Group B Streptococcus (GBS), also known as Streptococcus agalactiae, is a gram-negative, beta-hemolytic facultative anaerobe that causes neonatal pneumonia and sepsis. The neoplastic epithelial cells in adults, especially those of squamous origin, can show special adhesive properties toward GBS, which tends to reside within these tumors. There are some animal and human studies proving this association. Here, we present a 64-year-old female patient who had lung carcinoma of mixed adeno and squamous origin found to have persistent GBS every time the bronchoscopy was done for tumor ablation or cr

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in neonates. Blood cultures are the gold standard in diagnosing neonatal sepsis; however, there are currently no consensus guidelines for blood culture collection in neonates and significant practice variation exists in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) globally.
OBJECTIVE: To examine current practices in obtaining blood cultures in the evaluation of neonatal sepsis in NICUs across Canada.
METHODS: A nine-item electronic survey was sent to each of the 29 level-3 NICUs in Canada, which are equipped to provide highly specia

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of empiric antibiotic protocols for peripartum bacteremia at a quaternary institution by describing incidence, microbial epidemiology, clinical source of infection, susceptibility patterns, and maternal and neonatal outcomes.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review of peripartum patients with positive blood cultures between 2010 and 2018.
RESULTS: The incidence of peripartum bacteremia was 0.3%. The most cultured organisms were Escherichia coli (51, 26.7%), Streptococcus spp. (52, 27.2%), and anaerobic spp. (35, 18.3%). Of the E. coli cases, 54.9% (28), 1

Fever is one of the most common diseases affecting humans, as it results from any disease or development and worsening of the disease for most people with widespread infections in the body. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate antibiotic resistance genes (CTX-M, Van A and Van B) of Enterococcus faecalis isolated from children with bacteremia by RT-PCR. A total of 200 children was enrolled in the study, 100 children with fever and 100 healthy children (not suffering from any problem); that is, they are a control group for the detection of antibiotic resistance genes (CTX-M, Van A and Van B)

Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is a gram-positive anaerobic bacillus. As an opportunistic pathogen, C. perfringens can colonize the intestine of infants, but highly pathogenic forms are uncommon in newborns. Sporadic cases of neonatal infection have been reported worldwide, but no case has yet been reported in Chinese neonates. We herein report the first Chinese neonate who developed severe intravascular hemolysis and necrotizing enterocolitis following C. perfringens septicemia. A 7-day-old full-term female newborn was admitted to our hospital with necrotizing enterocolitis. The pat

Introduction: Fusobacterium nucleatum is a gram-negative anaerobe, a constituent of the oral microflora, responsible for chronic periodontal diseases. Case Report: We describe a preterm infant with premature rupture of membranes at 23 weeks of gestational age due to F. nucleatum. The newborn died soon after birth. Placental histopathology showed severe necrotizing chorioamnionitis and funisitis with gram-negative bacilli. After autopsy, F. nucleatum was microbiologically isolated from the lung. The mother had dental hygiene 1 day before delivery, presenting mild and diffuse gingivitis. At admi

Background: Sepsis is a severe illness that can affect preterm, term, and young infants, and is often associated with negative cultures.Case report: A 2-year-old boy, with a previous partial colectomy after birth, presented with abdominal complaints and clinical sepsis. We empirically treated with meropenem and linezolid. Blood cultures were sterile, and fecal cultures demonstrated no pathogenes. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing identified Clostridium symbiosum from blood sample. The result supported the continued use of the antibiotic regimen. After 1 week, CRP and PCT returned to norma

Improving maternal and child health is a global priority. Although infection with Listeria monocytogenes (LM), a small facultative anaerobic, gram-positive motile bacillus is rare, when it infects the maternal-fetoplacental unit, it can result in adverse fetal sequelae such as chorioamnionitis, preterm labour, neonatal sepsis, meningitis and neonatal death. Pregnancy-associated listeriosis may present with a plethora of diverse, non-specific symptoms such as fever, influenza-like or gastrointestinal symptoms, premature contractions and preterm labour. It has a predilection for the second and t

OBJECTIVES: Clinical chorioamnionitis at term is considered the most common infection-related diagnosis in labor and delivery units worldwide. The syndrome affects 5-12% of all term pregnancies and is a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality as well as neonatal death and sepsis. The objectives of this study were to determine the (1) amniotic fluid microbiology using cultivation and molecular microbiologic techniques; (2) diagnostic accuracy of the clinical criteria used to identify patients with intra-amniotic infection; (3) relationship between acute inflammatory lesions of the pla

Sneathia is an emerging pathogen implicated in adverse reproductive and perinatal outcomes. Although scarce, recent data suggest that vaginally residing Sneathia becomes pathogenic following its ascension into the upper urogenital tract, amniotic fluid, placenta, and foetal membranes. The role of Sneathia in women's health and disease is generally underappreciated because the cultivation of these bacteria is limited by their complex nutritional requirements, slow growth patterns, and anaerobic nature. For this reason, molecular methods are typically required for the detection and differential

BACKGROUND: Clinicians often express concerns about poor sensitivity of blood cultures in neonates resulting from inadequate inoculant volumes. Our objective was to determine the inoculant volume sent for neonatal sepsis evaluations and identify areas of improvement.
METHODS: Single-center prospective observational study of infants undergoing sepsis evaluation. Blood volume was determined by clinician documentation over 21 months, and additionally by weighing culture bottles during 12 months. Adequate volume was defined as ≥1 mL total inoculant per evaluation. For first-time evaluations, loca

BACKGROUND: Listeria monocytogenes (LM) is a facultative anaerobe, Gram-positive bacillus which is widely distributed in nature, and can be separated from soil, water, and rotten vegetables. Immunocompetent people are less likely to suffer from LM infection or may only show gastrointestinal symptoms. However, immunocompromised elderly people, pregnant women, and newborns may develop life-threatening invasive infections. The mortality rate of LM infection is as high as 25-30%. The aim of this study is to investigate clinical scores of patients with bacteremia of LM confirmed by one or more bloo

Listeria monocytogenes (LM) is an intracellular, aerobic and facultative anaerobic, Gram-positive bacterium, which is primarily transmitted to humans orally via food. LM could occur in asymptomatic pregnant women; however, fetal infection is a serious condition, entailing premature birth, abortion, sepsis, central nervous system (CNS) involvement, or even death. If a pregnant woman exhibits symptoms, the performance is almost like influenza, such as fever, headache, diarrhea, myalgia, or other digestive-related symptoms. This review collected clinical and empirical results regarding the mechan

Ewingella americana is a Gram-negative, catalase positive and anaerobic enterobacterium first described in 1983. Infections caused by this pathogen, such as bacteremia and pneumonia, are extremely rare and primarily occur in patients with underlying pathologies or immunosuppression. There is still a debate as to whether Ewingella americana is a real pathogen or if it can be considered an opportunistic infectious agent. We report the first documented case of Ewingella americana meningitis in literature and the first case of this pathogen causing infection in a newborn. Case presentation: A term

Postinfectious hydrocephalus (PIH), which often follows neonatal sepsis, is the most common cause of pediatric hydrocephalus worldwide, yet the microbial pathogens underlying this disease remain to be elucidated. Characterization of the microbial agents causing PIH would enable a shift from surgical palliation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulation to prevention of the disease. Here, we examined blood and CSF samples collected from 100 consecutive infant cases of PIH and control cases comprising infants with non-postinfectious hydrocephalus in Uganda. Genomic sequencing of samples was under

BACKGROUND: Gut dysbiosis has been suggested as a major risk factor for the development of late-onset sepsis (LOS), a main cause of mortality and morbidity in preterm infants. We aimed to assess specific signatures of the gut microbiome, including metabolic profiles, in preterm infants <34 weeks of gestation preceding LOS.
METHODS: In a single-center cohort, fecal samples from preterm infants were prospectively collected during the period of highest vulnerability for LOS (days 7, 14, and 21 of life). Following 16S rRNA gene profiling, we assessed microbial community function using microbial m

Sepsis, associated with Eggerthella lenta is rarely reported, despite current possibilities for microorganisms isolation and identification. About 100 cases of bacteriemia associated with this pathogen have been reported so far. Postpartum infectious complications are mostly associated with bacterial inhabitants of gastrointestinal tract and vagina, including obligatory anaerobes. This case report highlights E. lenta-associated severe endometritis complicated by abdominal sepsis in a young healthy woman, and the challenges of antibacterial therapy.

Late-onset sepsis (LOS) and necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) account for the highest number of deaths in premature infants and often cause severe morbidity in survivors. NEC is an inflammatory mediated condition, but its pathophysiology remains poorly understood. There is increasing evidence that in LOS the causative organism most often translocates from the gut. No causative microorganism has been consistently associated with either LOS or NEC, but an aberrant gut microbiome development could play a pivotal role. A low bacterial diversity and a delay in anaerobic bacteria colonization may pred

The most commonly identified pathogens related to bacterial meningitis are group B streptococcus and gram-negative enteric flora; anaerobic sepsis and meningitis are very rare. We report a case on a preterm and extremely low-birth weight infant who developed meningitis caused by Bacteroides fragilis and his mother who had postpartum sepsis also caused by the same agent.
