A neonate monitored with scalp electrodes during delivery presented with a scalp abscess, osteomyelitis and bacteremia. Bacteroides fragilis was recovered from the blood culture, and polymicrobial aerobic and anaerobic flora were isolated from the aspirated purulent material. Attention should be paid to the possibility of such complications in infants requiring fetal monitoring.

Twenty-nine anaerobic isolates were recovered from 28 pediatric patients with anaerobic bacteremia: 14 Bacteroides sp (11 in the B fragilis group); four anaerobic Gram-positive cocci; four Clostridium sp; four Propionibacterium acnes; and three Fusobacterium sp. During a ten-year period, 61 infants with perforated necrotizing enterocolitis were managed by bowel resection, enterostomy, and intravenous antibiotics. To ascertain the significance of anaerobic bacteremia in a children's hospital, the records of all patients whose blood cultures grew anaerobes during a 24-month period were reviewed. Anaerobes were isolated from 144 out of 1,126 blood cultures yielding bacteria. Systematic microbiological research and correlation of the histopathological findings obtained from random autopsies revealed 23 hitherto undetected clostridial infections including 11 cases of gas gangrene, 4 of septicemia, 3 of bacteremia, and 5 other clostridial infections. Campylobacter fetus was isolated from five recent cases of human vibriosis, of which two were adults and three were children. One adult presented with pericarditis and the other with recurrent pyrexia. During a five-year period the incidence of neonatal sepsis was 20 times higher in Polynesian newborns compared with European newborns (11 per 1,000 vs. 0.6 per 1,000 total births). The prevalence and significance of anaerobic infections in patients at St. Louis Children's Hospital were studied prospectively for a one-year period. Thirteen cases of polymicrobial bacteremia occurring in obstetric patients are reported. The most commonly occurring combination involved the Bacteriodeaceae, anaerobic streptococci, and Hemophilus vaginalis.
