infant deaths were analyzed from the linked vital records of 1988 for the District of Columbia. According to a new cause-of-death classification, 57% of the deaths were attributed to "prematurity and related conditions," as compared with only 31% due to "disorders relating to short gestation and unspecified low birthweight" and respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in the three-digit ICD-9 classification. Two thirds of infant deaths were "preventable." However, 92% of these occurred to infants weighing less than 1500 g. Not only was a greater proportion of black deaths (71%) preventabl

The National Hospital Discharge Survey was used to evaluate the trends in asthma hospitalizations among children under International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM): 1979 to 1987. During this period, asthma hospitalizations among children aged 0 to 17 years increased 4.5% per annum (95% confidence interval [Cl], 2% to 7.1%). The increase was largest among 0 to 4 year olds, 5.0% per annum (95% Cl, 3.4% to 6.7%), vs 2.9% per annum (95% Cl, -0.3% to 6.2%) observed among 5 to 17 year olds. Among children aged 0 to 4 years, blacks had approximately 1.8 t
