Singleton freemartinism in cattle: A structured narrative review and historical case reappraisal.

Freemartinism classically affects a female calf gestated with a male co-twin. A female may be born as an apparent singleton when a male co-conceptus is lost after placental vascular communication has permitted cellular exchange and exposure to testicular products. This structured narrative review and historical case reappraisal evaluates evidence for singleton freemartinism, clarifies diagnostic boundaries and reassesses a 1995 case following multiple-embryo transfer. PubMed, Scopus and FAO AGRIS were searched through 14 September 2026, supplemented by citation searching. Evidence supports the

Female-specific hypertension risk factors across the lifecourse: a co-twin control analysis using the California Twin Program.

Twin studies have been underutilized for examining female-specific etiology of hypertension (HT). The discordant co-twin design offers unique strengths not afforded by other approaches primarily because relatedness and shared origins naturally match twin pairs more closely on genetic and early environmental confounders. We aimed to confirm HT-associated factors across the lifecourse among 202 female twin pairs identified from the California Twin Program (CTP) registry. A baseline questionnaire queried current and past risk factors and self-reported prevalent HT. Hypertension-discordant pairs w

Rheology of Twin Anemia-Polycythemia Sequence: Insights from Hemoglobin Electrophoresis - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Twin anemia-polycythemia sequence (TAPS) is a recognized complication of monochorionic (MC) twins due to abnormal placental vasculature. Determining the rheology involved within the abnormal placental vasculature may help in identifying the optimum treatment option. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of TAPS which was treated via intrauterine transfusions (IUTs) with partial exchange transfusions in which additional hemoglobin electrophoresis (HbEp) testing was performed on cordocentesis samples taken before and after IUTs and partial exchange transfusions for the donor and r

Prenatal genetic diagnosis and pregnancy outcomes of the surviving co-twin after spontaneous single intrauterine fetal demise.

Spontaneous single intrauterine fetal demise (SSIUFD) in twin pregnancies is a special condition of stillbirth. When SSIUFD occurs, clinical attention understandably shifts to the surviving co‑twin. This study aimed to investigate the genetic profiles and perinatal outcomes of surviving co-twins following SSIUFD. This retrospective study reviewed 88 twin pregnancies complicated by spontaneous SSIUFD that underwent invasive prenatal testing between January 2015 and December 2024. Cases of elective fetal reduction and those with unknown chorionicity were not included. The cohort included 54 dich

Preparing for Shotgun Sequencing in Forensic Genetics-A Workflow for Analysis of Monozygotic Twins.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Identifying the true perpetrator among monozygotic (MZ) twins has long posed a challenge in forensic genetics and for police investigations because MZ twins are likely identical in their short tandem repeat (STR) profile. In this study, we propose a workflow to address this issue, anchored in a case study involving MZ twins. METHODS: The workflow includes shotgun sequencing of reference samples from one twin and trace samples, followed by a targeted amplicon-based approach (AmpliSeq™ Custom Panel) to validate the identified variants. RESULTS: Biological traces from the

Partial molar pregnancy with a viable co-twin complicated by placenta accreta spectrum: case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Twin pregnancies complicated by hydatidiform mole with a coexisting fetus (HMCF) and placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) are exceptionally rare and clinically challenging. Partial HMCF is particularly uncommon, with both conditions posing risks of hemorrhage, preeclampsia, and progression to gestational trophoblastic neoplasia. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old gravida 4, para 3 woman with a history of three prior cesarean sections presented at 24 + 3 weeks with vaginal bleeding, headache, and blurred vision. Ultrasound revealed a dichorionic twin pregnancy: one partia

Natural Observation of Abortion of Heterotopic Cesarean Scar Pregnancy: A Case Report With Literature Review.

Heterotopic cesarean scar pregnancy (HCSP) is a rare condition in which an intrauterine pregnancy coexists with an ectopic pregnancy implanted in a cesarean scar. Due to its rarity, no standardized management has been established. Here, we report a 38-year-old Japanese woman diagnosed with HCSP, who experienced massive bleeding associated with spontaneous abortion (SA) of the cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) at 8 weeks of gestation. The coexisting intrauterine pregnancy remained viable. As she desired pregnancy continuation, she was managed expectantly. At 335/7 weeks, she developed massive bleed

Complete hydatidiform mole with a co-existing normal fetus at mid-trimester in a dichorionic diamniotic gestation.

We report a spontaneously conceived dichorionic diamniotic twin pregnancy in which a complete hydatidiform mole co-existed with a structurally normal fetus. An early ultrasound scan demonstrated a viable fetus with an adjacent cystic area initially interpreted as subchorionic haemorrhage. A definitive diagnosis was established at 21 weeks' gestation when repeat ultrasound scan revealed a separate sac containing diffuse vesicular placental tissue consistent with a complete molar co-twin.Although serum β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) was elevated (236,580 mIU/mL), this value falls within

Survival following twin-to-twin exsanguination in monoamniotic twins: management with peritoneal dialysis.

Monochorionic monoamniotic twin pregnancies carry substantial perinatal risk, with co-twin demise potentially causing acute twin-to-twin exsanguination in the survivor. Resultant profound anaemia and cardiovascular compromise may lead to severe acute kidney injury (AKI), while peritoneal dialysis (PD) in premature neonates remains technically challenging because of low birth weight and limited access options. We report a female infant born at 31+6 weeks' gestation following intrauterine co-twin demise from cord entanglement. She developed profound anaemia, metabolic acidosis and anuric stage 3

Intrauterine transfusion in monochorionic twins with parvovirus B19 infection: Evidence of intertwin blood exchange.

BACKGROUND: Parvovirus B19 infection can cause severe fetal anemia. Management in monochorionic twin pregnancies is challenging due to placental vascular connections. CASE: We report a case of severe fetal anemia in both fetuses of a monochorionic diamniotic twin pregnancy following maternal parvovirus B19 infection. Elevated middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity (MCA-PSV) was first detected at 16 weeks in twin A and reached 2.32 multiples of the median (MoM) in twin A and 2.30 MoM in twin B at 21+6 weeks. These findings were associated with polyhydramnios in both fetuses and ascites

Tattooing is Mainly Cultural: A Representative Twin Study of Tattooing Determinants.

Tattooing has become increasingly common in recent decades, yet little is known regarding factors that influence tattoo behavior. Sources of influence will be important, for instance in aiding studies of long-term health effects. From the population-based Danish Twin Tattoo Cohort established in 2021, the study included 9,173 randomly selected twins born 1920-2004. Among these were 4,790 (52%) responders to a questionnaire on tattooing and lifestyle factors. There were 55% females, 22% were monozygotic twins, and the median age was 51 years. Shared influence of tattooing over time was assessed

Protein epigenetic scores and overall mortality in the longitudinal Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging (SATSA).

INTRODUCTION: DNA methylation (DNAm) has a functional role in gene regulation, and it has been used to estimate various human characteristics. Variation in DNAm is associated with aging and variability of the proteome. Therefore, understanding the relationship between blood circulating proteins, aging, and mortality is critical to identify disease-causing pathways. We aimed to estimate the association between protein epigenetic scores (EpiScores) and overall mortality in the Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging (SATSA). METHODS: We included information from 374 individuals collected between 1

Adverse late outcomes in long-term survivors of young adult Hodgkin lymphoma (YAHL) compared to their unaffected co-twins.

Late-onset conditions have been reported in young adult Hodgkin lymphoma (YAHL) survivors but the use of convenience controls may bias estimates. Thirty-five YAHL survivors and their unaffected co-twins completed an online questionnaire on such conditions. McNemar's test and conditional logistic and random-effects linear regression were used to assess differences. On average, YAHL survivors (54.3% monozygotic, 57.1% female) were 27.1 years at diagnosis and 29.7 years post-diagnosis at participation. Survivors had increased risk of secondary malignancy (OR = 4.33), cardiac (12 cases/0 co-twins)

Clonal dynamics of monozygotic twinning in early human embryogenesis.

Monozygotic twins are derived from the split of a single zygote early in embryogenesis. Although it was hypothesized that the timing of twining is overall associated with fetal membrane configuration of twins, i.e., chorionicity and amnionicity, our understanding of early embryonic clonal dynamics underlying human twinning is limited. Here we explored the segregations of early embryonic lineages in 7 dichorionic diamniotic (DCDA), 7 monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA), 8 monochorionic monoamniotic (MCMA) monozygotic twins, and 1 dichorionic triamniotic (DCTA) monozygotic triplets, using post-zygot

Twin Pregnancy With Discordant Pathology: A Case of Molar Gestation and Viable Co-twin After Assisted Conception.

Complete hydatidiform mole with a coexisting viable twin is an exceptionally rare condition. It poses significant maternal risks, including hemorrhage, early-onset preeclampsia, and progression to gestational trophoblastic neoplasia. The use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) has increased the detection of such complex gestations, yet optimal management remains controversial. We present the case of a 23-year-old primigravida who conceived a dichorionic diamniotic twin pregnancy following frozen embryo transfer. Early ultrasound demonstrated one normally developing gestational sac with a

What is the role of intrauterine transfusion after single intrauterine death in monochorionic twin pregnancies? Evidence from a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of intrauterine transfusion (IUT) in affecting the outcome of the surviving twin showing sign of fetal anemia after a single intrauterine fetal death (IUFD) in monochorionic (MC) twin pregnancies. METHODS: PubMed, Medline and Embase databases were searched (2010-2024). The inclusion criteria were studies reporting the outcome of fetuses showing signs of fetal anemia, defined as the presence of the peak systolic velocity (PSV) of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) >1.5 MoM, after single IUFD receiving compared to those not receiving IUT.
