Nineteen "female" Holstein-Friesian calves born co-twin with a bull were purchased shortly after birth. One subsequently was judged to be a normal female with 0% XY (100% XX) karyotypes in cultures of blood lymphocytes. However, one typical freemartin also had 0% XY (100% XX) Karyotypes in 300 cells when examined at three ages. Growth properties of cells cultured from primary mammary tumors of C3H mice have been analyzed. Enzyme replacement therapy was studied in a chimeric mannosidosis calf which had received a natural transplacental transplant of normal lymphocytes from its co-twin. There was considerable reduction in the pathology of certain organs and in the amount of storage oligosaccharides, but the clinical course of this neurologic disease was not significantly altered. It was postulated that if this disease had been purely visceral the transplant would have been relatively effective.

Midtrimester abortion was successfully induced in 35 patients by serial intramuscular injections of 15(S)-15-methyl-prostaglandin F2alpha. The dose schedule in this series was an initial injection of 250 mug of 15-ME-PGF2alpha followed by another 250 mug in 2 hours, then 500 mug every 2 hours up to 24 hours; in patients who did not abort within 24 hours the dose was raised to 750 mug every 2 hours until abortion. A study of 20 patients with hemoglobin E trait abnormality and 8 patients with hemoglobin E disease in pregnancy is presented. The hematologic abnormality in HbE hemoglobinopathy is mild though hemoglobin values are significantly lower than in HbA patients. A small sample of fetal blood suitable for studies of haemoglobin synthesis was obtained from a placental vessel under endoscopic visualisation in 23 of 26 patients in whom the procedure was attempted prior to second-trimester abortion. Fetal blood loss, calculated in 23 cases, was between 0-2 ml. and 2-5 ml., and fetal blood-volume depletion varied from 0-5% to 15%. No short-term ill-effects were demonstrated in mother or fetus in any of 16 patients in whom the injection of aborti-facient was postponed for between 16 and 24 hours after the procedure.

Effects of diazoxide on systemic and uterine hemodynamics as well as on fetal circulation and blood respiratory gases were investigated in chronically instrumented pregnant sheep. Ten pregnant Welsh pony mares were each treated with a series of three intravenous injections of 2000 iu human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) on alternate days. In four mares the first dose was given before the 39th day of gestation and conceptual loss followed treatments in all mares. The other six mares were first treated between the 40th and 97th days. No conceptual loss occurred despite five of the mares being given a fourth dose of HCG. Two mares first treated on days 36 and 38 of pregnancy subsequently produced PMSG although foetal death had occurred.

Placentas and fetuses from cases of induced midtrimester abortion and fetal loss (13 weeks of pregnancy or more) were examined microbiologically. In the series of midtrimester fetal loss, bacteria were isolated in 14 per cent and genital Mycoplasma in 37 per cent of the placentas.
