A novel method for equine embryo transfer from contaminated recipient mares into second healthy recipients for surviving embryos.

Embryo transfer (ET) is regarded as one of the reproductive methods for genetic improvement initiatives in the horse business. The current study aimed to increase the success rate of ET by re-flushing and re-transferring of embryos from contaminated recipient mares into second healthy recipients. The study involved 25 recipient mares that demonstrated embryonic vesicles inside intraluminal fluid (ILF) on ultrasound scanning 2 ± 0.5 days after ET. Seven recipient mares were left without re-flushing and re-transferring of embryos (control group) and 18 recipient mares (treated group) were subjec

Neonatal Mastitis: Clinical Presentation and Approach to Evaluation and Management.

Mastitis is an uncommon but potentially serious infection in neonates. Characteristic findings include erythema, induration, and tenderness around the breast bud. Fluctuance and purulent drainage may be present with abscess formation. Fever and signs of systemic illness may occur, or there may only be signs of localized soft tissue infection. Until recently, there have been very few cohort studies of neonatal mastitis in high-income countries, and no literature available regarding the incidence of concurrent serious bacterial infection such as meningitis or urinary tract infection. A recent la

Predicting hosts and cross-species transmission of Streptococcus agalactiae by interpretable machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae, commonly known as Group B Streptococcus (GBS), exhibits a broad host range, manifesting as both a beneficial commensal and an opportunistic pathogen across various species. In humans, it poses significant risks, causing neonatal sepsis and meningitis, along with severe infections in adults. Additionally, it impacts livestock by inducing mastitis in bovines and contributing to epidemic mortality in fish populations. Despite its wide host spectrum, the mechanisms enabling GBS to adapt to specific hosts remain inadequately elucidated. Therefore, the developme

Milk Fat Globules: 2024 Updates.

Milk fat globules (MFGs) are a remarkable example of nature's ingenuity. Human milk (HM) carries contains 3-5% fat, 0.8-0.9% protein, 6.9-7.2% carbohydrate calculated as lactose, and 0.2% mineral constituents. Most of these nutrients are carried in these MFGs, which are composed of an energy-rich triacylglycerol (TAG) core surrounded by a triple membrane structure. The membrane contains polar lipids, specialized proteins, glycoproteins, and cholesterol. Each of these bioactive components serves important nutritional, immunological, neurological, and digestive functions. These MFGs are designed

Parental factors that impact the ecology of human mammary development, milk secretion, and milk composition-a report from "Breastmilk Ecology: Genesis of Infant Nutrition (BEGIN)" Working Group 1.

The goal of Working Group 1 in the Breastmilk Ecology: Genesis of Infant Nutrition (BEGIN) Project was to outline factors influencing biological processes governing human milk secretion and to evaluate our current knowledge of these processes. Many factors regulate mammary gland development in utero, during puberty, in pregnancy, through secretory activation, and at weaning. These factors include breast anatomy, breast vasculature, diet, and the lactating parent's hormonal milieu including estrogen, progesterone, placental lactogen, cortisol, prolactin, and growth hormone. We examine the effec

A Case of Pediatric Breast Abscess Caused by Rarely Observed Bacteria in a Three-Year-Old Boy With an Inverted Nipple: Peptoniphilus harei, Actinotignum sanguinis, and Porphyromonas somerae.

Mastitis and breast abscesses are most common in lactating women but can also be observed in non-lactating women, adolescent girls, and neonates. However, breast abscesses are extremely rare in young boys. Herein, we report the case of a three-year-old boy with a swollen and painful right nipple, later diagnosed with a breast abscess. In this case, we suspected that the patient's inverted nipple was the possible site of the infection. To our best knowledge, this is the first case report of breast abscess in a young boy after the neonatal period. Although Staphylococcus aureus is the most commo

Single-dose oral azithromycin prophylaxis in planned vaginal delivery for sepsis prevention: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: The use of oral azithromycin (AZI) as a preventive measure against postpartum infections of planned vaginal births has garnered a lot of interest in recent years and has been the subject of many randomized controlled trials (RCTs). However, the results from these trials have not been consistent. Therefore, we aim to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine whether the use of a single-dose of oral AZI is clinically significant. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central for RCTs from May to June 2023, comparing a single dose of oral

A Sustainable Translational Sheep Model for Planned Cesarean Delivery of Contraction-Free Ewes.

We evaluated whether the sheep constitutes a useful translational model to evaluate anatomical and surgical aspects of cesarean delivery (CD) from a human medical perspective with the aim of both maternal and neonatal well-being. Our hypothesis was that CD in contraction-free ewes is not associated with major complications. Primary endpoint was the transferability of anatomical conditions and surgical techniques of CD from the ewe to the human. Secondary endpoints were maternal and fetal survival, occurrence of retained fetal membranes, metritis, mastitis, or wound infections. Forty-eight Meri

The effect of low-fidelity simulation training on breastfeeding knowledge, practice, and self-efficacy among young lactating mothers in Tanzania: A quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is of paramount importance for the survival, growth, and development of neonates. Lack of EBF puts mothers and their babies at high risk of many complications. Mothers may end up having breast engorgement, cracked nipple, mastitis, breast pain, and backache. Babies may acquire postnatal HIV transmission, reduce weight, stunting, poor cognitive and motor development, and increase the risk of diarrhea disease and respiratory infection. Breastfeeding training has been provided immediately after a women's birth. However, young mothers are still staggering

A Case of Bacteremia and Meningitis in a Neonate Infected with Group B Streptococcus via Breastfeeding Who Survived without Neurological Sequelae: A Case Report.

Invasive neonatal infection with Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a disease of concern that can lead to neurological sequelae. Guidelines for preventing mother-to-child transmission have been introduced to reduce the incidence of early-onset infection, but guidelines for controlling the late-onset form are lacking. Recently, the trans-breastfeeding route of transmission has been highlighted as an example of late-onset infection, but no consensus on how to manage such infections has been reached. In this report, we describe a case of late-onset bacteremia/meningitis in a neonate suspected to have

Colostrogenesis: Role and Mechanism of the Bovine Fc Receptor of the Neonate (FcRn).

Colostrogenesis is a separate and unique phase of mammary epithelial cell activity occurring in the weeks before parturition and rather abruptly ending after birth in the bovine. It has been the focus of research to define what controls this process and how it produces high concentrations of specific biologically active components important for the neonate. In this review we consider colostrum composition and focus upon components that appear in first milked colostrum in concentrations exceeding that in blood serum. The Fc Receptor of the Neonate (FcRn) is recognized as the major immunoglobuli
