The brains of 200 patients who died with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) from Berlin were examined retrospectively. This study was specifically intended to evaluate and document the prevalence of neuropathologic abnormalities, establishing the frequency of the various types of structural lesions, their combinations, their relative incidence, and the risk factors involved in different age groups. The data were compared and contrasted with the findings reported from other parts of the world and other German cities. It was found that the mean age of this group of patients was 41.4 years

Eleven patients with raised intracranial pressure caused by cerebral cryptococcosis developed complications requiring neurosurgical operations. A case of cryptococcosis simulating brain tumor was reviewed. A 66-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with chief complaint of vertigo, gait disturbance and dysarthria. Between January 1974 and June 1980, 85 cases of cryptococcosis were diagnosed in the University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The diagnosis was based on positive culture of the organism in 81 cases; the remaining four were diagnosed on histopathological findings. Cerebral cryptococcosis was the most common presentation and Chinese are particularly susceptible (72% of cases). The incidence of the disease is shown to be far greater than previously suspected. Association with compromised host status is uncommon (14%). The local literature is briefly reviewed and the findings discussed.

Herein is a histopathologic study of the temporal bone changes in three patients with fatal systemic fungal infections. All three patients were compromised hosts who failed to respond to adequate chemotherapy. Interestingly, one patient with cryptococcosis had a unilateral hearing loss as the sole manifestation of cerebral cryptococcosis. The most common histopathologic change consisted of a fungal infiltration of the nerves in the internal auditory canal, with moderate infiltration of the sense organs of the membranous labyrinth.

A case of cerebral cryptococcosis associated with pulmonary and bone lesions is described. While discussing some general data of the literature, the authors outline the rarity of granulomatous CNS Cryptococcosis. Cryptococcal infection of the brain as encountered in a tropical country is reviewed. The meningitic form is not uncommon and there has been, in the last decade, an apparent, if not real, rise in incidence in Malaysia as in Singapore.
