BACKGROUND: Although clinical malaria occurs far less frequently in newborns and young infants aged <6 months than in older children, its importance and public health relevance should not be ignored. This population is often perceived to have protection against malaria, and making a diagnosis of malaria in this age group can be challenging, as the symptoms generally overlap with those of many other common conditions in infancy, possibly leading to misdiagnosis or treatment delay. This narrative review synthesises current evidence, explores existing treatment recommendations, and highlights pr

India along with other countries in the World Health Organization (WHO) Southeast Asia region has set a goal to eliminate rubella by December 2026 through active tracking and vaccination program. However, the incidence of sporadic events and outbreaks in recent years has posed a significant challenge to this goal. To access the ongoing infections and the effectiveness of immunization efforts, we evaluated the presence of anti-rubella IgM and IgG antibodies, which serve as indicators of ongoing infection and immune protection, respectively. Serum samples from individuals presenting with suspect

Background and objectives Zika virus (ZIKV) is a flavivirus transmitted by the bite of infected Aedes mosquito. In 2015-16, Brazil reported cases of ZIKV virus infection followed by Guillain-Barre syndrome and congenital birth defects. India has reported ZIKV virus infections sporadically since 2016, without adverse events. This prompted us to conduct this in-silico investigation and identify reasons for this variation. The objective was to study ZIKV envelope protein (E-protein) to identify possible mutations and their potential role in virus entry into the host cell. Methods Using multiple s

Neonatal malaria is rare due to protective maternal immunity and breastfeeding, particularly in non-endemic areas of the globe. Plasmodium (P.) knowlesi is a zoonotic species mainly found in Southeast Asia, and very few cases have been reported worldwide in the pediatric population. We report the first documented case of congenital malaria in Bahrain due to Plasmodium knowlesi. A 26-day-old, Pakistani male infant presented with a one-day history of fever, jaundice, lethargy, and hepatosplenomegaly. Laboratory investigations revealed pancytopenia and elevated inflammatory markers. Despite negat

Toxoplasmosis, caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, affects nearly one-third of the global population and may result in severe congenital, ocular, and neurological manifestations. Current therapies are limited by toxicity, poor efficacy against chronic infection, and lack of activity against tissue cysts, highlighting the need for new therapeutic strategies. Aspartic proteases represent promising but underexplored drug targets in T. gondii. In this study, we evaluated the anti-T. gondii potential of a panel of aspartic protease inhibitors initially developed for inhibition of Plasmodium.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

BACKGROUND: Adverse birth outcomes are a significant public health problem worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Adverse birth outcomes have significant immediate and long-term health consequences for infants and their families. Understanding the determinants of adverse birth outcomes is crucial to effective interventions. For this purpose, this study aimed to assess the incidence and predictors of adverse birth outcomes among women who gave birth at Assosa General Hospital.
METHODS: An institution-based retrospective cohort study design was used to select 715 mothers w

Developing an effective vaccine against malaria remains a prime goal of human health. The circumsporozoite protein (CSP) is a major surface protein of the sporozoites, and is the target of two licensed Plasmodium falciparum malaria vaccines, RTS,S/AS01, named Mosquirix and R21/Matrix-M. However, to improve the standards set by these vaccines we require a second-generation or prophylactic vaccine. Recently, monoclonal antibodies have emerged as essential biopharmaceutical prophylactic vaccines. The present study targeted recombinant Plasmodium falciparum CSP (rPfCSP) with a phage display of hum

The escalating challenges posed by climate change have profound implications for public health, particularly concerning the interplay between pregnancy and vector-borne infections. This review explores the multifaceted interactions between climate change, vector ecology, and pregnancy, with a focus on pathogens such as malaria, Zika virus, and dengue fever. For pregnant women, these vector-borne infections carry significant risks, including miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth, and congenital anomalies, necessitating urgent and effective public health responses. Highlighting the heightened v

BACKGROUND: Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is a congenital abnormality of the cardiac conduction system characterized by the presence of an accessory pathway, which can predispose affected individuals to supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), atrial fibrillation, ventricular fibrillation, and sudden cardiac death. Despite its clinical significance, WPW syndrome is often underdiagnosed, particularly in resource-limited settings where cardiac arrhythmias may be misattributed to other conditions.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report an eight-year-old Nigerian girl with WPW syndrome who was repeatedly

INTRODUCTION: Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. Infection during pregnancy can lead to congenital toxoplasmosis, which is associated with severe outcomes such as fetal abnormalities, stillbirths, and miscarriage. Current treatment options for congenital toxoplasmosis have several limitations, including low efficacy in the chronic phase of the disease and concerns about potential fetal toxicity, such as bone marrow suppression and teratogenic effects. Therefore, there is an urgent need for more effective and safer therapeutic alternatives. The Medicines for M

BACKGROUND: Malaria during pregnancy poses significant risks to both the mother and the developing fetus. For pregnant women, the infection can result in severe illness and even death. Parasite sequestration in the placenta can cause maternal anemia and increase the risk of mortality both during and after childbirth. Malaria is also a major contributor to stillbirths and preterm births. Infected placental tissue can impede fetal growth, resulting in low birth weight, which is linked to delayed growth and cognitive development in the child. Furthermore, malaria during pregnancy remains a major

Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALY

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women in malaria-endemic countries are at risk of placental malaria (PM), which can lead to adverse outcomes for both mothers and children. Histology of placental tissue is the gold standard for diagnosing PM, as it can detect current and past infections. Prior reviews focussed on malaria in pregnancy generally; in this systematic review, we specifically examine PM due to Plasmodium falciparum, its associated risk factors, and its impact on maternal and foetal outcomes.
METHODS: We included studies performed since 2013, reflecting important updates in WHO policy recommend

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (Orthoflavivirus zikaense), a mosquito-borne virus in the family Flaviviridae and genus Orthoflavivirus, has garnered international attention due to its neurological and congenital impacts. Although endemic to Africa, its presence in Nigeria remains poorly understood and often overshadowed by other febrile illnesses such as malaria and dengue. This review synthesizes peer-reviewed literature published between 2015 and 2025 to explore the epidemiology, diagnostic challenges, and public health implications of ZIKV in Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Diversity in malarial antigens is an immune evasion mechanism that gives malaria parasites an edge over the host. Immune responses against one variant of a polymorphic antigen are usually not fully effective against other variants due to altered epitopes. This study aimed to evaluate diversity in the Plasmodium falciparum antigens apical membrane antigen 1 (PfAMA1) and circumsporozoite protein (PfCSP) from circulating parasites in a malaria-endemic community in southern Ghana and to determine the effects of polymorphisms on antibody response specificity.
METHODS: The study invol

BACKGROUND: Neonatal malaria is defined as the detection of asexual stages of Plasmodium species in the cord blood within the first 28 days of life. It can be congenital or acquired through mosquito bites or blood transfusions. Neonates are generally considered to be relatively protected due to the multiple innate and acquired physiological protective effects present in neonates. However, in areas where malaria is endemic, the prevalence of malaria in neonates is high. The predominant clinical feature of malaria in neonates is fever. Other clinical manifestations of neonatal malaria include re

INTRODUCTION: ProC6C is a multi-stage malaria vaccine which includes Plasmodium falciparum Circumsporozoite Protein (PfCSP), Pfs48/45 and Pfs230 sequences, designed to elicit functional antibodies that prevent sporozoite invasion of human hepatocytes (PfCSP) and parasite development in mosquitoes (Pfs48/45 and Pfs230). ProC6C formulated on Alhydrogel was evaluated in combination with Matrix-M in a Phase 1 trial in Burkina Faso. The PfCSP antibody responses were assessed for magnitude, specificity, avidity and functionality. These results compliment the prior reported safety and tolerability of

Congenital transmission of Toxoplasma gondii can occur when a woman becomes infected for the first time during or just before pregnancy. Toxoplasma gondii in the fetus can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, ocular or neurological abnormalities at birth, or progressive visual, hearing, motor, and cognitive deficiencies. The national seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in Nigeria was previously unknown. The 2018 Nigeria HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey collected demographic, socioeconomic, and HIV-related data and stored blood specimens with consent for future analysis for other pathogens of
