Novel Biomarkers: Soluble Urokinase-Type Plasminogen Activator Receptor and Procalcitonin- and Histological Chorioamnionitis after Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes.

Fetal inflammatory response syndrome or infection after preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) increases neonatal morbidity in preterm deliveries. Biochemical markers from the amniotic fluid (AF) have been used to evaluate possible intra-amniotic infection during the asymptomatic phase after PPROM. This study aimed to describe whether soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) or procalcitonin (PCT) from AF or maternal sera could reveal fetal inflammatory response or infection after PPROM. AF and maternal serum samples were collected weekly after PPROM (23+ 0 - 34+ 6

Characterization of Amniotic Fluid Ureaplasma Species from Pregnancies Complicated by Preterm Prelabor Rupture of Membranes.

The main aim of this study was to determine expanded sequence types (eSTs) of Ureaplasma species (U. spp.). DNA isolated from the amniotic fluid of pregnancies complicated by preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM) using an expanded multilocus sequence typing scheme. Additionally, the study sought to examine whether phylogenetic subgroups of U. spp. DNA differ with respect to maternal demographic and clinical parameters and selected aspects of short-term neonatal morbidity. This retrospective cohort study was focused on singleton pregnancies complicated by PPROM occurring between the ges

Bioinformatics and network pharmacology discover the molecular mechanism of Liuwei Dihuang pills in treating cerebral palsy.

A collection of chronic central motor, postural, and activity restriction symptoms are referred to as cerebral palsy (CP). Previous research suggests that a number of perinatal variables, including hypoxia, may be linked to CP. And the pathophysiological process that causes brain injury in growing fetuses is mostly caused by amniotic fluid infection and intra-amniotic inflammation. Still, there is still much to learn about the molecular mechanism of CP. The goal of this study was to identify the molecular mechanism of Liuwei Dihuang pill (LWDHP) in the treatment of CP using network pharmacolog

Safety of COVID-19 Vaccination During Pregnancy and Lactation: A VigiBase Analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence on the safety of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination during pregnancy and lactation. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the association between COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy and lactation and reporting risk of adverse pregnancy or lactation outcomes. METHODS: Using VigiBase, we performed a disproportionality analysis with case/non case design. Cases were defined based on the Standardized MedDRA Queries (SMQs) of "pregnancy and neonatal topics" and non-cases were defined as all other adverse events. We included all reports with COVID-19 vaccine

A novel method for equine embryo transfer from contaminated recipient mares into second healthy recipients for surviving embryos.

Embryo transfer (ET) is regarded as one of the reproductive methods for genetic improvement initiatives in the horse business. The current study aimed to increase the success rate of ET by re-flushing and re-transferring of embryos from contaminated recipient mares into second healthy recipients. The study involved 25 recipient mares that demonstrated embryonic vesicles inside intraluminal fluid (ILF) on ultrasound scanning 2 ± 0.5 days after ET. Seven recipient mares were left without re-flushing and re-transferring of embryos (control group) and 18 recipient mares (treated group) were subjec

Quantitative cervicovaginal fluid fetal fibronectin: A liquid biopsy for intra-amniotic inflammation.

INTRODUCTION: Intra-amniotic inflammation is causally linked to spontaneous preterm labor. The gold standard for the diagnosis of intra-amniotic inflammation is the determination of an amniotic fluid profile obtained from transabdominal amniocentesis, which is invasive. Cervicovaginal fluid fetal fibronectin (fFN) is a widely-used predictive biomarker for spontaneous preterm labor. The aims of this study are to determine (1) whether a quantitative cervicovaginal fluid fFN test can be used to identify the presence of intra-amniotic inflammation; and (2) an appropriate cut-off value of a cervico

Neonatal Mastitis: Clinical Presentation and Approach to Evaluation and Management.

Mastitis is an uncommon but potentially serious infection in neonates. Characteristic findings include erythema, induration, and tenderness around the breast bud. Fluctuance and purulent drainage may be present with abscess formation. Fever and signs of systemic illness may occur, or there may only be signs of localized soft tissue infection. Until recently, there have been very few cohort studies of neonatal mastitis in high-income countries, and no literature available regarding the incidence of concurrent serious bacterial infection such as meningitis or urinary tract infection. A recent la

Perinatal Vaccination by Transamniotic Fetal mRNA Delivery: Immunization Against Human Cytomegalovirus in a Rodent Model.

PURPOSE: Gestational cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a prevalent disease with significant fetal and neonatal morbidity. MRNA vaccines have emerged as powerful options for postnatal immunization against infections. It has been shown that mRNA delivered into the amniotic fluid reaches the fetal circulation via the placenta. We investigated whether transamniotic mRNA delivery could be a viable strategy for perinatal CMV immunization, first utilizing a rodent model. METHODS: Pregnant Sprague Dawley dams underwent volume-matched intra-amniotic injections in all their fetuses (n = 103) of either

Predicting hosts and cross-species transmission of Streptococcus agalactiae by interpretable machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae, commonly known as Group B Streptococcus (GBS), exhibits a broad host range, manifesting as both a beneficial commensal and an opportunistic pathogen across various species. In humans, it poses significant risks, causing neonatal sepsis and meningitis, along with severe infections in adults. Additionally, it impacts livestock by inducing mastitis in bovines and contributing to epidemic mortality in fish populations. Despite its wide host spectrum, the mechanisms enabling GBS to adapt to specific hosts remain inadequately elucidated. Therefore, the developme

Milk Fat Globules: 2024 Updates.

Milk fat globules (MFGs) are a remarkable example of nature's ingenuity. Human milk (HM) carries contains 3-5% fat, 0.8-0.9% protein, 6.9-7.2% carbohydrate calculated as lactose, and 0.2% mineral constituents. Most of these nutrients are carried in these MFGs, which are composed of an energy-rich triacylglycerol (TAG) core surrounded by a triple membrane structure. The membrane contains polar lipids, specialized proteins, glycoproteins, and cholesterol. Each of these bioactive components serves important nutritional, immunological, neurological, and digestive functions. These MFGs are designed

Multimodal Management of Cervical Insufficiency Complicated by Intra-amniotic Candida albicans Infection.

INTRODUCTION: Bacteria are the most common pathogens implicated in ascending infections in patients with cervical insufficiency. However, Candida albicans is a rare and serious cause of intra-amniotic infection that should be considered on the differential diagnosis. Upon diagnosis following cerclage placement, patients are generally advised to undergo immediate cerclage removal and discontinuation of the pregnancy due to the high risk of maternal and fetal morbidity. However, some patients decline and instead elect to continue the pregnancy with or without treatment. Limited data exist to gui

Evidence for the participation of CHCHD2/MNRR1, a mitochondrial protein, in spontaneous labor at term and in preterm labor with intra-amniotic infection.

OBJECTIVE: Intra-amniotic inflammation (IAI), associated with either microbe (infection) or danger signals (sterile), plays a major role in the pathophysiology of preterm labor and delivery. Coiled-Coil-Helix-Coiled-Coil-Helix Domain Containing 2 (CHCHD2) [also known as Mitochondrial Nuclear Retrograde Regulator 1 (MNRR1)], a mitochondrial protein involved in oxidative phosphorylation and cell survival, is capable of sensing tissue hypoxia and inflammatory signaling. The ability to maintain an appropriate energy balance at the cellular level while adapting to environmental stress is essential
