During the COVID-19 pandemic, prenatal care services were disrupted. We analyzed the trajectory slopes of cases of congenital toxoplasmosis (CT) and acute toxoplasmosis during pregnancy from 2019 to 2022 (to reflect the cases during the pandemic years 2020-2022) vs. 2000 to 2019, using data from the Remington Laboratory, the National Reference Center for Toxoplasmosis in the US. During the pandemic, there was a statistically significant upward trajectory in the yearly number of CT cases. Monitoring of this trend is needed.

Ocular toxoplasmosis is the most common cause of posterior uveitis worldwide, with an estimated incidence of 8.4%. It follows infection by the ubiquitous parasite Toxoplasma gondii. The diagnosis is based on clinical examination looking for uveitis and most often retinochoroiditis. Microbiological confirmation is an element of positive diagnosis. The indications for treatment remain debated, whether for acute forms or recurrences.

Toxoplasma gondii is an Apicomplexan parasite that is estimated to infect at least one-third of the global human population. T. gondii infection may be transmitted horizontally or vertically. The main risk factors for transmission to humans are related to diet, especially the consumption of undercooked meat, along with soil contact. In immunocompetent persons, the acute infection may go undetected as it typically produces minor, non-specific symptoms that are self-limited. After infection is established, recurrent retinochoroiditis is the most common clinical disease. In contrast, severe syste

This study aimed to elucidate the clinical characteristics of patients diagnosed with toxoplasmosis in Korea. We collected and analyzed the specific research data of 5,917 patients from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA; 2007-2020) and 533 electronic medical records (EMRs; 2003-2021) of Korean patients. The HIRA data showed that toxoplasmosis is an endemic disease that occurs constantly in Korea, with a large proportion of patients complaining of ocular symptoms. Of the 533 patients for whom EMR data were available, 54.6% were diagnosed with toxoplasmosis; ocular toxoplasmosis (

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a zoonotic protozoan parasite that causes congenital toxoplasmosis, including fetal death, abortion, stillbirth, morphological abnormalities, and premature birth. Primary T. gondii infection in pregnant women results in congenital toxoplasmosis. C-C chemokine receptor (CCR) 2 is reportedly a critical host defense factor against T. gondii infection. However, details of the role of CCR2 in the host immune response to T. gondii in congenital toxoplasmosis remain unclear. Here, we infected pregnant CCR2-deficient mice with T. gondii, resulting in stillbirth, embryo

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii transmission can occur during pregnancy if the mother contracts the infection for the first time. Treatment strategies include the use of antimicrobial medications and providing supportive care. Spiramycin is commonly used to treat toxoplasmosis in pregnant women and to hinder the disease's transmission. However, its ability to treat the fetus is questionable due to its limited capacity to cross the placental barrier. Additionally, economic constraints and sanctions may impede access to this medication.
OBJECTIVES: Consequently, in search of an effective treatmen

BACKGROUND: Congenital toxoplasmosis occurs when a pregnant woman becomes infected with Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) for the first time. Treatment typically involves antimicrobial medications, with spiramycin commonly used to prevent transmission. However, spiramycin's effectiveness is limited due to poor placental penetration. Clindamycin, another antibiotic, can cross the placenta but reaches the fetus at only half the maternal concentration. Encapsulating the drug in chitosan-coated niosomes (Cs-Nio) could enhance its effectiveness by targeting specific organs and ensuring sustained releas

Quetiapine (Seroquel), a dibenzothiazepine derivative, is an atypical antipsychotic with demonstrated efficacy in acute schizophrenia. In short-term, randomised, double-blind trials, it was usually more effective than placebo, and was generally effective against both positive and negative symptoms. Overall, quetiapine (up to 750 mg/day) was at least as effective as chlorpromazine (up to 750 mg/day) and had similar efficacy to haloperidol (up to 16 mg/day) in patients with acute schizophrenia in randomised, double-blind trials; it was at least as effective as haloperidol 20 mg/day in patients w

UNLABELLED: The risk of infection transmission from mother to fetus depends on the pathogen. TORCH agents cause some neuroinfections, including Toxoplasmosis, rubella, Cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex 1 and 2, and others (Varicella Zoster, Parvovirus B-19, Epstein-Barr virus, and Zika virus). The consequences can be stillbirth, prematurity, uterine growth restriction, and congenital malformations. The detection of DNA/RNA from CSF by molecular methods is a marker of the involvement of congenital infection in the central nervous system. This study aimed to identify the frequency of these pathoge

Triglycerides (TGs) in adipocytes provide the major stores of metabolic energy in the body. Optimal amounts of TG stores are desirable as insufficient capacity to store TG, as in lipodystrophy, or exceeding the capacity for storage, as in obesity, results in metabolic disease. We hypothesized that mice lacking TG storage in adipocytes would result in excess TG storage in cell types other than adipocytes and severe lipotoxicity accompanied by metabolic disease. To test this hypothesis, we selectively deleted both TG synthesis enzymes, DGAT1 and DGAT2, in adipocytes (ADGAT DKO mice). As expected

INTRODUCTION: Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite. While this infection typically exhibits no symptoms in humans, it poses a potential threat to the developing fetus in pregnant women. Several risk factors contribute to toxoplasmosis infection. Adherence to hygiene protocols and avoiding the consumption of raw meat, unwashed vegetables, and fruits may mitigate the risk of this disease.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the prevalence of toxoplasmosis risk factors among pregnant women suspected of toxoplasmosis living in rural areas with those residing in urban areas.

The conventional treatment of congenital toxoplasmosis is mainly based on the combination of sulfadiazine and pyrimethamine. However, therapy with these drugs is associated with severe side effects and resistance, requiring the study of new therapeutic strategies. There are currently many studies with natural products, including Copaifera oleoresin, showing actions against some pathogens, as Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania. In the present study, we investigated the effects of the leaf hydroalcoholic extract and oleoresin from Copaifera multijuga against Toxoplasma gondii in human villous (BeW

One-third of the world's population is estimated to be affected by toxoplasmosis. Pregnancy-related Toxoplasma gondii infection can cause vertical transmission, infect the fetus, and cause miscarriage, stillbirth, and fetal death. The current study showed that both human trophoblast cells (BeWo lineage) and human explant villous were resistant to T. gondii infection after incubation with BjussuLAAO-II, an l-amino acid oxidase isolated from Bothrops jararacussu. Almost 90% of the parasite's ability to proliferate in BeWo cells was decreased by the toxin at 1.56 μg/mL and showed an irreversible
