INTRODUCTION: The mitigation measures to face the health emergency due to the COVID 19 pandemic generated a deep economic, social, and psychological crisis at the community level. This effect is greater in the people, who are the most violated in their rights. In relation to the social crisis and gender perspective, women are particularly affected by the pandemic. Given the disadvantaged situation of women socially, economically, and politically, their self-care is diminished.
OBJECTIVE: To identify whether there is an association between the classic risk factors for prematurity and fetal gro

Pre-eclampsia is associated with deficient intravascular production of prostacyclin, a vasodilator, and excessive production of thromboxane, a vasoconstrictor and stimulant of platelet aggregation. These observations led to the hypotheses that antiplatelet agents, low-dose aspirin in particular, might prevent or delay development of pre-eclampsia. This Cochrane review aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of antiplatelet agents, such as aspirin and dipyridamole, when given to women at risk of developing preeclampsia. A systematic review of literature was carried out by searching the fol

Late fetal growth restriction (FGR) poses its own challenges in respect of diagnosis, surveillance and delivery timing. Perinatal morbidity is relatively rare, and mortality extremely unusual, but given that late FGR is much more frequent than early FGR, the burden on neonatal services must not be underestimated. Doppler findings are more subtle than in early FGR, and growth rate rather than absolute fetal size may be important in defining the condition. Though umbilical artery Doppler changes form the basis for triggering delivery: reversed end diastolic flow at 32 weeks, absent at 34 weeks a

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems can persist following the treatment of depression and remission of symptoms. The extent to which having a previous history of depression may be associated with current daytime sleepiness is largely unknown.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the spring 2017 American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment (ACHA-NCHA) survey (92 institutions) which assessed self-reported health in U.S. college students (n = 41,670). Among the sample, 93.5% were 18-24 year of age, and 69.6% women. Logistic regression estimated the association between reported prior

BACKGROUND: Risk perception is based on collective indicators, but it is influenced by the individual's self-perception of his health-disease process. This study aims to investigate the risk perception of pregnant women who were identified as high-risk for premature birth and to seek strategies for better management of such cases.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study where women who had completed their participation in P5 trial were contacted and invited to answer a structured questionnaire with open questions. Data were collected by telephone and analyzed using thematic analysis. The ana

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have reported decreases in the preterm delivery incidence during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the findings are inconsistent. Given the wide disparities in the pandemic's impact across communities, neighborhood deprivation may explain the observed variation in the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and preterm delivery.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the changes in the incidence of preterm delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic with attention to the effect modification introduced by neighborhood hardship.
STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study included a

The phenotypic variability associated with pathogenic variants in Lysine Acetyltransferase 6B (KAT6B, a.k.a. MORF, MYST4) results in several interrelated syndromes including Say-Barber-Biesecker-Young-Simpson Syndrome and Genitopatellar Syndrome. Here we present 20 new cases representing 10 novel KAT6B variants. These patients exhibit a range of clinical phenotypes including intellectual disability, mobility and language difficulties, craniofacial dysmorphology, and skeletal anomalies. Given the range of features previously described for KAT6B-related syndromes, we have identified additional p

INTRO: Transposition of the great arteries (TGA) is a rare cyanotic congenital heart defect (CHD) typically presenting the first month of life. Late presentations may occur in patients with associated cardiac anomalies allowing for mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, such as ventral septal defects or large atrial septal defects (ASD). We present a case of a late-presenting TGA with no ventral septal defect, and only small ASD and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA).
CASE: A 2-month-old female infant presented to a rural emergency department with respiratory distress for 1 day. On arrival,

BACKGROUND: Population-based household surveys, notably the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS), remain the main source of maternal and newborn health data for many low- and middle-income countries. As part of the Every Newborn Birth Indicators Research Tracking in Hospitals (EN-BIRTH) study, this paper focuses on testing validity of measurement of maternal and newborn indicators around the time of birth (intrapartum and postnatal) in survey-report.
METHODS: EN-BIRTH was an observational study testing the validity of measurement for selected mate

OBJECTIVE: Clinical trials evaluating pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment of COVID-19, either excluded pregnant women or included very few women. Unlike the numerous systematic reviews on prevalence, symptoms and adverse outcomes of COVID-19 in pregnancy, there are very few on the effects of treatment on maternal and neonatal outcomes in pregnancy. We undertook a systematic review of all published and unpublished studies on the effects of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for COVID-19 on maternal and neonatal pregnancy outcomes.

A fetus with features of hydrops was given intra-uterine transfusion at 27 weeks and 31 weeks of gestation. Mother had been alloimmunized with anti-D and anti-C antibodies. At birth, laboratory investigations revealed bone marrow suppression along with features of hemolytic anemia. The neonate was started on a combination of phototherapy and intravenous immunoglobulin. During the course, the neonate was transfused with one unit of packed red cells (top-up transfusion). Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia responded to phototherapy and the bone marrow activity spontaneously resumed after 3 weeks of life

The risk stratification of young adults between subjects who will develop a mild form COVID-19 and subjects who will undergo a severe disease remains inaccurate. In this review, we propose that the Barker hypothesis might explain the increased susceptibility to severe forms of COVID-19 in subjects who underwent intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). In this paper evidence indicating an association between a low birth weight and an adult phenotype which might favor a severe outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infection are presented: lower lung functional capacity; increased respiratory morbidity; changes i

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic is an ongoing global health threat, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Questions remain about how SARS-CoV-2 impacts pregnant individuals and their children.
OBJECTIVE: To expand our understanding of the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy on pregnancy outcomes, regardless of symptomatology, by using serological tests to measure IgG antibody levels.
METHODS: The Generation C Study is an ongoing prospective cohort study conducted at the Mount Sinai Health System. All pregnant individuals receiving obstetri

IMPORTANCE: Women undergoing cerclage placement remain at high risk for preterm labor and preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROMs). The management of cervical cerclage after PPROM is controversial given the potential for prolonged latency when the cerclage is kept in place balanced with a potential increased risk of maternal infectious morbidity.
OBJECTIVE: In this review, we compared studies that examined maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes in women with cerclage at the time of PPROM. We evaluated latency after PPROM and maternal and neonatal complications in the setting of PPROM wi

BACKGROUND: Significant inequalities still exist between low- and high-income countries regarding access to optimum emergency obstetric care including life-saving emergency caesarean section. These relationships are considerably stronger between population-based caesarean section rates and socio-economic characteristics with poorest households experiencing significant unmet needs persistently.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the characteristics of women receiving emergency C-section using a new, validated definition in Ghana and the Dominican Republic.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional

The risk stratification of young adults between subjects who will develop a mild form of atherosclerosis and subjects who will undergo a severe disease remains inaccurate. In the eighties of the previous century, David JP Barker has demonstrated the relationship between fetal conditions and occurrence of pathologies in adulthood. In this paper, the multiple evidence that might explain the increased susceptibility to severe forms of atherosclerosis, including stroke and cardiac infarct, in subjects who underwent intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) will be analyzed. Specifically, we will revi

BACKGROUND: Registry data from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) show an increase of 40% in IUI and 377% in IVF cases using donor sperm between 2006 and 2016.
OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE: The objective of this study was to establish whether pregnancies conceived using donor sperm are at higher risk of obstetric and perinatal complications than those conceived with partner sperm. As more treatments are being carried out using donor sperm, attention is being given to obstetric and perinatal outcomes, as events in utero and at delivery have implications for long-term health. Th

BACKGROUND: Women with disabilities are at an increased risk for adverse birth outcomes; however, research among women with congenital neuromuscular disabilities (cNMD) is limited.
OBJECTIVE: To describe characteristics and compare birth outcomes among women with and without cNMD.
METHODS: Data were from the Slone Birth Defects Study (case-control, conducted from 1976 to 2015), which collected information on demographic, reproductive, and lifestyle characteristics. cNMD included spina bifida, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, contractures, or arthrogryposis and were identified by participa

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women who have substance use disorders (SUDs) are at increased risk of preterm birth, fetal mortality, and inadequate prenatal care and have higher rates of childhood trauma than their counterparts without SUDs. Doulas have been utilized with other vulnerable populations who experience trauma to increase perinatal healthcare utilization, provide emotional support, and improve birth outcomes. The objective of the current study was to examine, in women with opioid use disorder (OUD), perceptions of working with a doula in the perinatal period.
METHODS: Eligible participants
