Effects of formal aquatic activities on health and developmental outcomes in infants and toddlers younger than 36 months: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIMS: To systematically review and meta-analyze controlled evidence on the effects of formal aquatic activities on health and developmental outcomes in infants and toddlers younger than 36 months. BACKGROUND: Formal aquatic activities-including infant swimming, neonatal swimming, hydrotherapy, and warm-water bathing-are increasingly used in early-life care, yet existing studies vary in populations, intervention formats, and outcome measures, making overall effects difficult to determine. A structured synthesis is needed to clarify their potential role in early health and development. METHODS

Clinical Significance of the Identification of an Anti-M (IgG) Alloantibody in Pregnancy.

Anti-M is usually a naturally occurring, cold-reactive immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibody and is commonly regarded as clinically insignificant. An immunoglobulin G (IgG) component, however, can cross the placenta and has rarely been associated with hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN), including hyporegenerative fetal or neonatal anemia. A 42-year-old woman (G4P2A2) undergoing preconception evaluation had a positive indirect antiglobulin test (IAT) with initially inconclusive antibody identification. Reference immunohematology testing identified anti-M reactivity at 4°C. After dithio

Utilizing a chest CT interstitial lung disease scoring system for commonly encountered pediatric rheumatologic diseases with associated interstitial lung disease with clinical correlation.

BACKGROUND: Chest CT is useful for early detection and monitoring of rheumatologic-related interstitial lung disease (ILD) in children. However, interpretation is inconsistent and lacks standardization. OBJECTIVE: This study employs prior disease-specific CT scoring systems to systematically assess most rheumatologic diseases with ILD in pediatric patients and correlate scores with clinical findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included patients (ages 0-21 years) with rheumatologic-related ILD and chest CT. Two pediatric radiologists determined CT quality and separated pa

Gestational Age-Specific Agreement Between TcB Measured at the Sternum or Upper Back and Serum Bilirubin.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) measurement is widely used for noninvasive jaundice screening, but evidence regarding its correlation and agreement with serum bilirubin across gestational ages (GAs) remains limited, particularly in preterm newborns. At our institution, TcB screening is routinely performed at the sternum or upper back. This study evaluated the relationship between TcB measured at these sites and total serum bilirubin (TsB) across GAs. METHODS: This retrospective study included newborns born at 28-41 weeks' gestation and admitted to a tertiary pediatric referral cent

The PVL threat: A multicenter, single-cohort retrospective study of Panton-Valentine leukocidin staphylococcal infections in critically ill children.

UNLABELLED: Staphylococcus aureus carrying the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) genes, in both methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant (MRSA) strains, causes severe infection in previously healthy children. We described critically ill children with PVL-positive infection and explored predictors of prolonged intensive care. In this multicenter, single-cohort retrospective study, we included 44 consecutive children aged 0-16 years with PVL-producing S. aureus infection admitted to a neonatal or pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at 13 Italian centers between 2022 and 2025. Epidemiological assessment on birth outcomes among Marshallese migrants: a retrospective cohort study in the largest Marshallese community in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Marshallese migrants have experienced unique historical exposures related to nuclear testing, with potential implications for reproductive health. This study examined maternal and infant outcomes and birth defect prevalence among Marshallese individuals in Arkansas compared with Asian and other Pacific Islanders. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using Arkansas vital records and birth defects surveillance data (2001-2020) assessed prenatal care, birth outcomes and major congenital anomalies. Adjusted prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% CI were estimated using Poisson regression.

Hemolytic Jaundice and Anemia with Methemoglobinemia in Dizygotic Newborn Twins with Hb Evans: Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: It is highly unusual for a newborn infant to present in the first days after birth with cyanosis secondary to methemoglobinemia and with hemolytic anemia and jaundice. This combination suggests the possibility of an unstable hemoglobin variant. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe dizygotic twins, both with this presentation, where whole genome sequencing identified hemoglobin Evans (a point missense substitution in HBA2, the alpha2-globin gene) and found no other co-inherited variants known to be associated with neonatal methemoglobinemia, jaundice, or anemia. Herein we report on fou

Development of a machine learning-based predictive model for feeding intolerance risk in preterm infants: A prospective cohort study.

Feeding intolerance (FI) is a common complication in premature infants, often resulting in delayed achievement of full enteral feeding and prolonged hospitalization. This study aimed to construct an interpretable risk-prediction model for FI using machine-learning algorithms based on routine electronic medical-record data. We prospectively collected clinical data for 420 preterm infants admitted to a tertiary hospital between June 2023 and August 2024. Time zero was defined as birth, the intended prediction time point was admission to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and the prediction horizo

D-- phenotype and anti-Rh17 alloimmunization: a comprehensive review of identification and clinical management.

The D-- phenotype is an exceptionally rare Rh blood group phenotype characterized by expression of D in the complete absence of C, c, E, and e. Individuals with this phenotype are at risk of developing anti-Rh17 (anti-Hr0), a clinically significant alloantibody that can severely complicate transfusion support and pregnancy management because compatible blood is exceptionally difficult to obtain. This review critically synthesizes the available published evidence regarding the D-- phenotype and anti-Rh17 alloimmunization, integrating data from case reports, case series, family investigations, a

A novel frameshift RPL15 gene variant associated with hydrops fetalis and perinatal death.

BACKGROUND: The heterozygous RPL15 gene (OMIM*604174) variants are associated with autosomal dominant Diamond-Blackfan anemia 12 (DBA12, OMIM#615550). Fewer than ten RPL15 variants have been reported to date, and they are commonly associated with hydrops fetalis, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and neonatal anemia. Fetal demise attributable to the RPL15 variant identified in our patient was the first documented case of perinatal death associated with RPL15-related DBA. METHODS: Trio-based whole-exome sequencing (trio-WES) was performed on genomic DNA (gDNA) of fetal muscular tissues an

Oxidative Stress in Neonatal Disease: Established Organ Injury and Emerging Evidence for Skeletal Involvement.

Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species participate in physiological signaling and adaptation during fetal and neonatal development, whereas excessive, prolonged, or spatially dysregulated production may contribute to oxidative and nitrosative tissue injury. Redox dysregulation has been extensively investigated in neonatal conditions, including bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), congenital heart disease (CHD), and hyperbilirubinemia. Its relationship with bone metabolism is well established in adult
