BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) poses a significant risk during pregnancy and the postpartum period, with evidence linking these stages to an increased likelihood of progression from latent TB infection to active disease. Although TB has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, including congenital transmission, the mechanisms by which Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) affects placental structure and function remain poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the stage-dependent effects of Mtb infection on human placental tissue and assess the potential for vertical tra

BACKGROUND: Congenital tuberculosis (TB) is a rare but often fatal condition, particularly in preterm neonates within high-burden regions like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Diagnosis is complicated by nonspecific symptoms and resource limitations, with maternal critical illness further delaying detection and increasing vertical transmission risk.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report details a preterm male infant (30 weeks' gestation) born vaginally to an HIV-negative mother who experienced a 2-month coma during pregnancy in the DRC. The neonate presented at 3 weeks with cervical lymp

This study explores the color Doppler ultrasonography features of congenital tuberculosis in preterm infants through a detailed analysis of a case from February 2025, including clinical, NGS, and sonographic data. The findings identify specific vascular signatures that facilitate early diagnosis, offering a valuable reference for clinicians encountering similar cases. High-frequency probe ultrasonography was used to characterize pulmonary lesions and differentiate tuberculosis from bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS). A male infant born at gestati

We describe a case of congenital tuberculosis in an extremely preterm infant (24 weeks' gestation, 800 g) conceived via in vitro fertilization, complicated by cytomegalovirus and Klebsiella pneumoniae coinfections. Diagnosis was confirmed by metagenomic next-generation sequencing after conventional tests were inconclusive. Management included anti-tuberculosis, antiviral, and antibacterial therapy, as well as surgical correction of a patent ductus arteriosus. The infant demonstrated significant clinical recovery, with resolution of pulmonary, splenic, and cardiac abnormalities. This case under

Tuberculosis in pregnancy is a series of diseases caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Exact global incidence rates are difficult to obtain and are expected to be similar to those in the general population, with potentially higher rates in developing countries. Tuberculosis in pregnancy is associated with adverse reactions in both mother and fetus, but the mechanism is not fully understood. Although many studies have explored the impact of tuberculosis on pregnancy outcomes and complications, there are still relatively few summary articles on it. This review aims to briefly summarize th

Tuberculosis (TB) in Argentina has been on the rise in recent years, with a higher notification rate in the 15 to 49-year-old age group. Although it is estimated that the incidence of TB in pregnant and postpartum individuals is higher than in the general population, there is insufficient data in our country. Congenital transmission is very rare. We report a case of congenital TB transmission diagnosed through epidemiological criteria and molecular methods. We emphasize the importance of implementing TB screening algorithms in pregnancy, tailored to the populations served and the resources ava

OBJECTIVES: Environmental intolerance (EI) can negatively impact well-being and daily life, and even lead to disability. Healthcare can detect EI early and conduct interventions. This study explored ways of identifying environmental exposure-related health worries and EI during occupational health (OH) check-ups, and their associations with unselected working-age employees' perceived work ability, stress and overall health.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A crosssectional survey was conducted among 355 employees attending OH check-ups at an occupational health services (OHS) unit in Southern Ostrobothn

BACKGROUND: Management of newborns and healthcare workers (HCWs) exposed to congenital tuberculosis (TB) in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) has been reported rarely.
AIM: To outline a contact investigation process for individuals exposed to congenital TB in the NICU and investigate nosocomial transmission. Additionally, to assess the efficacy and safety of window prophylaxis in exposed newborns.
METHODS: A baby, born at a gestational age of 28 + 1 weeks, was diagnosed with isoniazid-resistant congenital TB on the 39th day of admission to the level IV NICU. Newborns and HCWs exposed c

This chapter outlines the methodology employed to infect the chorionic and amniotic membranes with Mycobacterium tuberculosis during pregnancy. Particularly, congenital tuberculosis, a rare and serious condition associated with cases in neonates and reactivation of latent tuberculosis in pregnant mothers, is interesting to study. Understanding the mechanisms of infection and the response of fetal membranes is crucial for developing effective treatments in these cases, which will promote better neonatal and maternal health in situations of tuberculosis during pregnancy. Establishing a standardi

Congenital multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a rare disease with high mortality. We report a case of a neonate girl with congenital MDR-TB. The infant's mother underwent in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer and did not show any symptoms prior to delivery. After the 14th day of life, the infant had a fever and worsening difficulty breathing despite antibiotic treatment. She was then confirmed to have congenital MDR-TB and received ventilation and anti-TB treatment. When the infant's TB was diagnosed, her mother was screened for TB and found to have MDR-TB, affecting both her lungs

OBJECTIVES: Congenital tuberculosis (TB) is a rare complication of TB during pregnancy. Diagnosis and treatment are challenging, especially in premature infants due to limited data on drug dosing.
CASE PRESENTATION: A male infant was born at 33 weeks gestational age to a mother who was hospitalized with respiratory illness and diagnosed with TB after delivery. The diagnosis was based on the presence of granulomas and mycobacteria in the placenta, positive mycobacterium TB PCR in gastric aspirate, and growth of MTB from gastric aspirate and bronchoalveolar lavage cultures. Treatment started in

In India, congenital tuberculosis (TB) accounts for 1%-3% of the TB burden. We present the case of a term neonate admitted with respiratory distress, hepatosplenomegaly and abnormal coagulation profiles. The neonate's condition rapidly deteriorated, progressing to respiratory failure within 72 hours of admission. Tuberculosis-specific tests (TB PCR and culture) in the neonate confirmed the diagnosis of disseminated congenital TB. However, the results arrived after the neonate succumbed to multiorgan failure following a brief hospital stay. Maternal chest imaging after these results revealed mi

Congenital tuberculosis is rare and carries a high mortality rate. In this study, we report a case of congenital pulmonary tuberculosis in a very low birth weight of 1310g neonate born at the gestational age of 30 weeks 4 days. The mother of the patient had a fever a week before the delivery, and her symptoms improved after taking antibiotics. At the 9th day after birth, the neonate developed a fever, there was no improvement after the administration of antibiotics. Considering the maternal history and clinical suspicion of tuberculosis, we performed a series of screening tests and congenital

In India, tuberculosis (TB) is a severe public health concern. We report a case of a 45-day male baby who had respiratory distress and fever, whose mother was diagnosed with pulmonary TB infection prior to delivery which was confirmed by a positive Cartridge-Based Nucleic Amplification Test (CBNAAT) from the sputum and was on antitubercular therapy (ATT). Due to the symptoms, signs, and maternal TB history, congenital TB was strongly suspected. A positive CBNAAT result from the gastric lavage further supported this suspicion. This case emphasizes the value of obtaining details on the mother's

Congenital tuberculosis is a rare infectious disease with less than 500 cases documented worldwide. Mortality is significant, ranging from 34 to 53%, and death without treatment is inevitable. Patients exhibit nonspecific symptoms such as fever, cough, respiratory distress, feeding intolerance, and irritability which can make appropriate diagnosis challenging in Peng et al. (2011) Pediatr Pulmonol 46(12), 1215-1224. Tuberculosis prevalence is particularly high in developing countries where access to resources can be limited in World Health Organization (2019) Global tuberculosis report 2019, G
