Oregano essential oil alone and in combination with biogenic silver nanoparticles exhibits anti-Toxoplasma gondii activity in human trophoblastic cells.

INTRODUCTION: Toxoplasmosis, caused by Toxoplasma gondii, is a globally significant zoonosis, particularly severe in immunocompromised individuals and in ocular and congenital infections. Conventional treatment with pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine is limited by its toxicity, highlighting the need for safer and more effective alternatives. In this context, oregano essential oil (Origanum vulgare L., OEO) and biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNp-Bio) have emerged as promising candidates due to their vast antiparasitic activity and low toxicity. METHODS: This study evaluated the anti-T. gondii eff

Congenital Tuberculosis in a Stillborn Calf.

Bovine tuberculosis is a zoonotic infectious disease of cattle caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium bovis. In adult cattle, transmission is mainly via the respiratory route, whereas, in young calves, oral infection is also common. Congenital tuberculosis is rare. The purpose of this study was to describe in utero infection of a bovine stillbirth. The fetus was necropsied and tissue samples were processed for histopathology, bacteriology and PCR; a sample of the isolated strain was genotyped using spoligotyping. The whole herd was tuberculin skin tested and the dam's serum was also assessed fo

Immunopathological signatures in congenital tuberculosis-a case-matched study.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital tuberculosis (CTB) is a rare and life-threatening condition with a mortality rate of approximately 53% even with clinical intervention, which is markedly higher than that of adult tuberculosis (ATB). To date, the phenotypic and functional characteristics of immune cells in CTB neonates remain largely uncharacterized. METHODS: In this case-control study, we enrolled nine CTB neonates and nine paired healthy control (pHC) neonates, collecting basic clinical characteristics of the infants and their mothers, and comparing routine blood test results, C-reactive protein (CR

Comparative analysis of clinical manifestations between congenital and non-congenital tuberculosis in infants.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical manifestations and associated characteristics of congenital tuberculosis (CTB) and non-congenital tuberculosis (NCTB) in infants, thereby improving early recognition and enabling precision treatment. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted of 72 tuberculosis cases in infants aged ≤ 1 year admitted to Kunming Children's Hospital between 2014 and 2024. Given the inherent difficulty in distinguishing congenital from early postnatal acquisition in retrospective studies, patients were classified into a CTB group (n = 23) and an NCTB group (n = 49) using m

Congenital tuberculosis transmitted via the placenta: identification by metagenomic next-generation sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Congenital tuberculosis (CTB) is a rare disease with high mortality in neonates. Early diagnosis is crucial but often delayed due to atypical clinical and imaging manifestations. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 36-day-old female infant presenting with recurrent fever. Laboratory data showed leukocytosis and neutrophilia with mildly elevated C-reactive protein. Chest computed tomography revealed extensive ground-glass opacities, multiple subpleural nodules, and necrotic hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy. The asymptomatic mother was subsequently found to have diffuse miliary nodu

The First Documented Case of Congenital Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis in Indonesia: A Case Report.

Congenital drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) is a rare condition with no standardized treatment. Congenital TB itself is a life-threatening condition. The clinical manifestations can be nonspecific, particularly in preterm infants, which can further reduce diagnostic awareness. We report a case of a 32-week preterm baby with rifampicin-resistant TB. She was born with respiratory distress and early-onset jaundice, initially suspected of sepsis and admitted to the NICU. The infant initially showed clinical improvement at 3 days of life, but at 23 days of life, the clinical condition worsened d

Use of Levofloxacin in Congenital Tuberculosis: Two Case Reports and a Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Congenital tuberculosis (CTB), a serious and often fatal infection acquired in utero or during delivery, continues to pose significant challenges in treatment. METHODS: We describe 2 cases of CTB treated with levofloxacin from the inpatient department of Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital. In addition, we performed a literature review and identified 18 eligible cases from 17 published case reports of CTB treated with levofloxacin-containing antituberculosis regimens, which were reported in both Chinese and English journals. These cases were analyzed together with our patients.

Cerebral tuberculoma in pregnancy (Jan 1975-May 2025): a systematic review and descriptive analysis of 33 published cases.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral tuberculoma is an infrequent but life-threatening manifestation of tuberculosis whose diagnosis and treatment are uniquely complicated by pregnancy-related physiological changes. Evidence to guide clinicians remains fragmented and largely anecdotal. METHODS: We systematically searched MEDLINE, LILACS and grey literature to May 2025 for reports of cerebral tuberculoma in pregnant or postpartum women. Twenty-seven studies (24 case reports, 2 descriptive studies, 1 case series) from 20 countries met inclusion criteria, yielding individual-level data on 33 patients. Demograph

Congenital tuberculosis presenting as acute cervical lymphadenitis in a 28-week preterm infant.

Congenital tuberculosis is a rare infection in infants with extremely low birthweight. We report the case of an infant born at 28 weeks' gestation who developed isolated, cervical lymphadenitis at age 84 days. Despite the infant's continuous hospitalisation in the neonatal intensive care unit and a negative maternal history, Mycobacterium tuberculosis was identified through culture and molecular testing of surgical drainage fluid. The diagnosis was substantially delayed due to several factors: a low index of clinical suspicion based on the infant's isolation from external sources, the presence

Effects of Stannous Fluoride Toothpaste and Chios Mastiha Toothpaste on the Prevention of Enamel Erosion.

PURPOSE: Erosive tooth wear (ETW) is an increasingly prevalent condition characterised by the loss of dental hard tissue due to repeated effects and interactions of acids and mechanical forces. The aim of this study was to investigate the primary preventive effect of salivary pellicle combined with either stannous fluoride (SnF2) toothpaste or mastic toothpaste against ETW in permanent teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a three-arm invitro model, 54 enamel samples (18 in each group) were prepared with a salivary pellicle alone (control), salivary pellicle with SnF2 toothpaste, or salivary pe

Etiology, Risk Factors, and Outcomes of Neonatal Candidiasis: Findings From a Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background Candida is a common cause of invasive fungal infection, which increases the risk of morbidity and mortality in neonates. The prevalence of neonatal candidemia has been reported in some regions; however, there is a dearth of studies on the prevalence, risk factors, and outcomes of neonatal candidemia in Arab countries. Therefore, we conducted this study to determine the prevalence, etiology, risk factors, and adverse outcomes of neonatal candidiasis in Saudi Arabian neonatal populations. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study of neonates admitted to the intensive neonatal care

Novel, fully human, anti-PfCSP antibodies with potent antimalarial activity using a phage display based strategy.

Developing an effective vaccine against malaria remains a prime goal of human health. The circumsporozoite protein (CSP) is a major surface protein of the sporozoites, and is the target of two licensed Plasmodium falciparum malaria vaccines, RTS,S/AS01, named Mosquirix and R21/Matrix-M. However, to improve the standards set by these vaccines we require a second-generation or prophylactic vaccine. Recently, monoclonal antibodies have emerged as essential biopharmaceutical prophylactic vaccines. The present study targeted recombinant Plasmodium falciparum CSP (rPfCSP) with a phage display of hum

Immune-neuroendocrine reactivity and features of tuberculosis in pregnancy.

The combination of tuberculosis and pregnancy always raises questions about therapy, the specialness of management of pregnancy, obstetrics, postpartum period, and lactation; the effect of therapy on fetal development and the peculiarities of the tuberculosis course. Until recently, tuberculosis and pregnancy were considered a rare combination, but with the growing problem of HIV infection and worsening tuberculosis screening among adults, this combination has become quite common. Moreover, cases of congenital tuberculosis in newborns have begun to emerge. In this review, we analyzed features

Neonatal Immunity to Candida: Current Understanding and Contributions of Murine Models.

Neonatal candidiasis poses significant clinical challenges due to its potential for severe morbidity and mortality in vulnerable infants. Due to their underdeveloped immune system, neonates are at a higher risk for infections caused by Candida species. They can vary from mild to severe, including penetrating deep tissues, bloodstream spread, and dissemination to organs. The immune system of newborns is marked by a limited innate immune response, with lower levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Adaptive immunity, important for lasting protection, also experiences delayed maturation with weakene
